BobLee Says

... on Chicken Pot Pie & Beyonce Thighs !!

Feb 4, ’13:  I lied.  Blondie and I did NOT watch a Bond-athon as our pre-SB47 ritual.  Instead she did a TurnerClassic Movie-athon including “A Nun’s Story” featuring Audrey Hepburn.  Audrey and Beyonce on the same HDTV screen on the same day – YIKES!
...... As predicted we did not go to SB47 coverage until 6:15.... and did not miss a thing of the slightest significance.... MORE

It was a legitimate nail-biter of a game but “watch one football game per year” critics will continue to carp that Super Bowl games are “always blowouts”.  No, they aren’t.  Of the most recent dozen or so, most have been very competitive.

Re: Commercials..... The Salute To Farmers was far&away #1.   I think it was a Dodge truck ad but who knows.....   I warned you in advance about “Bar kisses the Go-Daddy geek” so no apologies for you being grossed out.  I read it took 46 “takes”......  Blondie loves anything involving Clydesdales..... I have no clue what many of the commercials were promoting.  Is “really confuse any potential consumers” the latest trend on Madison Avenue?  Apparently.

Eschewing all the “waaaay beyond over-kill” pre-game hype is really the way to go.  Neither of the teams are well-known “national teams” meaning most of the wimmen at Super Bowl parties looking for a Manning or Tony Romo were confused..... “Why does Brett Favre spell his name that way?  Shouldn’t it be Farve?

Both of the ubiquitous sideline reporters were “guys” ??? Isn’t there some version of The Rooney Rule that says at least one sideline reporter has to be a gal?   Was Leslie Visser not available..... Phyllis George..... Jayne Kennedy ???

Blondie and I tried to recall the last Super Bowl Party we went to.  I think it was the same year we went to “a New Year’s Eve Party”.   One of “the Bushes” was POTUS.  I think it was Daddy Bush.  We are NOT the social butterflies you might imagine we are..... by choice (I think).

I thought Beyonce’s half-time extravaganza was appropriate to the occasion.  Maybe I’ve grown numb to “can ‘they’ actually show THAT on network TV with kids watching” type of spectacles.   I can honestly say I could not understand one word that woman sang.  Not one word.  She certainly has incredible cardio-vascular fitness to strut around like that while screaming and shaking her hair.  As noted in today’s title..... LORDY! That gal's combination of quadriceps and hamstrings is certainly impressive..... INDEED! .....more impressive pair o'  thighs than the fullbacks on either team, I bet.
Acknowledging the obvious titillation aspect of her performance, I don’t think she was advocating “kill all the white folks” or anything about “bitches” but, again, I couldn’t really tell.  Somewhere Tina Turner was yelling "You Go Girl!"
We’ve sure come a long way from Kate Smith singing God Bless America.  Kate's thighs may have been as large but likely not as "toned". Did Kate ever wear a leather bustier and boots?

Blondie made a chicken pot pie in the crock-pot and we had some chips, salsa and guacamole.  We were content with our SB47 fare..... I hope you were too.

Re: The Power Outage..... will SB47 be remembered for the “lights went out”?   Did anyone in the room with you quote Don Meredith at any time during the 30-minute delay?   I did wonder if “Mayor Nagin” was still around NOLA.  He’s not.  That two-bit gangsta is headed to a Graybar Hilton.  I was wondering if CBS would show old footage of all those school buses under water.
I bet we will never really know what happened which means liberal bureaucrats were responsible.   Just another - "What difference does it make?"  I know for a fact that Rush Limbaugh was NOT there.
NOLA is controlled by The Landrieu Mob.  Best guess is that Roger Goodell did not make his "contribution" to a certain political campaign.

Is Ray Lewis 24/7 officially over now?  I never have figured out the legitimacy of his “I’ve seen the error of my wicked wicked ways” campaign.  He seemed to be trying waaaay too hard to convince us he had had some Road To Damascus conversion.  I certainly believe in such experiences but Ray is trying waaaaay too hard.
FWIW..... HGTV did not get on-board the “lets talk about Ray Lewis some more” bandwagon.  All the more reason to stick with HGTV or History2.

All the SB47 mega-hype obscured what was quite a miserable week for Watson Brown’s brother Mack down in Austin.   Major Applewhite’s dalliance with a coed was uncovered and a red-shirt QB got busted on a DWI with a bad license.   The Aggies over in College Station are laughing so hard you’d think Uncle Julius had joined the UT faculty.  Maybe Mack should hire Butch as “a special consultant”.

Re: The Harbaughs..... I think I like John the best.  Jim is simply too manic.   Yes, there was probably pass interference on that last drive and yes, that was critical but......   Some one needs to tell Jim Harbaugh that “crooked refs” only work NC State games.  I thought everyone knew that.

Colin Kaepernick’s eyes are really close together.  I’m sure he’s a fine fellow..... I’m just saying......

It took Alicia Keyes longer to sing the SSB than it took Francis Scott Key to write the darn thing.   Which was longer – her rendition or the black-out?

A Thank You shout-out to the Greater Wilmington Sports Club.  With the Battleship North Carolina as a back-drop, I regaled New Hanoverians last Friday with some incredibly clever repartee.  Remember folks, it’s “ the tennis shop at Hope Valley Country Club”.... and “board monkeys”.   :-)

'I bet we will never really know what happened which means liberal bureaucrats were responsible.' Because conservative bureaucrats are so much more forthcoming? Or there are no conservative bureaucrats?

BL: Alas, I fear "being a bureaucrat" is non-partisan. I "was one" for about a year (that seemed like 10 years). Lord knows how many of my brain cells died in that horrid experience.

Paul T. Lambeth II
I've got a better idea, when the game is outdoors, play the thing in the afternoon, it would do the world good to have the Super Bowl go off at 2pm eastern time.

Now just how the heck is the scantily clad halftime extravaganza gonna work out when it's 17F next year in the swamps of Jersey, betchayerass next years halftime entertainment is an acoustic set from Springsteen with a couple of space heaters to keep him warm.

The fact that Ray Lewis has been in essence the face of defense in his generation tells you a lot about where our overall values are as a society.

BL: The "SB 48 in New Jersey" will be Tebowed to Death for the next 360 days. Aaaaarrrgghhh !

Since MTV first began to dull the senses of a generation in search of their own music, actual musical talent has taken a backseat to glitz, flesh, and imagery. As the art form of music has been further devolved by pop culture and hip-hop, spearheaded by such as American Idol and America's Got Talent, most of what passes as pop music these days is the random black siren trying to look white while warbling some unintelligible nasally noise. Thus said, I did not partake of halftime as it would have been a repeat of the Grammys, Concert For Sandy Relief, or any other number of recent musical events.
The Puppy Bowl IX on Animal Planet sated my halftime needs. Thank you, AT&T U-Verse DVR for the last half hour of Key Largo during the power green out.
If I had needed music, I would have dialed up Beggar's Banquet by the Stones, Houses of the Holy by the Zeppelin, anything by the Temptations, Four Tops, or Junior Walker and the All-Stars on the iPod.
Nagin, Landreau, et al deserve NO and NO deserves them. While I have been there on many occasions, it is no more a destination than is NYC.
You loaded up this one with money lines. The first one, "Did Kate ever wear a leather bustier and boots?" put a haunting sight in my mind. Yikes!! The second, "Some one needs to tell Jim Harbaugh that “crooked refs” only work NC State games." made me momentarily pine for the message boards. Two seconds later, it passed. The last zinger was "Alicia Keyes longer to sing the SSB than it took Francis Scott Key to write the darn thing." and it's proof that all comedy contains a bit of truth.
SWMBO is still SWMBO and I know when I have met my match. However, my SWMBO does it with the grace and charm of a born and bred Southern Belle, often leaving my Northern colleagues to wonder if they've just been snookered.

BL: Blondie did Key Largo AND a companion "gangsta flick" with Jim Cagney. She has become a TCM "meth-head" - a TCM tweaker !!

That Alicia and the SSB zinger went "national" by noon. At least among the mouth-breathers who knew who Francis Scott Key was. .... sigh.

Bill Brockman
Rumpole was a crusty old British barrister. A criminal defense attorney. He had no equal in crustiness, except for his wife. Though he held her in the highest regard, loved her dearly and affectionately and received the same from her, when she was not in earshot, he called her "She Who Must Be Obeyed"--SWMBO for short.

BL: Fellow BLB JDanWuff uses that re: Mrs JDanWuff too. :-)

OMG, BL! We be brothers by a different mother and father. After TGC, Man v. Food and Triple D are my other default viewing choices when nothing else is on worth watching in the evening. And that's a lot of evenings, even with the offerings of USA: Suits, Burn Notice, etc.

Do you also enjoy Person of Interest and Blue Bloods? They are just about the only "legacy network" shows SWMBO and I watch. If you "get" SWMBO, you earn extra credit. Hint: PBS did a lawyer show a few years ago called "Rumpole of the Bailey." That was the acronym for the featured character's beloved. It is perfect for my espoused. If you need further explanation, Coach Reed can tell you what I mean when I say that if my wife had been a male child, she would have gone to JHS. She would have been in the honors class, wrestled and played shortstop on the baseball team.

Cheers, my friend!

BL: Can't decode it but figure its complimentary. ... Yes on both POI and BlueBloods. Don't catch all POIs thought. Suits and Justified are at top of our list.

Actually that guy on Man v Food is a tad too much at times. Guy however is appropriately Cali-weird.

Best thing about cable TV: the birth of The Golf Channel. Thanks to it, I was able to avoid all the pre-game crapola and play my favorite game on a magnificent afternoon down here in N.O.L.A. To make things even better, the presence of the SB in the Dome made the course virtually empty of other players except for those who, like me, simply love golf.

Thus, on returning to the old homestead a few minutes after kickoff, I was able to switch between the SB and Phil's 41st win whenever I wished. "When I wished" was every commercial, the halftime "extravaganza" and the power outage. Since I didn't know the outcome of the tournament, it was like watching live. In fact, Phil and Brandt put on such a fine show, I left TGC on during a lot of the "big game."

Since it is harder and harder to identify with the players now in the NFL, virtually impossible to attend games live because they are so cost prohibitive and extravagantly time-consuming and so boring to watch due to the countless inane commercials, I suspect it won't be long before I give up on NFL FB entirely. And I played organized ball from 3rd grade to 11th grade and was once about as passionate a fan of the game as anyone could be.

On the other hand, if, as El Rushbo suggested this afternoon, The Great O has his way and the game is made safer, more humane, by implementing a rule that tackles can only be made with one hand after the tackler shouts an appropriate warning at the ball carrier or quarterback, maybe I'll reconsider.

BL: Bill, I know your love of Golf but I think God actually invented "cable" for Man vs Food and Guy Fieri. :-) .... and, of course, Roger Ailes' Angels on FoxNews.

uncle ron
Madison Avenue is as bereft of talent as the end of the three Triangle schools' benches this year.
Beyonce would make a splendid Catwoman.... carry on!

BL: INDEED she would!

I am finally ready for Ray to go to ESPN or wherever. What bothers me most is he is not a role model for anyone. The Atlanta unpleasantness aside, little is said about his six (?) children by four women and not being married. One of his daughters and Harbaugh's daughter go to school with my daughter. Nice kids my daughter says. If Ray and others were more like Cal all would be much better. the fact that 70% or so of NFL players are bankrupt two years after retirement says something.

BL: He apparently has an appeal to some market segment ???
2/4/2013 12:37:36 PM

Chuckling as I read your post. New Year's Eve parties went by the wayside well before Superbowl parties did for me. Great when you're young, but I like to say that I've "outgrown" them!

Seeing as I didn't listen to the "thighed one", I can't comment on her vocals, but I don't understand the words of any younger singers of today. Maybe that's because they just, flat out, cant' sing. BTW, Tina Turner just got her Swedish citizenship. Maybe Phil and his golf buddies in CA will follow.

I'm with Blondie on both, TCM and those Clydesdales. I only viewed the commercial, and it still brought tears to my eyes! I'm too much of an animal nut, I suppose.

BL: After Audrey, there was Mr Roberts with Henry Fonda and Jack Lemmon.

Madison Avenue has deleted "every BLSays reader" from their "care about" demographics.

Erin Andrews??? Where was she?? I love her!

I have ALWAYS thought Bret spelled his last name ‘wrong’! What’s up with that, anyway??!!! Just figured they misspelled it on some school form for him and it remained that throughout his life. Or at the very least, they misspelled it on his uniform and it cost too much to have it redone!!!! Thinking, “oh, he won’t be here that long anyway”!!! HA! :-)

I was semi, sort of, offended…I DID keep thinking…I am SOOOOO glad my kids are not still little and watching this. And, what are MY kids going to do with THEIR kids (my grandkids) when things like this come on?? I really thought lots of it were totally unnecessary and COULD NOT be “G rated”.

Re: lights out….ALL I could think of was: glad this is NOT in Atlanta………we’d never hear the end of “the night the lights went out in Georgia”!!!!!!!!!!! And --- BEST of all….my daughter, Christine, texted me…………”I told you, I live in the 1800’s!” I laughed long and out loud!!!

And, agreed………….the Alisha Keys……….waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy overboard. I kept thinking she thinks she’s going to outdo Whitney. I thought it was – well, not awful………….but, getting there.

BL: Maybe The SB was suppose to be "an extension of the 2nd Obamic Coronation" ???

Erin works for FoxSports now and this was CBS' show.
2/4/2013 12:02:59 PM

...and speaking of quadriceps, hamstrings, and thighs, I heard on the morning news that 1.3 Billion chicken wings gave their last full measure of devotion last night... had 30 or so myself.

BL: I think Beyonce's are "bone-in". Ya think there are Beyonce-nuggets ?
2/4/2013 11:35:04 AM

BL, I know this is a little dull and scholarly for your website, but a sober look at last night's festivities:

The latest lunacy: new official holiday the Monday after SB Sunday, because so many millions are hungover and can't go to work.

Move the freak show to Saturday night; none of those folks are going to church on Sunday any way.

BL: Another worthy crusade to start. Another excuse for guvmint workers to stay home.
2/4/2013 11:22:26 AM

"It took Alicia Keyes longer to sing the SSB than it took Francis Scott Key to write the darn thing. Which was longer – her rendition or the black-out?" They should have dimmed the lights and had Barry White come out and join her.

BL: Don't say "dimmed the lights" around NFL officials today. :-)
2/4/2013 11:13:46 AM

That Beyonce woman is scary!!

BL: "Scary" among other things. I think she is "a decent human being" at least by R&B / hip-hop / rap standards.

Tina Turner did that same act 25 years ago with smaller thighs.
2/4/2013 11:11:21 AM

Great column as usual (right with you re R. Lewis' "conversion"). Has anyone suggested that the Super Bowl be played on Saturday night? They take an extra week anyway, so it's not like there is not enough time for the coaches to prepare, or for the halftime performer to decide which lignerie she is going to wear. Would you be willing to start a campaign to take this crusade on? I think I know the answer, but thought I would at least give it a try.

BL: I do love "a crusade". I'm for playing the SB one week after the division chmps with The Statler Brothers as permanent 1/2 time show.
