And another thing....

March 7,’13:  We shall leave Dean’s eternal destiny to a Higher Power.   Such hypotheticals could take us in any number of socio-cultural directions well beyond theology.   It’s 2013.   Issues are no longer easily compartmentalized within well-defined topics – sports – politics – religion - pop culture – academia – media.    And another thing......

Conclusion: Perceived "good works" seemed to win out over John 3:16 with this audience.  I'd opt for both but that's just me. No topic once opened here is ever closed.   Did you notice that Coach Smith received noticeable support from our vocal ABC contingent?  The “vocal ABC contingent” that gathers here is considerably more charitable in general than other branches of that infamously toxic tree.  A by-product, I bet, of other demographics of this site’s audience.

I have always appreciated and cultivated the demographics of this website’s audience.  I use Boomer-speak and Boomer-references without subtitles.  Doing so leaves some non-Boomers confused..... not unlike I am if I ever find myself watching “The Grammys”.

Five minutes of Grammys or the Oscars and a quick perusal of supermarket tabloids convince me that I am no one’s target entertainment audience.  Was I ever?

Same with new college uniform designs.  If my opinion mattered some one would ask for it.  No one has / is / will.  I don't ask anyone's opinions about my column topics.  It's a wash.

I learned last week that neither Blondie nor Kid had any knowledge whatsoever of what went – “zip went it moved – bop when it stopped and whrrrrr when it stood still.....”.  I promptly sent both a YouTube of Peter, Paul & Mary singing The Marvelous Toy.

In my recent talk to The Wilmington Sports Club I noted that most of “us” grew up with “sports news” being a 7-minute clip after the weather on your local 6:00 News.  That and a sportswriter for whatever constituted “your newspaper”.   Jim McKay dramatized about “the thrill & the agony” as that ski jumper always crashed.  His name was Vinko Bogataj.  Bet you didn’t know that, did you?

We still managed to know who played who and who won.... and who plays next week.  We knew Lou Brock was traded for Ernie Broglio..... and The Celtics won again and Red lit his cigar..... and The Dixie Classic was cancelled.....  and Jean-Claude Killy won a Giant Slalom (whatever that is).   Sports Illustrated arrived in Friday’s mail and there was The Sporting News for box score aficionados.   I was comfortable with that depth of information.

Barber shops buzzed about “The Duke” and “Say Hey” Willie moving out of Gotham for some faraway place called “the West Coast” and that being the end of baseball as we knew it..... watching the hapless Redskins on Sunday with a better fight song than an O-line.  Blondie’s family on the banks of The Mighty Mississippi listened to KMOX’s Harry Caray and Jack Buck describe the exploits of Stan and Red and Enos and Gibson.

Our “way-of-life” is like a shark.  It keeps moving.  It never stands still.  I will NOT stand on my front porch and yell at those darned kids to get outta my yard.... beseech the tide to stop ebbing and flowing.  Demand a better explanation of the infield fly rule or what the term “designated franchise player” means.

I wish basketball shorts were a bit shorter (Damn you Fab Five!) and I prefer “knickers and stirrup socks” for baseball.   I’m ambivalent about “belly putters” and giant titanium drivers.  We survived the fiberglass pole in pole vaulting.  Do people still “pole vault”?   I have no opinion on PEDs.

Some player(s) will indeed “die” in an NFL and/or BCS game before much longer.  Brains and spines and joints have not evolved as fast as the rest of Football.  That inevitable death will not kill the sport

A bowl of multi-colored bell peppers is about as pretty as vegetables can get.

Any BCS-level AD who is not closely monitoring the academic & social progress of his/her 3-deep FB roster and first 12 BkB roster is juggling a hand grenade in oven mitts.

I’m OK with Danica in NASCAR.  Bud Selig is no better / worse than Bowie Kuhn.  Roger not much different than Pete.  I still think David Stern looks like Dickie Baddour.... but David DOES “have a freakin’ clue”.

I’m not sure why “blacks have taken over basketball” although I could fathom a few solid guesses.  I’m OK with that.   I’ll never understand why Volleyball has never developed a mainstream audience.

Wonder what PhilipBridges'86 is up to these days? Who has replaced Roy on PB'86's hate'em list ???

“Gays” will be making inroads in the primary team sports.  I don’t pretend to understand the psychology of homosexuality.  Lesbians and “heteros” share locker rooms now in women’s basketball (yuck!) and tennis and golf.  Would gay men in a MLB, NBA, NFL locker room be any different?...... AgentPierce has some provocative opinions on “gay politics” so I’ll let him deal with that.

Barring nuclear Armageddon, The Rapture or a full-scale take-over of America by The Nation of Islam.... the ACC WILL carry-on post Coach K and Ol’ Roy.  If actuaries are correct, I will be alive to witness that metamorphosis.

In the aftermath of The Great Unpleasantness..... the not-inaccurate stereotypes of all parties involved will not change very much.  Coal changes into diamonds faster than fan bases evolve.

I cannot think of a single sports event I would pay ticket face-value to attend. Or attend at all except under exceptionally comfortable circumstances.  I am fine that others are much less demanding.

On-site attendance for stadium / arena sports will decidedly decline across the board in favor of TV spectatorization.  Escalating “go to the game” prices (and hassles) coupled with ever-improving HDTV technology are reverse tides working to an inevitable conclusion.

The NCAA will, relatively soon, implode on itself.  It is the ultimate anachronism.  Whatever replaces it will be flawed in different ways.

Sports Fans are by definition “an unruly mob”.  The Internet has simply given amplification to their group insanity.  KILL THE UMP!

Truth be admitted..... most "asylums" have always been run by the inmates.

The mind of man is – A Marvelous Toy.   I’ve never known just how it works.  “..... and I guess I never will.”

...... zip..... bopp...... whrrrrr.

+++

If you bet that The Real Bob Kennel would never win NC State's prestigious Watauga Medal ..... you lose.  He just did!   A crazy ol' coot?  Absolutely.  But no alma mater has ever had a more devoted alumnus son.

I read riprake's rant twice. Usually when I see the words liberal, conservative, left, right, bible, heaven , hell and certain in the same piece, I decide I am reading the work of a mental deficient and stop. But in this case, I could not decide if I were reading a brilliant parody with a sort of Elmer Gantry type sermon or if the writer really is serious. Any clue which?
___________

BL: I don't "know" RipRake at all other than the comment you read. That particular BLSays column did permeate into unfamiliar reader markets.

I'm not unfamiliar with Rip's POV as well as RenaissanceWuff's equally "passionate" comments from 180 degrees from Rip's.

The line twixt crazy and genius gets blurrier by the hour.

Nostra-geekus says, "Since colleges and universities as we know them are dinosaurs waiting for an asteroid, the entire NCAA sports scene should likewise look to the sky for their future. This will likely happen slightly before the intersection of hassle and digital satisfaction curves.

Perhaps the NBA and NFL can then get their own feeder series when that happens?

Enjoyed your most recent column. The NC State University home page http://www.ncsu.edu/ shows Bob Kennel getting the award (Picture 2 in the rotation). I didn't realize a face I was seeing each morning online at work was a BobLee guy. Cool!.

Looking like a UNC/NC State 4 vs 5 game on Friday at 2pm in Greensboro (unless UVA loses again). Wow! Gonna have to grill out and have some friends over for that one.

2 useless knowledges (HUH) Curt Gowdy's chief cameraman lived here in Chatham until his death. Lived near me and his home was filled with some of the most iconic pics on most walls&halls from his W.W of S. days. Also I think # 23 UNC started longer BB pants because of his wearing his UNC shorts under his Bulls Uni. although the fab 5 may have pushed it to the limit it is today. Enjoy your site.

My patron saint, Padre Pio, teaches of a path.

Along this particular path one would experience the magnificence of the multi- colored bell pepper, far more frequently than the fruit of spurious proselytism of the wordsmith.

Curious, also, that one would also witness stirrups, both low, and jacked, but not the abominations of the bloused trouser.

The way of the Clemson Tiger must assuredly be the path to the left. It's a little known truth that it was they, circa 1974, that first adorned the pants to cleat. Indeed, the road to hell is paved with good intentions and Kommie Karma.

And another thing...Congrats to fellow Wuff TRBK.

Should you ever bring up the real reasons behind the War Between the States, I should look forward to the exploits of Fightin' Bob Kennel at Sumter.

You ain't right, boy. :-)

You sure stirred up a pot with the Dean goes to Hell article. Agree with CH, the past 3 have been a strong run, not that they all don't challenge one to think, but these 3 have been deep into the "passion" category. As I was raised chanting "Go to Hell, Carolina", there is little doubt where Dean would go, except it's just sports (and a crazy old man's politics).

Hell, in my interpretation, is reserved for Hitler, Stalin, Hussein, Castro, Caligula, and now, Chavez. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

For the information of all those fools who believe "good works" trump John 3:16 (or, for that matter, any of the rest of the Bible), there's strong evidence that Mother Teresa is in Hell, and near-certainty that Gandhi is. I'm also quite certain that none of those who subscribe to salvation through good works (a doctrine more commonly known as Karma in the pagan religions from which it derives) have done anything like as much "good work" as he or she, even factoring in the documented historical proof that the vast majority of Gandhi's achievements were severely overrated and that he had some truly glaring faults his admirers are determined to overlook. If you're counting on your niceness (or the popularity thereof) to get you into Heaven, you really are a fool. A vital part of the whole salvation process is admitting you're a sinner, i.e. that however good you may seem to others or even to yourself, you're no damn good at all by God's standard, which demands absolute perfection.

Of any still-living individual's eternal destiny we have no ability to be certain, as one never knows when somebody will do a complete about-face. Only after death can we be certain beyond all reasonable doubt of anyone's damnation. Of one thing I am certain, however: absolutely nobody who's on the political Left when he dies is going to Heaven, since not one of those treasonous baby-butchering perverts has ever had even a passing acquaintance with the real Jesus, which is to say the one in the Bible that they all regularly mock and attack in their invariably anti-Christian postings online. There's less hope for a "Christian" Leftist who really believes all those blatant lies he's spouting about Jesus being some kind of bleeding-heart tax-and-spend socialist revolutionary than there is for the most hardened and theologically illiterate militant Atheist like Dawkins, since his kind at least know they're not Christians and might be persuaded to change their minds someday. There's no one so evil as a knave with a cause, and the Left consists of nothing but knaves with causes.

I'd say the passage that best applies to the state-worshiping Leftist so-called "Christians" is Matthew 7:22-23: "Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'"

In the actual language of the Left, it'll no doubt be something more like: "Lord, Lord, didn't we indoctrinate whole generations of youth into socialism and nationalize whole industries and enact enormous government programs over the objections of greedy capitalists and hound those same greedy capitalists out of all public squares in your name and fight many a War on Crime, War on Drugs, War on Poverty, and War on War? Aren't we all such super-nice and wonderful people for taxing the rich and spending on the poor, promoting equality for ALL forms of sexuality, aborting unwanted children, and loudly decrying poverty, discrimination, and accidental pregnancy?"

Then, much to their shock, God will not say "No, you didn't!" even though some of them will have been greater slackers at these things than they pretend. (Sloth takes its toll on knaves with causes as much as anyone.) Neither will He say "Is that what you call all your robbery and perversion and oppression and genocide now?" even though that kind of rhetorical question would literally be damningly accurate. No, what God will ultimately say (in slightly modernized parlance) is "Who are you supposed to be!? I don't know any of you from Satan. Beat it, scum! To Hell with the whole sorry lot of you!"

So, to every last one of you Karma Kommies out there ragging on this site for exposing the wishful thinking of your pathetic theology to scrutiny: I don't care how nice you've been when people were watching you (or even when they weren't), how much Scripture you can quote out of context to deceive the gullible, how fashionable and popular a cause you've joined, what failings and hypocrisies you can discover and publicize about actual Christians, or how many good deeds you've done or think you've done. Nicer people with better publicists than you are in Hell; meanwhile, prostitutes and tax collectors are entering Heaven ahead of you (Matthew 21:31). The Biblical Jesus is the only way to Heaven (John 14:6). No theological confabulations of crackpot socialist revolutionaries out in the desert or fool leftist academicians insulated from reality in their benighted universities' inner sanctums need apply (Matthew 24:26).
________

BL: "....theological confabulations of crackpots" and "knaves" in the same comment!!!

As an old WKNC DJ during the 1963 & 1964, the slightly irrevernt Chad Mitchell Trio and PP&M were mainstays.....along with the Beach Boys.....we tried to cover a lot of tastes.

One of MY favorite PP&M cuts, other than Puff (but I picture a DC3 with two 50 Cal Gatling guns) the Magic Dragon, Marvelous Toy and "Paul Talk" Paul Talk was a way for the other two to rest their voices, feet, bottoms, bosoms, whatever. It was light hearted and funny....no profanity.....just humor.

As to the other stuff.....the sports news was usually in The Charlotte Observer and on the evening news.

Fan bases do seem to be a bit more rabid now....maybe it is the "let it all hang out" attitude.....but I guess the folks that did crazy things like taking the FB coach's Corvair and putting it in the courtyard and then figuring out HOW to unfold the wheels so they could sit it down also had some "fetishes" or perhaps unusual behavior....so maybe the Cameron Clan are NOT as idiotic as they seem to be....

Who knows......BUT one this is for sure.....the NCAA may not be a "knocking" at the doors in Chapel Hill, but every other regulatory agency seems to be (EPA for testing "smog" on student; Accredidation for unspecified Academic Malfeacanse; Orange County DA for fraud and NOW the EEOC for NOT addressing sexual assaults - and also discrimination).....Lawdy, Lawdy.....Gov Pat's comments about certain things seem to be getting MORE prophetic every day.....

Bobby, most times I feel you have a keen sense of the obvious (to us of the baby boomer topology) but today I think to escalated to a strangle hold on it. I did know who Vinko was btw... but that's only because it was part of a trivia type contest on a radio station I once was program director of. My better half accuses me of knowing far too much about far too little or things that no one would ever care about. It does come in handy from time to time to know exactly who did a specific song and when especially when they run a contest on the radio (most view me as a ringer and no longer let me participate). My money is on the ACC imploding before the rapture but then that's the easy money bet. If it happens I collect, if the rapture comes first I still "collect".
