By-By TO'B, Maryland & kickers named Barth

By-by TO’B, Maryland, and kickers named Barth

Nov 26, ’12:
Friday was “black” for shoppers and Sunday was “black” for a lotta college football coaches – at least five were axed for their inabilities to “fulfill expectations”......   Earlier last week, Maryland changed UNC-alum commissioners –  leaving Little Johnny for Jimmy D...... and, amid the pines, The Last Barth was bid adieu........

There are children in the 3rd grade that have never known a world in which “a Barth” was not kicking for the Tar Heels.  Nine years, four coaches and 126 Dan Kane N&O columns have come & gone since UNC’s football roster did not have “Barth C.” on it somewhere.  As of last Saturday, it doesn’t any more.  The Barths join The Gogolaks, The Bahrs, The Mares and probably a few other “kicking brothers” in the annals of football.

Art and I tried to recall all of UNC’s “brothers” and got to...... the Kupecs, Moes, Wolfs, Smiths, Streaters, Lemonds, and some others before we realized how old it meant we are.  We omitted “the Wares” because we don’t like them.  I still wonder if they ever actually said good-by to Roy.  I don’t think they ever did.  BTW, it is now impossible to say the word "Kupec" without smirking.

The Kicking Barths from Wilmington are forever “in the annals”.  Thank you Mom & Dad Barth.

++++

Also now “in the annals” is TO’B.  The Ruddy-faced Marine joins Tom Reed, Monte Kiffin, Al Micheals, Mike O’Cain and ones even I can’t remember as “good men” who “failed to fulfill expectations” as Head Football Coach at NC State University.   Many have tried their darnedest over the decades but yea verily none have succeeded in securing The Wolfpack a toehold among The Top Twenty of college football.

Frau (aka “Kay’s sister”) Yow dropped the ax on TO’B on Sunday around noon.  It was not an entirely unexpected public execution.  It set off an afternoon of coach firings that reached “at least five” before ESPN ran out of “______ Fired At _____ University” headlines.

NCSU, Auburn, Purdue, Arkansas and Boston College now join Tennessee, Kentucky,  California and probably 2-3 directional Michigan schools all looking for “someone who will excite our lunatic fringe and keep them reasonably happy for at least a week”.  There will be AT LEAST five more.

The Butcher is sending out resumes marketing himself as “this year’s affordable Gruden”.  Bobby Petrino swears he has given up biker bimbos, at least blond ones.

Once again “building character & running a clean program” proved as valuable as traits for a college football coach as “a great personality & makes her own clothes” helps a girl get a date for the prom.   When push comes to shove “wins” and “breasts” respectively are what’s really important.  In TO’B’s case, a teaspoon of personality woulda helped.   Wuffs have always been suckas for “glib”.  TO’B was always a quart low on glib.

The firing of TO’B means Christmas arrives 31 days early for those of us who enjoy mass hysteria of the Lupine variety.   It’s an acquired taste for sure, but there are darn few events that bring out the scary dregs of human evolution more vividly than an NC State coaching search.

Every fan base has a lunatic fringe, bottom-feeders and a zombie faction.  Lenoir Rhyne and Bob Jones University probably have’em.  They are all capable of running around in circles, chewing off their own arms and beating themselves further senseless with said arms; but none are any more fun to watch that The Brickyard Bunch.

I would never advocate anyone kissing a cobra, subscribing to The N&O, or visiting a nutjob fan forum, but if one was ever going to do so, in the midst of a coaching search is the time to do so.   Keep in mind that the Internet and talk show comments you will be exposed to come, for the most part, from humans who breed, have opposable thumbs..... and can operate heavy machinery.  Scary!

Ya might not think the names Julius Nyang'oro and Jennifer Wiley would come up in an NC State Football Coach Search.... but you can bet the 401-K that they will in this one.  Julius and Jennifer's names come up ANY time two wuffs are talking..... or if one wuff is talking to itself.

“This one” has already gone thru it’s “Sean Miller Moment”.  This time it was a “James Franklin Moment”.   No sooner had a handful of wuffs given TO’B the obligatory "he was a good man” obituarial by-by than the mob moved immediately into “next messiah mode”.

Frau knows Vandy’s James Franklin so he moved immediately atop the list i.e. Sean Miller.   Frau immediately kiboshed that one sending Wuff Mob into Cowher – Gruden – Bellichek – Saban Mode.  One lone wuff mentioned Rick Barnes of course because EVERY Wuff Coach Search HAS to include Rick Barnes.

It must be noted that The Brickyard Bunch & Frau Yow are still in sorta honeymoon mode.  Frau does not have her own FireFrauYow website – YET.  She will eventually because Brickyarders ALWAYS devour their ADs.  If Coach Gott loses two more games before 2012 becomes 2013, look for the bloom to begin to fade from Frau’s rose but until then..... she gets a pass.   Who knew that winning 5-6 volleyball games could so enthrall a mob.

Wuffs thinking “every Great Coach wants to come to NC State” is as delusional as UNCers thinking “every Great Chancellor wants to come to Carolina”.   Both NC State’s Football Coach Searchers and Carolina’s Chancellor Searchers will find themselves in long lines of pining suitors for “the big names”.  Their Champagne Wishes & Caviar Dreams dashed on the jagged rocks of competitive reality.

But yeah verily, whoever they finally get will be – taaa daaaa – “our first choice all along and absolutely THE PERFECT CHOICE” to excite our lunatic fringe until around the second week of September.  By the middle of September 2013, Coach Perfect Choice will be on his own adrift among the sharks and piranhas that have devoured so many before him.

Coach Perfect Choice will, of course, be a superb character-builder..... committed to academic excellence..... yadda yadda yadda ...... and hopefully have a great set o’ tits and be a really good kisser.  Not punting the ball to Gio would be good too.

+++

Meanwhile in The District of Columbia, the twenty-two members of the Univ of Minnesota Alumni Club are positively giddy anticipating the arrival of their beloved Golden Gophers to Byrd Stadium in 2015.  Positively giddy.

It has been said that if you see “a turtle on a fence post”, you know for sure he didn’t get there all by himself.  Similarly, if you don’t see Maryland in a list of ACC member institutions, you can be pretty sure that no one much cares.

Bobby, I carry a yellow BS flag in my pocket. There have been a few times I threw it that the bounce back hit me in the head. This won't be one of those times. All of the comments I've read here miss the point (yours included). DY wanted TOB to be successful, trust me on this. The problem was TOB didn't recognize or wouldn't admit that the boss knew what she was talking about. The rub came from more than a few points.
1. He would not be directly involved in recruiting. She felt we miss too many opportunities to recruit players, especially in state players, because he wouldn't bother to even be involved with their recruitment. If you were a manager for a department in a company and the success of that department was tied to getting top notch people and you told the big boss that finding those people was not "your job" how do you think that would reflect on your standing with that boss?
2. In one specific case DY had to go over his head to retain someone she felt was necessary for the success of the team. Without Tenuta she felt the defense would suffer and she worked out the deal to retain him. TOB should have recognized this long before and replaced Archer (who was NOT successful without Tenuta).
3. You stated that she was listening to the lunatic fringe. I submit that is far from the truth. Part of this was driven by the BIG money. Chuckie was fired because he refused to even meet with a few of the big money people following his last campaign (among other reasons such as personnel issues in that he could not hold on to good coaches). The fringe, while very vocal, does not drive the bus, they merely ride it. The big money drives the bus, and there were more than enough "BIG MONEY" people who had grown tired of what they considered a lack of focus in what it would take to get Wolfpack football to the upper half of the league, especially considering how down the league has become. Part of this lack of focus was his inability to make changes in his staff or philosophy.
4. The first 3 years he blamed problems on the team he inherited and injuries. I view that sort of like our current president blaming Bush for all his shortcomings. Even with that his success was only marginally better in his last 3 years. I dare say he probably wouldn't have been even close if not for Wilson. Wilson alone probably accounted for at least one win a year if not two and for most of the victories over UNC.

For the longest time I was a strong supporter of TOB mostly for his other intangibles. The champions in the classroom and in the community makes for good citizenship. There is no reason not to expect that going forward. What DY felt was missing is the fire necessary to be champions on the field. From that standpoint she felt they continued to do the same thing and expect different results. That is the definition of insanity. Consider this... as a manager if he was working in a company and all of his charges were "good citizens", highly respected and had integrity, that would be a good thing. But when it came to performance they did well with menial tasks, and sometimes did well with daunting tasks, but the stuff in the middle, the day to day, they fared less than average. That lies at the feet of the manager (leader), and that is THE POINT. DY felt she had to find someone who would be focused on not just the daunting and the menial but the day to day, seeking to be champions on the field was part of his job too, he just didn't do it.

__________

BL: I have no strong objections to any of your points. Few/any of us truly know the personality compatibility of DY / TO'B. That's what it usually comes down to.

Now DY is "on her watch" for the future of NCS FB. As it should be.

We have been waiting to read Cowdog’s appraisal of the situation at State. His statement was succinct to the core. Hopefully my comments will reinforce Cowdog’s observations.

“Champions in the classroom. Champions in the community. Champions on the field. . .Well the guy who raised me did go three for three, often.”

Does that have a ring of hyperbole to you? Far from it. His dad is one of the greatest to ever coach a team. From the moment we sat down to talk, I knew I was in the presence of greatness. He so impressed me that I told him that, if I remained in college coaching as a head coach, I wanted him to join me as my top guy.

It did not happen. However, those many years ago, when I heard of his passing with so many more years for him to build champions of life. Cowdog has not known of my feelings at that moment. I sat down shaking and sobbing over the loss of a giant in our profession.

Neither would he have joined me nor any of the other college jobs he was offered. He knew where he belonged and what his mission in life was to be.

Cowdog knows about triple threat guys as well as any.

Interesting to me is the fact that Cowdog would comment after I would comment his wondering if I might know his dad. When we exchanged notes, it was a marvelous moment when I was able to tell him yes, yes, and yes again. His dad was back in my life again.

Well-known and brilliant college coaches learned from Dad Cowdog.

Using two men who were triple threats, JRW and PEB, often they reiterated that I made the right choice to get out of the college business to raise my family by telling me that their greatest joy in coaching came at Massillon Washington High and South Bend Central High.

Both were excellent mentors.

Cowdog is correct in stating that there are gems out there who are fine men of character reeking with integrity. Mine for them, give them the chance and they will definitely get the job done.

As for Tom O’Brien? When the embarrassment is gone (and there is always some embarrassment that goes with the profession) he will be fine. As has been said, often, he is a good man, an excellent man who hit .667.

To the question "Did Tom ever smile?" Yes, when Ron Cherry called a personal foul on a State player in a pile of humanity "for giving him the bizness!"

I will miss Coach O'Brien because I do believe he is what is right about coaches and teams. His players went to class, stayed out of the headlnes, and graduated. The style of football was tough and exciting, with an occassional game that everyone seemed to be asleep. That said, I would not have fired him, but I understand the reasons.

Stars and recruiting are going to be the ruin of college athletics and colleges if the presidents aren't careful.

__________

BL: It was a difficult situation. I suppose I could make a case for either side. Not as easy as UTenn or Auburn decisions.

TO'B is a veteran. He knew the hazards of the bizness.

enjoy it while you can. to think the loonies made the fire tob move is pandering at best. I admit the whole discussion is great fun but please get off your high horse its all been said before. do you like being a one trick pony?

_________

BL: "one trick" ??? I have at least three.

Yes, it HAS "all been said before" - every time State conducts a coach search the same clowns pour out of the same little car and whack one another with nerf bats.... and THAT is the marvelous humor of the situation.

Are you part of the candlelight vigil outside Bill Cowher's mansion?

You know, over the years I've found there are decisions you will be criticized for. Then there are decisions you will be fired for. I'm not convinced Ms. Yow thought her decision through. I'm no big TOB fan, but he had lots of positives. She would be criticized for keeping him. She significantly increases HER chance of being fired if she fowls this one up. Wonder how much the $1.4MM of less revenue she mentioned impacted this whole decision process?

__________

BL: That she made the announcement alone, without the Chanc at her side is to her credit in my view. She accepts that this is HER CALL. We would have NEVER seen that from Dickie.

The Cowdog
I’m a derriere guy, so …let’s get that one out of the way. All other female anatomy references are lost on me…explains a lot.

Yes, we appreciated a man like Tom O’Brien. How can one not? I should know, I was raised by a coach of principle, but I’ll be darned if the pundits don’t seem to have a lot of melancholy beatification lopsided.

Champions in the classroom. Champions in the community. Champions on the field. Hey, I’m not one to say two outta’ three is bad…but when it’s your mantra…well, the guy that raised me did go three for three, often. And he’s not the only coach I played for that did. He wasn’t the only coach that I didn’t play for that hit a 1.000 more often than not.

Look, more than a few of us exFBers knew Yow was kickin’ the tires from day one. It didn’t take a bunch of loonies to tip the cow, BL. ( Though a few with mucho skin in the game deserve a word or two, as Mr. Dail. ) The cow tipped on its own volition. He lost an entire team this year. You know what that’s like, BL?

CNR does, but only as an observer. Can’t imagine he ever lost one.

There’s something else CNR knows. Champion/winning coaches with integrity may not scatter the landscape, but they are not hiding in the weeds either.

References of worry that State could inherit the plague of what UNC contracted, in a push for a guy to top 25 caliber, makes me just shake my head in bewilderment. Makes me break out in laughter every time the donkey tail gets pinned on the Butcher, too. The Pale Rider didn’t bring the plague…some of his rats merely exposed it.

Yow’s timing was right, and it came as no surprise, despite Mr. Kennel’s head tilt.

BTW, Al Michaels was the designated interim coach between Earl Edwards and Lou. He shouldn’t bare his name on your list of failed, though he was indeed a helluva D coach for Lou’s first year, and one of the really good guys.

He shoulda’ called a timeout before the punt. :-)

__________

BL: Only CNR would reference Bob Zuppke! ... My favorite State FB coach was Sheridan, also not a quipster and a bit of a stoic. His leaving still has ??? to it.

If DY thinks she can reach SEC-level without going the SEC-way - Good Luck with that.

Jury certainly has a ways to go to see if LF can do it. Stockpiling 3-deep talent without "exceptions" ???

Years ago, Bob Zuppke uttered a memorable, profound and eloquent statement during one of his five national championship seasons (over a fourteen year period), “A coach is responsible to an irresponsible public.” “Sub sole nihil novi est.”

Ara kicked off to Anthony Davis; Johnny Vaught punted to Billy Cannon; Duffy Daugherty kicked off to Abe Woodson; Red Blaik kicked off to Terry Brennan, and Tom O’Brien kicked off to Gio. The results were the same. It is hoped that this one adverse decision did not cost the Marine his job as the HOF mentors did not lose their jobs.

I would say this to State alumni and fans, Tom O’Brien is not a politician. As others have said, he tells the truth and is honest. For that you should be grateful. Fans throughout the country (I have my boys everywhere) have a respect for your university because of Tom. You are blessed to have had him.

If AD Yow is unable to get Paul Brown, John McKay, Frank Leahy, Fielding Yost, Bob Zuppke, Paul Bryant, Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, George Halas, Bill Cowher, or Jon Gruden on the line; Jim Tressel, Ron Zook, Joker Phillips, and probably the dynamic duo named Kiffin are, or will be, available soon. Pat Haden is a wonderful guy but he has been given the ultimatum, “Pat, either the jerk goes or you go.” Ouch!!

May State come out as well as did UNC.

“Go Irish…beat Bama!” or will it be “Yea Alabama” and “Roll Tide Roll” or “Glory”.
My heart says the first, my brain says the others.

_______

BL: "punting to Gio" was a key straw on the camel's back but likely not the fatal one. TO'B never connected with the looney fringe faction. ... I thought he had the support of the "big boy fans" but apparently that support was not firm enough.

I personally believe Frau allowed herself to be swayed by the loonies. Not the first AD to do so.

I have not heard anyone with a triple digit IQ saying that State can successfully emulate Stanford. Not sure what our model is but no, it is not Stanford. Also, Stanford has not been successful on the football field enough to suit our gang.
Speaking of kicking brothers, UNC had one whose brother kicked for ECU. Lee and Soc Gliarmis were the sons of ***** of *****'s Hot Dogs fame in Wilson.

___________

BL: The committment to go Big Time in college football offers few alternatives. It begins with stockpiling SEC-level talent which, as we have seen, brings other problems to be dealt with.
.

Yow had better be careful with this one. The Wolfpack faithful have enjoyed immensely what happened when the Heels decided to move their football program into the big time. The conventional wisdom is that you can win without cheating. If your program is established, maybe. I'll just be damned if I can see how you can recruit the kind of athletes that Ms. Willingham described and keep them eligible legitimately. I am thinking Yow is out on a limb now. Our new coach, her hire, will have to win more than 7 games a season, without signing too many academic exceptions. I am thinking David Copperfield, the magician not the orphan.

__________

BL: Frau may be thinking she can pull off the Stanford Model. That will VERY difficult for NCSU without a national brand or national alumni. ... Duke could duplicate that easier than NCSU can.

Plus, Stanford does offer several "eligibility majors" but not as blatant as UNC's version. I don't see any "Lock-down Savior" on the horizon. We seem to have lucked out with LF but the jury still out on what his recruits do around campus.

BL,

IMO, TO'B was not the right pick initially because he saw NCSU as a way station along a path that would end with himself in a beach house, not a place that he sincerely expected to earn an invite to the ACCCG every year. To him, Raleigh was somewhere he could average 7.5 wins a season for as long as he wanted until permanent retirement was chosen on his time somewhere between Murrell's Inlet and Amelia Island. Having 'proven' himself at BC, I believe he saw the State job as the opportunity to coach in a warmer clime, with more resources than he had in Boston while also not having the pressure to win that comes at a 'football school'. Just run a clean program, beat Carolina or FSU every year and make a bowl annually and it was smooth sailing. My guess is that now you roll the dice with a young guy who is hungry and 'wants it' bad enough.

__________

BL: That's a popular line of thinking and plausible. Maybe not totally "fair" to TO'B even if correct.

Continuing the coaches & girls analogy ..... "a young one who wants it..." is always in demand.

BL, "wins" and "breasts" made me do a spittake.

I'll never forget one of the baseball columns by Roger Angell decades ago, where he said Mets catcher Jon Stearns had good speed, "which for a catcher is just about as important as good handwriting."

BL: What people "say" and what they "really want" is rarely the same.

BL, well written and insightful article. For me the Thanksgiving Weekend is not totally over. Saturday at the NC State -BC game the seat holder to my right and the one behind me started in on Coach O'Brien before the game started. The news yesterday that Coach O'Brien had been relieved of duty caught me totally by surprise, but I had already planned the Thanksgiving thoughts below. They still fit.
I believe in Institutional Control whether for government, church, or university. At NC State I trust our Institutional Control with the strong leadership we have, and I just want to give thanks for our football team and program from top to bottom.
Chancellor Randy Woodson - he has been wise and caring about sports in general. He made a definitive AD hire in Debbie Yow. He has also navigated the Trustees, Board of Governors, and NC Legislature with lower budgets and re-organization for the future.
AD Debbie Yow - she has been strong and straight forward with several new hires already showing their worth. Her five-year Strategic Plan for Wolfpack Unlimited is well documented and well underway. She has command of the budget issues and is absolutely committed to academic integrity.
Coach Tom O'Brien - I am thankful for his time with NC State including his 5-1 record against Carolina; graduation for his 16 seniors; dramatic winning bowl record; family and country loyalty; clean academic records; inclusion of our over 400 football alumni;
character of our team in the community; and required individual discipline.
Quarterback Mike Glennon - as one of our high level recruits, he has been triple strong in waiting his "turn"; his durability in not missing a down in two years; and maintaining enthusiasm when multiple catches are dropped. I wish him well in the NFL.
Running Back Shadrach Thornton - as one of our mid level recruits who was fifth string at the beginning of the year, he came on strong with multiple 100 yard games at the end of the season. I look forward to watching him mature even more over the next three years.
Defensive Back Earl Wolff - as one of our low level recruits he has given NC State strength and class for four years to become an All-Star who will be an NFL draft pick. I am also thankful for his family who raised him right as well as serving our country.
Even if I don't agree with the fact or timing of O'Brien's release, I understand the reason's behind it and will support our "Institutional Control" decisions so much more than our lunatic fringe urgings. In any case, I am thankful for Coach Tom O'Brien who is a good man and a good coach. Best of luck to him in his near-term retirement.

_______

BL: Not at all surpised that you support the NCSU admins. I totally agree re: Chanc Randy.

I'm not as convinced on DY yet but she is "ballsy" in her moves. Certainly mucho better than our Dickie The Putz by A LOT!

If TO'B had been "more personable" it might have served him better with the loonies when push came to shove. But loonies are loonies are loonies. The Russell Decision was a crapshoot that left a wound that never healed.

Since Gary Williams retired I had forgotten Maryland was still in the ACC.

I am a fan of TO, not because I believe he is a great coach or has a warming personality but because he is part of what is right about college sports. He says what he means and means what he says but does not do so in a way that insults people. He is not political and answers every question in a direct manner with honesty; he does not avoid the difficult ones. He has old school, military type standards and seems to expect the same from his players and others associated with his program. The university will have traded away the programs respectability and while they may be successful in luring a coach that will be more successful with wins & losses, will they be selling their soul to the devil as we did with Butch?

I am sorry to see TOB go. He was a good guy and (IMHO) a heck of a coach. It's a shame that the reality in the ACC is that you can beat the best team (FSU), your biggest rival 5 out of 6 years (UNC), and go to a bowl game year after year and *still* get fired. Sometimes you just have to accept who you are and be happy with it. Then again, such acceptance is a sign of maturity, and I would hate to accuse most ADs of *that*.

I quickly made a comment that NCSU AND UNC will never win a National Championship in their lifetime or mine......heck, we haven't even won an ACC Championship since 1980 and they haven't since 1979....a National Championship?....I told them that State's Agriculture Dept. would probably come up with a way to eradicate all the algae in the Chown River, before that would happen....

Rules of the game independent of the fan base similar to your statement about judging yours by the best and the others by their worst
the 2nd string QB or the just committed QB recruit is the best QB on the team
The offense or defense being used by the team beating us is the offense or defense we should be using.
The next coach will get us to the next level

Thx are due to Coach O'Brien for bringing discipline and character to the program after a 6 year absence; unfortunately, those traits did not also bring more wins, more consistency, more excitement and more ticket sales at a time of change in the sports entertainment business.
