Hugh Thumps Rick at The PNC

Jan 28, ’13:  10+ years ago an individual (assumably an NC State partisan) proffered on the Internet that NC State, and everyone affiliated with the institution, was far superior to their UNC-CH counterparts BECAUSE - General Hugh Shelton was a greater human being than Rick Dees..... I thought about that this weekend as Danica Patrick announced her new boyfriend and The Pro Bowl was played.....

    VS

My congratulations to all my adult NC State fan-friends with real lives.  I expect your excitement and delight with the outcome of Saturday’s basketball game was similar to mine (and my adult UNC fan-friends) after Gio’s punt return back in October.  You cheered loudly as the outcome was determined.  You high-fived like-minded friends and family.  You acted giddy for an hour or so...... then you gradually came back down to earth and made sure your children were not running with scissors and that someone had thought to walk the family dog.  ...... lower species of fans in both camps responded “differently”.

Board monkeys do what board monkeys do when “their team” either wins or loses to “a hated rival”.    Either extreme reaction is “not pretty” and causes reexamination of Charles Darwin’s theories as to which direction human evolution has moved. Bringing us back to Hugh The General and Rick The DJ.

The Hugh versus Rick comparison is a version of my rivalry homily that:

“All of them are like the worst of them.....
All of us are like the best of us.
Ergo all of us are much better than any of them.”

There really are bi-peds among us who hold fast to that belief.  Visit a local mall and you’ll see’em lurking around.   Wear a HazMat suit and latex gloves.  Do ya think the goober that uttered "Hugh v Rick" has been allowed to breed?  I hope not.

My retort to "Hugh vs Rick" was "Pres James K. Polk vs Charles Shackleford".   I figure "the guy that invented Sweet Acidopholus Milk" is indeed a better human being than Lawrence Taylor.

How do UNC’s notorious uber-liberal sorts deal with Obamic “Baghdad Bob” Robert Gibbs being a Wuff?  Life’s fulla perplexing ambiguities, ain’t it.

For the dregs in the Chapel Hill camp..... this is “Roy’s team”.... ergo “Roy’s Fault” – Ouch!  Just ask Phillip Bridges ’86.  That this year’s roster lacks the talent and experience of traditional UNC teams is simply a fact.  Blame it on “The Calipari Way” that is in en vogue now.   Play “what if” Kendall Marshall or John Henson had stayed one more year.   Concentrate on “the gallant comeback” from the anticipated mega-rout and blame the refs for the early fouls on McAdoo.  Play whatever mind tricks a “dreg” has to play to avoid the painfully obvious – This NC State team is “better” than this UNC team.   Or certainly was last Saturday.

If so, what does this mean for “this Wake Forest team”?

If it had been a 30pt+ rout would Roy have pulled another Biscuit Boy Cut 'n Run?  I don't think so, but ya never know.

Another Bizarre Thought:  With two minutes to go, and "Mo Mentum" wearing C-Blue, I expected to see Karl Hess walk on the court wih Gov Jim Martin and announce "Governor Martin has a few questions to ask Roy".   That woulda been a bigger moment than Dudley Bradley mugging Clyde The Glide.

Might UNC revenge this L in a February re-match?  Maybe.  Or perhaps in a possible 3rd game in the post-season exhibition known as The ACC Tournament.... or in the Dance.  Or perhaps UNC won’t beat State for the next dozen encounters.  Such a victory streak would not be a precedent.

Am I the only one who wondered (when State was up 28 in mid-rout) was Julius Nyang’oro watching from his treehouse in Zambia?  Does Julius have “satellite” or was he in a Zambian sports bar? ..... and where was Deborah Crowder?  Were she and Warren watching from a sticky-floored Franklin Street drinkery?

Do African buffaloes have wings?

Has Mark “Moses” Gottfried truly led the long-suffering PackPeople to the brink of the end of the rainbow?  Maybe.  Can the enthusiasm and passion from “hosting GameDay” transfer to more mundane situations?

Can Commish Swofford devise a defense to deny the aforementioned PackPeople their prize?   We all know he’s working on such a plan.

Is The PNC now the epicenter of college basketball?  I read a tweet that said that’s the case.  Who knew?

I thought it was a rule that the home team wore white uniforms.  The NCAA should investigate.

Meanwhile.... after offering congrats to the victors, it’s time for the rest of us adults with real lives to get back to “don’t run with scissors” and “someone has to walk the dog”.   Well.... except for Danica and The Pro Bowl.

I’ve always found the whole “Danica Thing” to be fascinating.  She will always be a media magnet NOT because she is “a woman trying to compete in a man’s sport” but because she is “a pretty woman trying to compete in a man’s sport”.    Her success or relative lack of is Kournikovian.   That Anna Kournikova never won a tournament was not the stigma.  That Anna Kournikova was “a sexy blonde who never won a tournament” was the permanent headline.

“Pretty” always makes a difference when women are involved.  I don’t make the rules.  Neither do unattractive women apparently.  If Danica was “Eunice” and looked like a Waffle House waitress on Exit 58 at 3 AM, everything she does would not be above the fold.  She isn’t so it is.   At least Danica's new boyfriend actually exists.  Ergo no celeb-interview with Perky Katie or Madame O.

They played another Pro Bowl yesterday. I know because it says so on ESPN.com .   Blondie and I did a HGTV marathon yesterday – Property Brothers – Elbow Room – Income Property – and Love It Or List It.   All HGTV all day until 8 PM when Blondie switched to Turner Classic Movies – some ol’ B&W flick with Reginald Gardner and some woman named Beatrice. ..... I finished a 20 hour Mario Puzo audiobook – Fools Die, and squeezed in a 4-mile trek.

Didyaknow.... UNC alum - Ken Lowe - is CEO of HGTV.... but, to my knowledge, has never been Chairman of a Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Now it’s Monday.  Has anyone checked to see if the jerseys are still in the rafters?  Do ya think Phillip’86 has thrown himself under a bus?  If so, did he leave any parting words?

I can tell that's a parody post only because a real Bob post would have contained more run-on sentences.

You know, speaking of the Board of Governors I need to tell you about the time I worked with the late Bill Friday, bless him, to save the integrity of the ACC.
It was 1960 and the Dixie Classic was THE biggest thing in college basketball. Naturally I had front row seats, compliments of the chancellor’s offices at both North Carolina AND at NC State. “Sit here, Fighting Bob!” they would say. “We need to elevate the tone in this here box with a Rhodes Scholar!” Though you understand there were not really luxury boxes then; those were invented by Republicans. But anyway I would sit and watch the game. I always felt sorry for people who did not have tickets; folks gave them away as Christmas presents and in their wills and whatnot. But anyway it was High Cotton for a lad from New Bern even if I knew nuclear physics and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles for even more than they paid Babe Ruth. I always insisted on paying for my own popcorn.
But it became clear that there were GAMBLERS involved in the ACC and points were being shaved. These gamblers were unpleasant Northern types who usually could be spotted by their windowpane suits and the grease in their hair. They also said “dese” and “dose” a lot much like you hear in Cary today. Though Cary didn’t really exist then. It was just a few buildings and some trailers. The Yankees got especially excited about the Dixie Classic because their teams would play in it. Otherwise the only time you heard a Yankee accent in these parts was from the bit player actors on the Andy Griffith show when they tried to say, “Sheriff Taylor” and it came out, “Shur-iff Tayluh” like some Brooklyn kid from a movie.
So anyway being Fighting Bob I caught on to the gambling early but didn’t want to say anything because how can you be sure of a thing like that? But it was no surprise when one night the phone rang and it was Bill Friday, in tears. “Fighting Bob,” he said, “I regret to inform you that there is GAMBLING and POINT SHAVING going on in the ACC.” I told him that this was no surprise to a Rhodes Scholar. “Er, right,” Bill said. “But Fighting Bob … what do we do about it?”
As all my fans know, those are the words which have always galvanized me into action even though I am a modest sort and do not like to tell other folks what to think or do. But just like when Teddy R asked me the same phrase at San Juan Hill, I did not flinch.
“Cancel the Dixie Classic, which is a Den of Iniquity!” I said. Bill gasped and said, “They’d lynch me!”
“Never mind that,” I said. “State people are always complaining.” “But Bob,” he said, “there is gambling at That Dear Place as well.” He always had a soft spot for UNC, did Bill. I don’t know why. Guess they gave him that TV show and that was it.
“Cancel it anyway,” I said. “All must suffer.” And he did. And he saved the integrity of the ACC by following my advice, and that is how we did it.

Hey Bobby, great column, however I think you missed the rumor that Harvey Specter was speculated to be Danica's next beau in waiting.

Finally had a chance to watch the UNC-State game that I had DVD’d while I attended a couple of reunions in St. Louis.

Many of my Hoosier friends filled my answering machine with messages regarding the pre-game festivities that took them back to Southern Indiana during the Golden Age of Hoosier Hysteria which was the period between the end of WWII through the 1962 season.

Congratulations go out to CowDog. He had to love it.

Tourney is going to be fun. . .fun….

Far from a kool-aider, I regularly take abuse for not drinking the kool-aid. I tread the middle ground. The reference was to your Dudley Bradley "mugging" comment - a call back from your last column to which I responded on that point. I thought perhaps you were being witty.
___________

BL:
"being witty" ??? On such a deadly serious issue as which area college is universally superior to the other? This is very serious stuff. :-)

BL: too cryptic for me there '84. I seem to recall you as a pretty hard-core UNC Kool-Aid drinker. Are you blaming "the refs" or "Roy" for this one?

Although I grew up as a die hard Carolina fan, I went to State because my math teacher said State would be my best fit, and it was. Being a State in the mid 60s with a bunch of Carolina friends and a Carolina gril friend was an excellent situation. I am just very happy to have State as a competitive member of the ACC again. I think it is good for all. BL, could you please list your books/authors you enjoy. I have tried two on the list and they were great.
______________

BL: I concur that a competitive Triangle sports scene is good for all concerned.

My list of favorite authors is posted on the right-hand column. James Lee Burke and CJ Box are my favorite of the favorites.

State could be the ACC winner this year (maybe both regular season and tourney) if they continue to play like they did Saturday. They have the talent, and if they keep the passion, they'll beat Duke in the devil's den. As bad as we were, I am proud of the fact that, against all odds, we came back within five late in the game. There is hope! I've been saying I want State to get back to contender status, and it appears they're doing just that. Good for them.
____________

BL: I too was pleasantly surprised at the 23 point comeback. Did not think this UNC team had that in'em. With "one/two and done's" now the norm, I think dynasties will be much harder to establish.... for any school.

Even Coach Cal has slipped this year.

Isn't it neat how some things just work out? The Poker world had the perfect set-up with the hole cards that are pretty but never win: A-K. It worked out so well to call it the "Anna Kournikova". Thanks for the parallel reference.

It is a good day, BL, but I'll make my comments in simple declarative sentences since you pretended? to not understand my last comments on the previous blog. Should not have snuck in a political joke.
Good win for State, and some of the best basketball State has played in decades for the first three quarters of the game. NCSU68Grad's comments were right on the mark. We're getting there.
UNC BOT had a joint meeting with the NC State BOT last Friday at the Park Alumni Center. I was the greeter and had the chance to meet each of the Trustees as they came in. Some I already knew, but others only through BobLeeSays. I was nice and gave each of them a copy of that day's Technician which had a really excellent article and picture on Dean Smith and NC State's appreciation for him.
Gen. Hugh Shelton is a great person in any comparison, and his Leadership Institute at State for the past ten years is excellent and even life changing. My grandson is attending this summer.
As for the Pro Bowl, it is weak, but homeboy Russell Wilson was jobbed out of the MVP (and free SUV) despite 8-10 passing and three touchdowns in the second half. Hang on to that Gio lightning bolt as a series "Outlier".
___________

BL: BK, I'm just blessed that we get to read your thoughts here. Over-our-heads though they may often be. :-)

I'm sure General Shelton is a very fine fellow.... one of many many thousand in the NCSU alumni data base. I think UNC only has a few hundred such.... all of whom are, thankfully, personal friends of mine.

How one's choice of a college can determine one's societal value continues to mystify me. Lord knows, I realize there are "some" UNC alums who believe VERY much in the "we are better people" concept. Ya reckon? I've never been one of those types.

Dissing of Russel was, no doubt, tied to the GLOBAL Conspiracy against WuffWorld (or is there also a GLOBAL Conspiracy against Wisconsin too?) I get my GLOBAL Conspiracies confused.

WOW, BL, you covered a LOT of territory.

Danica Patrick's "handlers", which come from the Little E gang, HOPEFULLY, have done a good TMZ check on her new squeeze. Her EX hubby, if the tales and the stories were correct, was her Physical Therapist. Obviously he rubbed something correctly and got a response. Problem was (is) that when he was practicing in AZ, he would practice on underage girls.....OUCH. He said it was all professional and that he only helped the 16 YO with her homework....she said it was consensual.....SO hopefully, the new BF has no such skeletons...

As to the PNC and the win....it was a WIN-WIN for the pack. Game day was very positive. Where else can you see your long tressed FB playing a mean guitar and Scotty McCreery singing "Folsom Prison Blues" and have your new FB Coach Doeren do a rhythm or bass guitar bit. That YouTube video was great. Debbie Yow came up with new recipients for the "Hess" award (WP Unlimited) and they got a standing O. Saw (looked up to) Tommy B. in the VIP gate and figured he was going to be on court with a sport jacket and Red Tie. He and DT were. as was our 83 reps.

The game was good....to say the least. Never any real doubt, but a bit of de ja vue, almost, at the end. Never thought that we would lose, just did not know how exciting it would be....

The signs were great during the ESPN GD and the Game. The Lance Armstrong as the poster child of the Carolina Way was probably the best.

Twill be interesting to see how the ACC plays out. Tickets for the Tourney from "I ain't goin..." fans from some local schools are already being scoffed up....by folks that love BB and the scalpers. The WPC has sent out a general mailing and have committments from some DISTANT teams to peddle their allottment.

You did NOT mention the Duke - MD game.....the Cameron Crazies are really "unique"....where else would you have a student body that held up "Good Riddance" signs.....and THOSE supporters of THAT soon to be a NON-ACC school are NOT flocking to the ComCast ticket window to camp out for the ACC Tourney tickets....like they did in 2002 and buying up all the FSU tickets that were being sold for half face.

Have a nice week....

BL: Haven't heard the dirt on Danica's ex.... but if it "was on the Internet" it MUST be true - by golly!

I haven't read any silly crap from either UNC- NCSU bottom-feeders that was not totally expected. More predictable than swallows and Capistrano.
