AgntP: America Hates Duke... because it is Too ____?

BobLee will kick over a outhouse as with his recent “Is Dean Going To Hell?” column; but often assigns me "a hot potato". Ergo Duke’s “too whiteness” ended up in my In Box.

Two of my growin’ up chums – Coby and Leo – matriculated at Duke as did Raleigh’s #1 Limo Liberal aka “the eeeevil Jim Goodmon”. I can’t speak for Jimmy G but I know Coby and Leo came from an environment waaaay different than the mean streets of Newark or the gated estates of Upper Saddle River.   Neither drove a BMW nor did either live off any “trust fund”.   Both were Methodists, not Jewish, but I don’t think Duke’s former nickname of “Methodist Flats” had anything to do with their choice of a college. Maybe my stereotypes of “a Dookie” were skewed by Coby and Leo.

This week’s column from some guy - Mark Lynch (a Duke alum) discussed all the convenient Duke stereotypes and added a few new looloos.   Unfortunately Lynch's column is on a subscriber-only website - so I can't link you to it.

To stereotypes..... BobLee is a UNC alum yet he is a crazy right-wing fanatic and quite heterosexual.   Most (but not all) of his UNC pals are too. Of his many NC State friends, none drive tractors nor (admit to) have sex with domesticated farm animals. His Wake Forest pals all dance.   But..... we are to believe that the multi-layered Duke stereotypes are authentic ???

This Mark Lynch's treatise says America’s universal hatred of Duke is akin to why the 3rd world hates America...... America is perceived as (1) Too successful.... (2) Too arrogant about its success and..... (3) Too White.

I’m confused as to who is this America that hates Duke. ..... Are Duke-haters like fanatical Islam or genocidal Sudanese or Dennis Rodman’s pals in North Korea? Isn’t being hated by those factions “a good thing”?

I’m a white American who seeks and applauds success. I’m white and live my life in a white-centric world. I am on record as disapproving of arrogance particularly if it is unwarranted (as in based on some faux-contrived “Way” !!).

Would an analysis of Duke’s basketball success over the past 50 years reveal that a higher % of their premier players have been of the Caucasian persuasion? A higher % than the national average.   Are such records kept?

I listed a roster of Caucasian Blue Devils above that are familiar to any college basketball fan. Of Duke’s non-Caucasian players, several were “light-skinned” which might add to a visual perception of “whiteness” – Grant Hill, Trajan Langdon, Jason Capel, Johnny Dawkins, Shane Battier, Seth Curry.

Do Duke critics think Coach K uses a PMS wheel to measure a recruit’s epidermal suitability to “be a Dookie”? Like a Cary HOA inspector approving mailbox colors ??? Jalen Rose suggested such a year or so ago despite Duke aggressively recruiting his Fab Five teammate Chris Webber.

Would Duke be less hated if their roster contained more Mandingo Warriors? Do American Duke haters have a decided preference for Mandingo Warriors?

If Duke does have a recruiting quota system how does that equate with their supposed connection with Dick Vitale who has been the #1 cheerleader for “urban basketballers” for the past 25 years?

Beyond basketball, Duke’s overall student body has morphed over the past 15-20 years into an Epcot-esque rainbow campus. I’d wager Duke has more undergraduates students enrolled today from Mumbai than it does from Raleigh.   My pals Coby & Leo would be decidedly in the minority on the West Derm campus in 2013.   When the camera pans the Cameron Crazies I expect to hear “It’s A Small World After All”.

“Rich white boys” have a unique place in Duke history as chronicled by BobLee’s coverage of the Duke Lacrosse Case. Did those Gang of 88 Duke faculty potbangers hate Duke for “being too white”?   I got the impression those goggle-eyed ideological nutjobs simply hated humanity in general including themselves.

Was Duke’s Too Whiteness burned into the American psyche when they dueled UNLV in the early 90s? Laettner, Hurley and the beige Grant Hill versus Tark’s MandingoGang.

Is it all embodied in Christian Laettner stomping Kentucky then doing a “crazy white boy dance” when he hit that famous buzzer-beater. The same “ain’t got no rhythm” that Tyler Hansbrough revealed after one of his buzzer-beaters?   Some white boys can dunk.... but apparently very few can do an impromptu victory dance.

Attend any ACC game... heck, attend any SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, Pac 12.... attend ANY “big time” college basketball game in America and the arena will be decidedly Caucasian. If you removed the cadre of player parents behind the benches.... NCAA arenas are as white as a Yale Skull & Bones reunion......   Is THIS the America that hates Duke for being “too white”?

How much Duke-hate is from 25+ years of Duke being in so many big games on big stages and the admittedly intense ferret-face of Mike Krzyzewski being so prominent.   Other than his infamous sideline language what in this man’s career resume merits his being so reviled? If Mike Krzyzewski was your coach with his record of success would you overlook his South Chicago vocabulary?

I get why rivalry emotions are so intense at Ground Zero of Tobacco Road. But for it to apparently be prominent across the country is “interesting”. I thought God invented Stanford so West Coasters would have "their own Duke" to hate?

If I were a Dookie I think I would simply laugh and say “bring it on”. ....... Which may be the REAL REASON for the “hate”.

	Why do I loathe thee, thou paragon of PC? Let me enumerate the ways... First, thou art over priced. Second, thou thinkest that thou are less mentally challenged than the rest of the world. Third, thou hast a solution for every social and medical and physical ill than could plague mankind. Fourth, thou art the FIRST to tell us why, based on 1-3, that we, the shallow and illeratate thinkers, should bow (like Obama does) and kiss thy ring. HOLD THE PHONE.....I think I just made a case against UNC.... OK, the above are true for Duke also.....Fifth, thy student body will stand up for the less fortunate and provide employment for less than pristine and hygenically clean females who undress for pay and perform other soliticious acts. Sixth, since thou art so enlightened, thou can reject all materialist things and concentrate on the educational process (RE - the student that MADE 15 or so jocks and published her "Horizontal" thesis) or perhaps the shining moment of thy career at DUKE came from spending the night in K'Ville during a freak snow storm and cold snap.....while studying for those tough quizzes. I guess that hating Duke is about hating Carolina....there are SO many parallels, that it would drive an ancient Greek mathematician to ordering a hemlock martini, shaken - not stirred. Maybe it was the LAX incident where the faculty and students convicted the LAX team without a trial....albeit they were (based on the reports of their past behavior) MORE than capable of such.....banging pots and pans on Sunday Morning and taking out full page ads shows how advanced and intelligent the lot is...and the four main players were instant millionaires without purchasing a single NC Educational (yea right) Lottery Ticket.... Speaking of that.....the Lottery gurus had a SPIN AND WIN table at the ACCT....since they bought JumboTron time. You got a prize (tote, sun shades, push up bra, choice of ACC Team jock strap, etc.) when you spun their little wheel....BUT you have to purchase a Lottery Ticket first. Hows that for keeping the ACCT from becoming specialized..... __________ AP: What can I possibly add to that? Do you actually know (and regularly interact with) any "Dookies" that fit your definition? I don't; nor do I interact with your Wuffs that supposedly cavort with barnyard animals whilst atop their John Deeres. Yes, I do know a few VERY STEREOTYPICAL Tar Heels however. :-) .

	Hey AP, Just curious if you have ever met Coach K at some super secret Triangle local right wing event? Or have you met him period? I don't like anything Duke athletics, but I'd let my kid play for him in a New York minute. _____________ AP: Very superfically at a Jimmy V Foundation event several years ago. I don't pretend to "know him" personally on any level. I know others who do however. He is, as you would expect, a high profile celebrity who understands the pluses and minuses of that reality.... especially in this metro crockpot we live in. .

	I think many North Carolinia Wal Mart Tar Heel fans hate Duke because it has been passed on down to them for generations. The way I see it is that the Tar Heel fans are behind it because the Duke people are mostly smart and rich. Probably 99% of the people who go to Carolina would go to Duke if they could get in and if they could afford it. I think it irks the Carolina crowd because the Duke people are happy while the Carolina crowd try to compensate for Duke happiness by being smug and condescending in their Carolina blue shirts. I went to neither place. I graduated from Wake Forest University where the Lord taught me to be objective and fair. ____________ AP: Why UNCers (or Wuffs) "hate Duke" is likely easier to theorize than the so-called National "hatred" of Duke. Sports fans in the Midwest/West et al have likely never met "a Dookie" and have no first-hand experience assuming that "Dookies" are a unique breed. Stanford alums are "the Dookies" of the West Coast. In the NE, I assume Harvard, Yale, Princeton divide the animosity. I would challenge your hypothesis that "they would all go to Duke if they could". .... But I love that you post that POV. :-) .

	Being new to the area, I had to ponder Duke pulled my "hate chain" when the other area U's don't even register curiosity. Maybe it's the Methodist thing (long personal story), dunno. But I went to a small, well-endowed private school where most of the student body were Caucasians, so you'd think that it would be a natural fit. Boiling it down, I think that it's the liberal thing. Not only are they liberal (what campus, aside from Hillsdale, isn't?) but they are so smug about it. So smug that they can't even tell you what conservatives believe, much less discuss their point of view without simply repeating what they've been told. All they know is that they're effing right. You get all that for, what, $53 grand a year (total cost)? ___________ AP: But Duke is no more overtly liberal than UNC... or Berkely, Harvard, Wisconsin etc. I might argue Duke students are even less so. Now the rich, trust fund image is certainly prevalent. .

	A lot of these nimrods hate because that's all they have. If you're the sort of dork that lives your life vicarously through some athletic team at some school, you probably hate anything and everything that succeeds over your "school". Most folks I know enjoy the fact that their alma maters have some sort of success at sports or academic endeavors. The jousting with friends of other schools is lighthearted and fun, but life prevails over "sports". The racial or color make up of the teams matter little. Like certain political persuasions, if you see a team and its success as a byproduct of color and social status, you're placing a lot of your life's happiness in the hands of a bunch of 19-22 year olds, Hate something worthwhile, like cancer, war, and famine. ___________ AP: I always discount post-adolescent goofballs under 25. Its the 45 y/o sad souls that mystify me. :-( .

	There's something of a point to that... It is weird, though, that white guys are singled out to some extent - look at Hansbrough - maybe it's that when a white guy gets commentator attention, people think it's only because he's white? It's a strange phenomenon either way. I have a hard time hating on guys like Ryan Kelly or this version of "Plumlee" because they don't seem to talk too much. On the contrary, guys like Redick and Laettner came off as real jerks occasionally. ____________ AP: If Redick or Laettner had been black would their "mouthing off" been excused as "just trash talking"? Are there different behavioral standards for black v whites ?? .
