Did Carolina Marry A Stripper?

August 19, 2010:  It was like .... that doggie in the window. The one with the waggely tail.  As soon as I heard the phrase “like marrying a stripper” I knew I would adopt it.  I heard it from ESPN radio-talker Colin Cowherd.  I’m not sure how Cowherd uses it, but I know how I will use it.

If a regular guy “marries a stripper”, his buddies and his buddies’ buddies will all be talking about it.  Like Jack / Jackee the cross-dresser at Blondie’s reunion, “the guy that marries a stripper” and "the stripper" are gonna be topics of conversation. LOTS of conversation.

To his face the comments will range from “Dude, you rock” to “You dawg” to “Excuse me, its none of my business but I gots to know .....”.   Behind his back, at the barber shop and over the back fence the chatter will be different ..... “what was he thinking, SHE’S A STRIPPER!” ..... “date one maybe but who actually marries one” .... “he’s the last guy I’d ever think would marry a stripper”.

NOTE:
This column has been up for a week and received national attention, but for whatever reason is just NOW (Tues 8/24) attracting the really hard-core crazies.  Musta got linked on one of the bottom-feeder fan sites.  Oh well ....

Have you compiled a list of friends in descending order likely to “marry a stripper”?  Will you now?  You’re thinking about it, aren’t you?  Yee haa, I love playing with ya’ll’s minds.

Words matter.  It could be “marry a hooker” or “a ho” but “marry a stripper” is a little bit funnier.  At least I think so.

Doggies with waggely tails and marrying a stripper will find a perfect analogous home.  The ongoing unpleasantry over in Chapel Hill came along for a reason.  Four years ago Carolina married a stripper - named Butch

There was the “Dude, you ROCK!” congrats and the murmured “Doesn’t he know?  Should we tell him?”  “No, besides, maybe the stripper is not doing IT any more.”  Yeah, right.

Is getting buck nekkid to titillate a roomful of losers with cheap haircuts and a sizable number of local elected officials analogous to flimflamming overly aggressive young men with a penchant for inflicting legalized mayhem and way below-average reading comprehension?

Is being the headliner at a nudie bar out on the bypass really similar to being the long awaited

...a masturbatory fantasy for the audience and a pile of empty liquor bottles.

messiah who will lead us to BCS glory?
In either case it's just a masturbatory fantasy for the audience and a pile of empty liquor bottles for someone to clean up....

Time passed.  The odd couple settled down, bought a nice starter-home and opened a 401-K at the local credit union.  “Stripper-wife” did everything she could to fit in to the neighborhood.  Put away the Daisy Dukes and the Candies and the French t-shirts.  In their place she wore jeans a size too big, over-sized tees, and espadrilles. She used minimal make-up never teasing her hair, pulling it into a ponytail with a rubber band most days.

At neighborhood get-togethers she avoided direct eye contact with anyone’s husband lest she be accused of “flirting”.  She boned-up on TMZ so she could have inane chit chat with the other wives.  She learned to make two kinds of casseroles and even took a course in organic gardening at the community college.  She drove a Kia crossover and told her manicurist definitely no French tips.  She really tried.   After four years it seemed to be working out.

She was shopping at Trader Joe’s at Eastgate lingering over a choice of imitation coffee flavorings – Amaretto, Hazelnut or, a seasonal special, Pumpkin Spice.

Ms Wuff and "that jersey girl with the blue dress on” from a block over were chatting by the deli counter.  They had always been a bit standoffish. They hadn’t noticed her.

“.... and when she was in Miami, she entertained A-rabs and Colombian drug lords.”

“Did they run her out of Cleveland for doing kiddie porn?”

“I hear she was the original “Debbie” in Debbie Does Dallas and did NOT use a body double ....”

It hit her like a blitzing linebacker from the blind side.  The baggy jeans and tuna casseroles had not mattered.   She was “the stripper”.  She would always be “the stripper”.  A marine with / without a jarhead haircut is always a Marine.  With / without stilettos and a brass pole – a stripper is always a stripper.

Vice cops from Indianapolis would always be snopping around the neighborhood asking questions.

She drove the Kia back to the tidy suburban ranch on the quiet cul-de-sac.   She knew what she had to do.   Her husband – Tar Heel – had been wonderful to her.  He bought her anything she wanted.  He bought her a black lab they named "Blake”.  "Blake" could go fetch really well.  There were gifts for no reason - a $250,000 check on their first anniversary.  He was building an elaborate addition to their house amid the towering pines!  He didn’t care what anyone else thought – he loved his stripper.  She loved him in her own way.

But she had never deleted the old playlist from her i-tunes - those songs with the pulsating beat.  Her entrance music.  Her old agent/pimp Jimma would leave voice mails.  Some afternoons, she would draw the drapes and get out the naughty school marm outfit or the Nurse Goodbody uniform.  Tar Heel never asked her to get rid of them.  She never said she had.  Both knew it was best not to say anything.  She really tried.

The casseroles, the gerbera daisys, the sensible shoes were fine and perfect for most people, but a stripper isn’t most people.

Tar Heel saw the note on the breakfast table as soon as he walked in.  He didn't have to read it to know what it said?  Tar Heel knew.  Work was going well but he knew the suits at the home office referred to him as that nice guy that married a freakin’ stripper.   Nice guys who marry strippers get known but never get the big promotion.  How would the memo read – We are pleased to announce our new VP for Strategic Marketing is that guy who married the stripper.

Dear Tar Heel
We gave it our best shot.  We tried our very best.  Four years or fourteen years, I’ll still be “the stripper” and you’ll still be “that nice guy who married a stripper”.  Call that nice coach from Vanderbilt or Ty Willingham or even Bill Cowher (!).  You deserve to be happy.  You really are a sleeping giant you know.

I’m taking Blake with me.  Jimma has booked me into a nice club in the SEC.  Please don’t try and follow me.

Love,
Butch The Stripper

PS:  Yes, I did clean out our bank account.  Hey Gomer, you married a freakin' stripper, you dolt !

There is nothing wrong with "marrying a stripper" so long as you don't try to pass her off as a virgin princess.

Comments anyone? Lotta comments on this one.  Figured there might be...

There is only one way to pay for the women’s volleyball team (or women’s: squash, bad mitten, softball, crew et al) and that is to win at football. I too, wish Butch would be more Tar Heel like, but I still contend we’re lucky to have him. It is certainly better (in my opinion) than the mediocre incompetence we dealt with..... And oh, by the way, Mack was a stripper too. He just was better at kissing babies. For that matter, any successful coach at this level does it for an ego stroke and the paycheck. That includes your boy Roy2rings.

You have been in too many tattoed stripper joints. We got ourselves a "Chettah" girl. One you can take home to momma.

As for the dumb sap who married a stripper, what's to say? Maybe we all should read more Ben Franklin quotes: --"Experience is a dear teacher, but fools will learn at no other." --"Wise men don't need advice. Fools won't take it." --"If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins." --"He that displays too often his wife and his wallet is in danger of having both of them borrowed." --"Life's Tragedy is that we get old too soon AND WISE TOO LATE." We all either show true wisdom and learn from others' mistakes... or we don't. My experience has been that most people fall into the latter category, the "don'ts." I call 'em "ignorANUSes."

At one time Patti was 'the singin' rage'. Re Butch...you know more than I do, but maybe the old Butch and the new Butch ain't the same Butch. Cancer survivors over 50 have a tendency to undergo epiphanies.

Seems a bit harsh to me. How much did Carl Snavely, Jim Tatum, Jim Hickey, Bill Dooley, Dick Crum, Mac Brown, Carl Torbush, or even “I bleed Carolina Blue even if I have not been back to Chapel Hill since I graduated” John Bunting really care about Hinton James anyway? Coaching football is a job. ......The coaches who win get paid the best, just like the executive who produces the biggest profits, or the salesman who makes the most sales. Get over it.

BL: This one is going to all worthwhile friends around the world. Geez, pure genius...... I sent it to three great guys who spent their lives in sports and then in "the business" of college sports. One, a huge winner and great man had this to say (he is one of those profane guys who will be in heaven), "So, sounds to me as though 'Cheaphaircut' spends much of his life yearning for 'slippery seconds' while cheating old people out of their homes and life savings." Your are known by your heroes.....

Here's the deal. I don't go around blaming head coaches for every little issue that's questionable, as they don't always know what's going on with others (both players or staff). What I do have a problem with is; when you hire someone that has a questionable background, as this assistant and his ongoing relationship with this agent does, then it is your responsibility to keep an eye out on their activities. ...... Butch does bear that responsibility because he hired him. Knowing Butch, himself, came from Miami should have been a red flag for Mr. Baddour. I don't think Butch cares to be a part of UNC. It's just a stopping off point for him until he goes to something bigger and better. He failed in the pros and needed something for the time being. That's how I see him, and I hope I am wrong.

Bob Lee, I hope and pray you never have to write about a coach at NCSU the way you have had to about Butch. I know it hurts and I know you hurt for the Heels. Charlie Craven is saying Franklin Street is in good hands because BobLee is there to keep it clean! Have a Blessed Day, Harry

I've enjoyed comparing Dave Glenn's comments about the actual investigation at UNC to the things that he said about Amato. In one case he says that we shouldn't jump to conclusions...and in the other situation, HE was the one jumping to conclusions. It should be obvious to all of the regular BobLee readers why this State fan reads one and not the other.
8/20/2010 3:17:05 PM

David Glenn does have his loyal fans. We used to be friends until he admitted to me that "details are irrelevant" to him. That was a year ago. We exchanged obscenities and haven't spoken since. :>)

Flair: Assuming we pretty much know the current story w/ Blake, Gary The Agent and Marvin et al ... and there is not some gianormus camel about to stick its nose under the tent. .... I'd say "very likely" that Butch IS back..... I'd say zero chance of Blake being back. If the NCAA findings have Blake in any level of malfeasance AT ALL, he'll go away IMMED under some form of "just go away" settlement.... If Butch chooses to back Blake, that will get "sticky".

Just Wonderin'
Isn't the real problem at Carolina Baddour? You know there was another applicant for the job, when Swofford left, a guy who knew football and is now a real go getter and is now a top dog in another Carolina area. So, in your opinion, is Baddour the problem? Just Wonderin'

Dear Just: "Prince Tassel Loafer" got ZERO credit when Butch was hired. There were "Fat Cats" involved. Ergo he can't be blamed if hiring Butch had some nasty fishhooks in it. .... BL

I have long opined that the reasonable expected standard for Tar Heel football is somewhere in the range of 8-10 wins per year with an ACC championship every 20 years. It simply doesn't matter whether your premise is correct - stripper or not, UNC is not and never will be an elite football program. Great new format. I trust you will police it accordingly and limit the contributions of deranged fruitcakes. Let me add to what the prior commenters have written by pointing out that your wit is exceeded only by your brevity.

Not sure I understand this article. Butch Davis a "sexy hire"????- you need to get out more. If this was about Alabama and Nick Saban it would be funny; just don't think it applies to a guy credited with rebuilding the "U" while cleaning it up. What am I missing?

WoadBlue
You miss the point made by Nole91: Butch was hired to clean up Miami. He greatly increased graduation rates, and ended the soap opera of endless off the field legal problems and on the field antics of awful sportsmanship. The only reason the ACC could ever look at adding Miami is that Butch succeeded in cleaning up a rogue program. If Butch were Dennis Erickson or Barry Switzer, this article would make sense.
8/24/2010 9:37:30 PM
BobLee
No WoadBlue, I understood Nole's point and I know of all the stuff you say in support of Butch. .... There are other sides to Butch's Miami days. .... I'm not going to get into those other sides because it serves no useful purpose. ..... It is human nature that partisan fans believe what they wish to believe - the good about "their guy" and the bad about "their guy". ..... I would never take a stand as I have w/ this situation without going MUCH deeper than the superficial public story.
8/24/2010 9:49:44 PM
rifleman
What am I missing? In my humble opinion you could substitute "Butch Davis" with about 25 other current coaches/universities. Is it due to the NCAA investigation? If so again you substitute 25 "other" names whether their currently on probation, being investigated, or are breaking rules NCAA knowingly or unknowing. Does anyone really know or fully understand "all" of the NCAA rules? You seem to just write this with some obvious personal axe to grind with UNC and Butch Davis; which is your choice as the writer. FYI- I am not a Carolina fan
8/24/2010 10:23:05 PM
BobLee
You are EXACTLY RIGHT, rifleman. There are probably 25 situations on-going that are similar to UNC's or more so. And that is the point. ..... Such investigations are commonplace at Georgia, Tenn, Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Michigan, SoCal, et al .... and forever my fellow UNC fans have looked down their elite noses in contempt of such scallywag programs. Now they have BECOME ONE. ...... Absolutely nothing wrong with "marrying a stripper" so long as you don't try to pass your stripper off as a virgin princess. .... thanks for your comment. BL
8/24/2010 10:47:16 PM
WoadBlue
If the things I note about Butch's days in Miami are true, and they are, then casting Butch as a stripper is plain wrong. Casting him as a bride who might have been easy while in college could make sense, if he had the dirty dealings at Miami that you suggest he did. But in no way does stripper with a pimp fit. Strippers do not significantly improve class attendance and graduation rates, do not end the revolving door before arraignment judges, and do not end displays of the worst sportsmanship.

Woad: I think you should start your own website in support of Butch. Let me guess .... you know some "FACTS" about Coach K and Chuck Amato and Steve Spurrier too but I bet those "Facts per Woad" are not so praiseworthy. :>) ..... I can recommend a good webmaster if you want to get in this business.

YIKES carrboro loon .... half a century, huh? That would include Bill Dooley, Dick Crum's early years and Mack Brown's last six years. I'd say your definition of "bad football" is pretty strict. LOTS of bowl games and AllAmers honored in Kenan Stadium from all that "bad football". ?????

Bravo to both Carr-loon and IH8Dook for being true to their priorities. I do question how anyone can logically say UNC has had 50 years of "bad football" when one looks at the tenures of Dooley, Crum and Brown. ????? The Torbush/Bunting eras where frustrating (but 3 bowls game in 9 years is hardly "bad") and Carl/John pretty much OWNED NCState. Yes, the NCSU that Butch is 0-3 against. .... ............ BUT, the stigma remains with the BCS OR BUST BUNCH so be it..... Fan Partisanship is "opinions without consequence" where WE win games and coaches LOSE games. That is "coaches AND Dickie lose'em of course - in the litter box minds of the Looney Fringe. Bless their dark lil' hearts. :>)

Great article BobLee! (As always.) Spot-on and funny without fail. I noticed some of the comments above with regard to improving graduation rates, etc. In light of the last 24 hours or so worth of stories regarding the tutor/nanny and an awful lot of "ghost writing", it's not surprising graduation rates have improved. Keep'em coming BobLee!

Creative humor, sex, and truth all in one column! Fine work, BobLee. As a long-time UVa fan and ABCer, I see the same unrealistic, smug, would-be-elitism among much of the UVa world that can characterize the otherwise fine institution of UNC. Keep telling it like it is, and, as for detractors, we'll just keep in mind my favorite Armenian aphorism: Let him who loves truth keep one foot in the stirrup.

Thanks Doc: The smug faux-elite among the UNC/UVa "types" are all whistling past their own graveyard as we endure our internal gastric disorder. .... we have long feasted on SEC fans, looking down our upturned noses .... noses well-bloodied now. ..... even our bottom-feeder faction is silent (thankfully!).

Entertaining article to say the least, BobLee. Even though I feel that it is a bit premature considering the infractions haven't been officially reported, I do feel like I have been punched in my self righteous nose. I feel like the guy who unknowingly married a stripper, and then found out about it by coming home early from work one day only to find her giving my neighbor a lap dance in my living room. I'm guessing you know which neighbor I am referring to. He's the obnoxious one down the street who never shuts up about the good old days back in '83. Now he gets to hold this over my head forever. I would divorce her, but without the knowledge of her stripper background, I never had her sign a prenuptial agreement. Keep up the good work.

You know Bob Lee, we kind of had an inkling that there was a sea change happening in Blue Heaven after the Stripper signed on. There was the indignant outcries of Clemson fans when the Heels admitted 2 players that Clemson had rejected. That was followed by the player turned down by EZU (yes, I'm serious) being allowed to suit up for Baby Blue. We began to suspect that the Stripper had been given a lot more rope than Bunting, et als.
8/28/2010 5:39:24 PM

Certainly John Blake has been competing somewhat successfully for three years with the very programs our fans have long disdained for the academic shortcomings of their players. Those players are now our players..... Over the years we have had "some" marginal "student (wink!) athletes". Now we have more than "some" and apparently they are not being held to even marginal standards.... I'll discuss this issue further in future columns.

Butch Davis is an articulate and quality human being. He did a superb job at Miami and they would have loved to have him back. In fact, they offered the job to him before giving it to Shannon. He turned them down to take the job at UNC. I believe his only mistake was hiring his friend Blake who betrayed his trust. I hope he survives because if he does, UNC will be a major force for years to come. After all, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
9/1/2010 6:03:42 PM

Thanks for your comments gm. I agree that Butch is an articulate and fine person. There are a wide spectrum of stories about his tenure at Miami, the circumstances of his leaving and his legacy there. One can pick any point on that spectrum and divine an opinion from it. ...... Butch has done what he said he would do when he was hired - exactly what he would have done at Arkansas and any other established FB school. ..... UNC made assumptions about how he would do that. My upcoming column on Butch / Jimmy V will explain that further.
