Some Guy from WHERE named WHAT ???

BobLeeSays: Dec 1, ’12
Frau Yow went ahunting up in DeKalb, Illinois and bagged herself a Dave Dornan.... Dan Dorane.... Doug Doherty.... Dick Dohicky....  It’s Dave Doeren.  And he’s from Western Iowa.... Middle Indiana..... Central Southern Ohio – It’s Northern Illinois...... A good solid choice with plenty of upside to please real adult Wuffs.... and enough question marks to provide yadda yadda fodder for non-Wuffs.

Ruggedly good-looking, high energy young guy (41) with fine football pedigree and strong, albeit short HC resume.  Remarkably similar career profile as Larry Fedora. Both fan bases will swear they got the better one.  ..... Flip the two men and both fan bases would still swear they got the better one.

..... Remember that little tidbit over the next few years.

His name is unusual so the over/under on how often it (Doeren) will be misspelled is - "at least 83% of the time for the first year".  50% of the time thereafter."

For sure Dan / Don / Doug was - “Frau’s first choice from Day One”.  ..... hehhehhe.  The meets with all the others were just to throw off the throng of international media who form Frau’s press corps. (?) Only five NC State fans had ever heard of Dan / Don / Dave nine days ago..... Now he's THE SAVIOR! Yeeee Ha!

My first question would be - Why didn't Purdue grab this guy ?? ..... regional recruiting ties and Big Ten pedigree???  Before any wuff says Purdue is stoopid, Chancellor Randy bleeds Boilermaker blood.

Q:  BobLee; does he "care about academics"?
A:  Sure.... EVERY coach "cares about academics" -  in his hiring press conference.  Then he "gets real" and does what he has to do to accumulate lots more Ws than Ls.  He's hired to be a Football Coach.... not a Provost.

The Deification of Frau Yow is the most amusing sidebar to all of this.  Wuffs tend to make their ADs central characters in the on-going high drama of Lupine Sports.  They luv'em or they really really hate'em.... no middle ground.  Frau is still in the "Kay's sister" beloved stage.  History says that stage will end some day.... sigh and alas.   28 miles to the west, ADs are viewed differently.  Of course, not having a "real one" for 16 years has something to do with that.  Bubba The Real AD is top-notch but purposely does not seek the spotlight.  He does not make every decision "about him".  A wise decision in this observer's opinion.

Further discussion of the many positives of "this new guy" & a few niggly negatives in the days to come.  No obvious downside other than lack of familiarity with ACC area..... which is (taa-da) similar to Fedora at this time last year.

All the stories about how he is THE GREATEST YOUNG COACHING MIND IN HISTORY (RealBobKennel?) are waaaay premature.

All the stories claiming HE ONCE JAYWALKED AND HIS GRANDFATHER WAS A SCOFFLAW (UNC loonie) are board monkey crap.

A special Red-ribbon committee to "Nickname The New Guy" has been assembled and is meeting as we speak in the Buckey Twins Room at Amedeo's.  First one proposed was - "Davey D".  Choice #2 was "DD".  Choice #3 was "The Northern Illinoian".  #4 was either DO'B or DaveTheChest because there are a lot of those left-over t-shirts already printed.  One will be chosen before the Intro Press Conf at 4 on Sunday.  Just the right nickname is critical to his success.  Wuffs are big on nicknames.

My initial sense is that this is a classy guy who will not roll around in the rivalry mud with the short bus faction of WuffWorld.  He will go about his business like its a business but with more pizzazz than TO'B had in him.  Maybe a modern day Dick Sheridan.  That would be nice, I think.

Let the yadda yadda and harumphing between rival "bottom-feeding goobers in tire swings" begin......

Dave Doeren is a very good solid selection.
We wish him lots of success.

Bobby, there was never a ruse. It wuz the monkeys AND them that thought they knew what they wuz a talkin' about (self proclaimed know it all's of the sports writers genre) that purported to know who wuz and wuznot in play. My guess is that academic thing (APR and academic all americans) put DD at the top of the list.

__________

BL: I thought it was the "fly fishing"!

More sportswriters troll the monkey boards for "hot rumors" than you want to believe.

..... a goofy Clavin creates the WAR.... a sportswriter picks it up... 1,000 more Clavins jump on it. MUST BE A FACT! ..... Yee Haa!

Have not heard......but assume if he interviews, he is #1 choice.

__________

BL: Gruden was first choice. So LF could not be better than #2.

If Fedora does interview for the UT job.....do you think they are his # 1 choice?

______

BL: If Frau says so. Personally? No, the Eagles' job is still #1 with him; or the Chargers. Better weather in San Diego.

Whats the latest on Gottfried to the Timberwolves? .... or Frau Yow as Obama's Secty of State ??? - (I must give AgentPierce credit for that last one.)

Not to dispute anything that others, who are probably "well connected" have stated or inferred, here is my take on it. And what I am stating can be verified if you listen to the entire Press Conference. First, Coach Doeren stated that he had NOT been contacted by NCSU PRIOR to the MAC Championship Game. He knew the State job was open and had had conversations with his AD, who was at NCSU, and STATE got a good recommendation. He had also done a LOT of internet work and knew a LOT about State....he did NOT want to waste anyone's time. He stated that AFTER the game on Friday night, he got a "CALL ME!" from his agent, Jordan (Gott's agent also). He got in around 6:00 AM to DeKalb (6 hr bus ride). He said that he was presented a LOT of opportunities and told Jordan that STATE was the one he wanted to go after. After that, he said that things happened quickly. He did have some time to go over the offer and to think through it with his family. Debbie Yow was quoted on Twitter from a local sports guy as being in Dekalb. The news broke around 4:45 PM Saturday. I sent Debbie a email of congratulations a bit later. I had been following who and what and Doeren was MY choice (he had NO issues...). As usual, she answered within an hour and said thanks, am on the plane home with him. NOW, did Jordan interview him for us....of course, but both Debbie and Coach Doeren NEVER said that and Coach Doeren said specifically that he had NOT been contacted by State until Saturday morning. Debbie said that we did "talk to four people in person".
All that aside, Coach Doeren has the traits of a leader first, and then a coach. He is way beyond SMART. He, IMO, would be successful in any career. I did note his reference to the folks in NC and Raleigh having the same spiritual values as he and his family.

He is HERE. We are really HAPPY. I have no doubts that he will elevate the program without sacrificing the off-field and academic side. All through the presser, he talked about helping the kids become better and successful. He did NOT talk about how they would all go to the NFL and have bling around their necks and hot mama's by their side.

________

BL: He certainly passes all the early "smell tests" with no concerns that familiarity will breed contempt.... and he has an obvious passion that TO'B simply never had. ... no "car salesman's" traits visible. .....can't imagine any NCSU fan / alumni having any reservations. .... both your bottom-feeders and rival bottom-feeders will, of course, do what they do.

If he keeps any TO'B staff is the next "wait 'n see".

The Cowdog
You don't mind if I do a little back patting, do you, BL.

Told you that this type of individual was not hiding in the weeds.

Not only did State land a coach capable of BCS bowling, but they got one with some apparent ethics.

For the second straight year, the Huskies rank among the top five FBS teams in student-athlete Academic Progress Rate (APR), the national metric used by the NCAA to gauge a team's academic success.
Doeren's dedication to academic excellence is unmatched. Northern Illinois is the only school in the nation to have a player win the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award in both 2011 and 2012. Huskies' two-year starting noseguard, Nabal Jefferson, was named one of 15 winners of the 2012 NFF Scholar-Athlete Award, and is a candidate for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded to the best scholar athlete in the nation. Additionally, Northern Illinois join Duke, Penn State and Nebraska as one of only four schools in the country to place four players on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Team for its region.

Now, as far as who the first choice target was, I can tell you that Doeren was interviewed last Monday. That would be the same date as the others mentioned.

What impresses me most about State's get, and Doeren's commitment, is that it came to fruition with both parties having a pretty good idea that NIU was a strong candidate for a BCS Bowl game.

Something sure as heck impressed Doeren to make the move to State, knowing full well that he'd be giving up somethings associated with that BCS appearance...Some big things.

____________

BL: I'm impressed with everything I've seen and read about Doeren. And I've always been impressed with Chanc Randy. :-)

Here's hoping Dave & Larry can combine to elevate the rivalry above the respective bottom-feeders level.

This was the first thing in email box this morning from a State Grad I know. "Doeren was Yow's choice from the start..." I am glad I wasn't in mid sip of Diet Coke when I read that.

__________

BL: hehehehe.... Dykes & Morris & Franklin were intentionally used as "ruses" to distract Frau's press corps.... OoooooKay! :-)

Regardless, DD seems like a stand-up good guy. A "good get".

Fedora is a great choice. Dave is a great choice. North Carolina produces 4 to 6 times the number of top prospects as Wisconsin. Dave did a marvelous job recruiting Florida for the Badgers. Others recruited Ohio and Illinois. Much easier to get a Florida youngster to live in North Carolina than the Badger ice box. Great choice. If he puts together an outstanding staff, UNC and State will be fixtures in the upper echelons. Wake, I consider a Regional recruiter: Duke a national. No reason, with the in state recruits and some from Virginia, DC, Maryland, that good things will not happen in Raleigh and CH.

_________

BL: I suspect LF & DD will get along harmoniously even if the fan bases do not.

I was on the fence about The Marine. I am impressed with DY's handling of the firing/hiring. Pleased with the choice; I liked Doeren better than the others that were supposedly being considered. One of my obnoxious UNC lawyer (redundant)high school chums excitedly sent me the link to the SI story about DY as soon as it hit the web. Ouch! Hopefully DY won't end up as the most villified AD ahead of Jed and Todd(tarheel)Turner. I guess you noticed that all our revered coaches left on their own- Sheridan, Rein, Holtz. Wish we could change that and keep one we really like. I agree, most of us Wolfies appreciate a good nickname. I guess we need something we can yell over the noise of a running tractor.

________

BL: This young man is impressive. Don't dwell on the past especially 20+ years in the past.

I do think DY has some skeletons from Maryland but maybe she's learned her lessons. I do wonder if DD ran a due diligence on her. Gary Williams is NOT her only detractor out there.

Now to see DD's staff....

At least Fedora is SOUTHERN! Leave it to the woofies to hire some damn Yankee.

_________

BL: Actually DD is from Shawnee Mission KS (a Kansas City suburb)... not technically a "yankee".

I think he is going to be pretty difficult to work up a visceral hatred for on his own merits... as is David Cutcliffe.

BL, just got back from the Press Conference at Murphy Field House. Truly excellent ! Seemed like the whole BOT and Wolfpack Club Boards were there - and happy.
Met Doeren's wife Sarah and three boys. Couldn't ask for a more clean-cut looking family. Gave them scarves we had made up for our 1957 First ACC Championship Reunion two months ago and told them we needed some more Championships. It will be written in the paper and on the web-sites the question and answers, but here are several take-aways as I saw them.
He was always #1 on Yow's list in part because she used the same search firm for Gottfried as well as previously at Maryland (Oh, she's only been at State 2+ years - it just seems like more has been happening).
NC State was the only team Coach Doeren talked with, partly because of the busy run-up to the MAC Championship game. He was asked about not being able to coach NIU in a BCS game, and he answered, "NC State is my team now".
All in all very impressive "show". I talked with Gottfried who was there and told him he was the primary reason that Doeren was on board now. He looked puzzled for a second, and I said if his hiring had not worked out well last year, AD Yow might have been much more conservative in her decision-making last weekend.
Would sure love to meet CNR.

____________

BL: I just watched the video of the intro presser. Yes, VERY IMPRESSIVE man. Comes across as very sincere... not a lot of "coachspeak yadda yadda". .... I think you got a real good one!

Next time you're going to East Texas let me know.

Russell is a better NFL QB this year than Philip.

The near zero (0) graduation rate of basketbballers and footballers at Maryland came under her watch. Seems she beat the posse out of College Park. Much like Lou at Minneapolis.

Don’t waste your time trying to kill the messenger, BL knows the messenger ain’t easy to kill. I rip plenty of fellow Domer, Trojan, Hoosier, and Illini fellow alums. I learned as a youngster that right is right and wrong is wrong, no matter who it might be.

Some MAC coaches and protoges of note albeit most are from Ohio, the cradle of coaches, are: Fielding Yost, John Heisman, T.A.D. Jones, Howard Jones, Earl “Red” Blaik, Walt Alston, Paul Brown, Weeb Ewbank, Blanton Collier, Chuck Noll, Don Shula, Bill Walsh, Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, Bill Walsh, Sid Gillman, Woody Hayes, Lou Holtz, Paul Deitzel, Steve Belichick, Bill Belichich, Bob Stoops, Bo Pelini, Les Miles, Urban Meyer, Sean Payton, Jim Tressel, Gary Pinkel, Ara Parseghian, Bo Schembechler, Jim Grobe, Nick Saban, Lou Saban, Don James, Doyle Perry, Randy Walker, Johnny Pont, Brian Kelly, Jack Harbaugh, Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, Lee Tressel, Joe Tiller, Brady Hoke, Frank Solich, Carmen Cozza, Bill Arnsparger, Larry Smith, Jerry Hanlon, Pete Carroll, Randy Walker, and Don McCafferty.

Give DD a chance. He is not one with an Ohio DNA, but if he can win the MAC, he has accomplished something special. Don’t be like the Aggies who, after Paul Bryant had gone 1-9 his first year, wanted to run him out of town. Patience will out.

One of the legacies of Paul Brown’s Ohio coaching lessons is that coaches believe that, almost to a man, education is of utmost importance. It comes from within to those sons of Ohio’s steel mills, coal mines, and manufacturing giants of old. Education was the way out.

DD is from another part of middle America. Surprised if he feels differently. Count yourself fortunate and get behind him. You have four gems coaching in a small area. You have a wonderful area with top notch people. You have excellent educational institutions. Lucky are you.

___________

BL: DD's KC roots are known only to a few. ... He should be fine if he assembles a cohesive staff and can be a real CEO. No reason to believe he can't. ... I do wonder if he had time to run a due diligence on Frau? I bet he did not.

Interesting comments and column. So, far, the count is about 90 - 95% positive. That includes some finge loonies, but there has been NO Shoulda, Coulda Woulda, Holtz, etc. comments. That speaks volumes about the choice.

As for Debbie Yow. At this point, not many want to let facts cloud their opinions. There is a very good Sport Illustrated column that calls it like they see it. She was not perfect there, but she, as Obama said, had the car out of the ditch and then the NEW AD and Dr. Loh (sounds like an Ian Fleming character) wanted to drive. UGLY. Also the WaPo articles tend to state the same.

Dr. Woodson's line to Jeff Gravely was the Faux of the week. He, off the record, told folks that we would read "all about it" in the newspaper on Monday. Instead, it was Sunday.

So, this woofie, who burned a LOT of midnight and early morning oil reading a LOT of stuff about the four (supposed) candidate is happy. There were "issues" with three that were really, on my Pro-Con sheet, BIGGIES....one really SMELLED. There were really no major concerns about Dave Doeren. He is a solid guy. Good re*****tion. Good moral guy. Great sideline enthusiam. Good football Moxie. Good recruiting. Good control of team (academically and community).

Will he lose some games next year? NAH....he'll win em all. If not, then the fringe will turn. Buy for NOW, the fringe is at peace and baying at the full moon like a pack of WOLVES!

BL, I agree...he is a LOT like "The Hat" (Fedora). They should have a lot of good rivalry games assuming UNC does not "BOLT" and the SEC does not "WOO" the Pack.

______________

BL: I expect universal joy on The Brickyard for 48 hours or so then the usual signs of manic-depression as the staff is announced. All the fantasy league "experts" will chirp and chortle.

I am surprised Frau paid as much to DD as she did. Mighta saved some of Randy's $$$ for staff. Maybe Wendell gave her a blank check ??

Assume THE GREAT Jon Tenuta will be retained ??

Dave v Larry should be good'uns.

I have read several comments on likely problems spelling Doeren. Come on. This conference has coaches named Bzedelik and Krzyzewski. Doeren should be no problem at all.
I thought the same thing about the academics being a priority statement. Doeren is between a rock (the last coach was fired for going 7-5 and small bowl) and a hard place (UNC has shown how difficult is to recruit "Alabama type talent" without Alabama type brains and keep them eligible without compromising the academic integrity of the school). We will see how long the honeymoon lasts

_________

BL: Even Matt Doherty (Daughtridge, Dougherty,....) and Gutheridge were routinely butchered. :-)

If Gott doesn't dance into the 16 / 8 and they don't manhandle UNC / Duke look for howling to begin. Wuffs prefer the howling phase.

Why does anyone care all that much about "first choice"...You get a good coach and that is a successful hire ! Nicknames......bring 'em, they make for easy funny comments......like "the hat" over at the Hill, and that Butch guy that used to be there, and old Huckleberry, etc. etc.
I'm with Wolf Kennel, this looks like a good , solid hire, done in short time....I'm also happy with the choice. I realize it does require that folks dig elsewhere to find a "circus event" to discuss, but that's okay, too....there are plenty circuse events out there !

_________

BL: Those who get their "First choices" care about first choices. Whoever "we get" is ALWAYS "who we really wanted" and "our rivals are really bad guys....". Triteness rules in these cases.

PLEASE... Never agree with Kennel. He prefers the whole Majority of One "Lone Wolf" opinion thing. :-)

I maintain that Wuffs apply and repeat "nicknames" more than most fan bases. You are free to disagree. Nicknames are not "bad things" they simply "are".

The one thing your "wolfie friends" are not thinking about is the assistant coaches he will be bringing with him. That can get you in deep trouble like our defensive coaches?

BL - Have heard all the name jokes if you're named Fedora or Kennel. Chavellor Woodson said at lunch Friday that all the Internet and N&O jocks had no clue what we (NC State) was doing. He said we were in good hands.
I think we got a simple and solid coach with a drama-free search. He's a winner who also appreciates academic values. I couldn't be happier.
Go Pack.

BL: Of course you are TRBK, of course you are. DD seems a very fine choice. Very clever ruse making people think you were going for Dykes or Morris.
