A Terrific Triangle Trifecta and......

A Terrific Triangle TriFecta and.....

.... Oct 7, ’12:
Was it THE GREATEST FOOTBALL SATURDAY in Triangle History?  Don’t know who keeps such records but it would be hard to imagine a better one.... AND you coulda seen all three in-person.  I opted for two of the three..... Recapping Week Six ..... and a Night of Fame attracts the famous.  Yet another memory for William Neal Reynolds Coliseum ......

Before Saturday there was a Friday and this past one was the formal induction ceremony for the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame.  It’s not “Sports Hall of Fame” but that’s how most will likely refer to it. It was yours truly’s privilege to be among the 800 or so attendees courtesy of THE Bob Kennel.

After a year or so of closed door meetings and suggestioning and unsolicited advice from the usual gaggle of goobers and well-meaning partisans..... a first-year “class” of ten individuals was decided upon.  Two certainties were certain:

  1. The first 4-5 of the first ten would be obvious.
  2. The remainder of inductees will be questioned relative to the order of induction.  Some of those questioning the good sense of the selection committee in the years to come will get really nasty and reflect poorly on the NC State fan base in general.

The above scenario would apply to any similar Hall of Fame.

I have had some involvement with Halls of Fame over the years.  These things rank just behind “putting mamma in a nursing home” as an effective way to divide a family.  In this case a fan family.

I thought their first ten inductees were just fine.  Who cares what I think about this?  Ya might be surprised.

I’ve attended some dreadful Halls of Fame ceremonies.  MOST such ceremonies are dreadful.  I call them “rubber chicken root canal surgeries”.  Three to four hours that seem like days of addled brain codgers babbling on incoherently to a room-full of equally addled brains all of which have their hearing aids tuned to different frequencies.  This one was MUCH better.  This one was very well done!

Whoever was in charge of this evening was either very good or just lucky.  They avoided all the usual tiger traps and black holes that usually plaque these things.  Heck, even the A/V stuff worked flawlessly.  How rare is THAT.  There was only one inductee speech permitted proving (1) there IS a God and (2) Jim Ritcher is a very impressive gentleman.

Jim gave a 7-minute thank you tribute to NC State and what the institution meant to each of the inductees.   I think Jim should hire-out to do that speech for other HoFs.

The heavy hors d’oeuvre reception was perfect for the occasion.  A variety of outstanding dishes perfect for stand-up eating.

The floor of Reynolds Coliseum was divided into the reception area and the mini-auditorium for the formal ceremony.  Again, well planned and executed.

My SaidWHATMedia pal AgentPierce was present and was spied plotting some devilement with his arch enemy – that ol’ rascal BELO.

The ceremony was “like a lady’s skirt – long enough to cover the subject / short enough to keep your interest”.

Chancellor Randy did make one snipy remark about "we are The Flagship" but no mention of The Wolfpack Way and no gushy tribute to The Putz.......  At the conclusion of the ceremony, guests were encouraged to return to the reception area for autographs from the famous personages present.  And THEN.....

As David Thompson, Ted Brown, Roman Gabriel, Ritcher, etc moved thru the crowd..... guess who was the first person to be asked for his autograph by a devoted fan? .... a certain roguish Internet Legend who has attended even fewer classes at NC State than Washburn, Shackleford, McLendon et al.  Yep - ME!  I've signed my share of autographs but "then & there" was very cool!

Apparently my sterling reputation as the Internet’s most acclaimed “tell like it is-er” had preceded me.... right there on the celebrated floor of The House That Ev Case Built on the night they honored their heroes.   Is that it?  Not quite.

A few minutes later the honcho of The Raleigh Sports Club approached me – “Are you BobLee of BobLeeSays?”  By now I was on full alert.  “Yes sir.”  “Would you be available to speak to our club?  We pay an honorarium.”  “Yes sir, I would be.”

Legendary sports scribe, and friend, A.J. Carr overheard this and just shook his head.  “You beat all, you know that.”  .... Is that it?  Not quite.

My very favorite UNC Brd of Governor guy had texted me he had played golf that afternoon with a State “mega-hottie”.  As we were preparing to leave, the Wolfpack version of Brookyn Decker floated across the room to say hi and, I guess, flirt with Kennel.  It was THE Kellie Harper dressed to the nines.  Hubba Hubba and Lordy Mercy.

I almost bailed on even going to this event.  Truly divine intervention determined otherwise.  It was a humdinger.   Thanks Bob!

What about The Terrific Triangle Trifecta?  Oh yeah......

Carolina whupped the Hokies like only top tier SEC teams used to do.   Has BeamerBall finally run its course.  That sound you hear is angry Hokie Clavins Exiting Sandman from the Beamer Bandwagon.  The Fighting Fedorians remain undefeated in Kenan!

The new/old white helmets were a MEGA HIT.  See my column on HUDDLE w/ THE HEELS.   Those new unis were soooo cool they actually made Gio about 2.62% faster.  I have already ordered Bubba to “keep’em’.   He said he would.

Next.... over at The Wally, CutcliffeBall slaughtered the Hoos.  All in all a miserable trip south for teams from The Old Dominion.  It’s mid-October and Duke has the best W-L record in the Triangle.  That woulda won ya a few bar bets.

THEN the day ended with Jimbo’s Noles apparently saving TOB’s JOB by rolling over like roadkill in The Carter.  N&O scribe Caulton ‘Toots’ Tudor had columned that the long knives were coming out for The Marine.  All of my sources said Toots was spending way too much time dumpster-diving on PackPride.    A humdinger of a comeback by The Carter homies before a screaming mob of reved-up rabid wuffs.

I was reminded why I no longer watch games from the stands.  Uncomfortable seating and nitwits standing up in front of you for no reason at all. I “get” everyone being jazzed in the final minutes but all game long.  Spare me Lord.

My “other team” the SEC’s hapless Mizzou Tigers actually lost to Vanderbilt.  I thought their agreement with the SEC guaranteed a W over the Commodores.  Check the fine print, Coach Pinkel.

Those cool white helmets..... Run Gio Run..... Duke’s juggernaut.... Cardiac Pack..... and “the autograph in Reynolds” AND Kellie Harper...... Life IS Good!

Was unable to attend the HOF event, but watched via DVR. Your review is spot on. Just when you thought the inductee videos and nostaglic tears could not be beat, the Ritcher speech took its place along side Valvano's Speech at Reynolds in 93. As a true lineman, he humbly admitted the only reason he was there was because Ted Brown was there too. He even survived a surprise blitz by Gabe being Gabe to remind everyone who was #1. Congrats to DYow's staff for a job well done. Will make call today on how to donate to Reynold's renovation project.

The coup de grace for the Wolfpack was the 2nd half vs the Noles. The Carter was loud when it needed to be in 4Q even without a video reminder from Amato about cheering only when we are on defense. TOB said we made a difference which is all I needed to know as I recovered Sunday with a very hoarse voice.

Saw one play of the VT game and knew they were in trouble. It was the 4th and short where GB goes untouched for 62 and 6. Logan was right on His radio show when he said VT is paying the price for some misses with recruits who are not making the grades.

____________

BL: Not sure Richter would allow that comparison w/ V Speech. That's sacreligious!

Yeah, I was afraid Gabe was going to go squirrely but he was fine.

A well-done event!

My first game to Kenan in 14 years, and we loved it! Paid face value for two tickets on the 50 about 25 rows up behind Tech, but it was worth every penny. I wish we could get the same for the NCSU game, but that would really be a miracle, so I guess we'll watch that one on tv.

One note, hubbie and I noticed some holding by the Techies -- more than three or four times -- that was NOT called, because it was done in front of the VT team and coaches where a referee would have a hard time seeing it (unless he was hiding on the VT bench or in the VT section). But the fans up here are all complaining about the refs not catching the Heels.

And, devilish me had to put on my Carolina blue shirt to go in Kroger at 8 a.m. Sunday to buy groceries I really didn't need. Of course I was showing off my blue and white to a very silent market manager who spends as much time crowing about VT everything on the floor as he does working the meat case (No, Kroger, it wasn't a Blacksburg store), which is why I switched to Food Lion across town.

BL: The saving grace for HokieNation is that the hated Hoos are even worse. Exit Sandman!

I will admit it I was almost terrified when news of a change in the Carolina helmet came out. My first thought went back to what Butch had done with those awful black jerseys and wondered here we go again. But yes the new white helmets look nice and seem like they should have been there all along. Like Carolina blue and white I suppose. Maybe it is because as you have said Fedora actually knows how many "Choos" in "Choo Choo".

BobnKC.... It certainly was an unusual weekend in the Triangle - more what one would expect in basketball season than football. But basketball season should be pretty interesting too now that State is back in the conversation after the long forced sabbatical.

I, too, was very impressed with the HOF ceremony watching it on ESPN3. Personally I have no objections to any of the initial inductees, although there are several others I hope so see inducted in the next year or two as well. Some Packers have suggested Marvin "Tweets" Austin for induction, but I don't think he meets the eligibility requirements. Did you get Kellie's autograph, Bob?

BTW isn't it normal that, when the Flagship is taking on water and in danger of sinking, the admiral moves his flag to another ship! :>)

Will Mizzo's move to the SEC help recruiting to the point that they move up from the bottom-feeder position in the coming years? Hope so. I've always liked Mizzo, even before I left NC for Show Me!

____________

BL: No autograph from Kelli. There was nowhere on her slinky ballgown she could carry a pen.

Mizzou has been harvesting recruits from Texas the past ten years. Don't know if that will continue. I fear not.

Great column, BL. First, hope that the Raleigh Sports Club has a one-month booking backlog as we are in the motorhome touring the south (deep south) and won't be back until the calendar flips over to NOV.

Second, could not work the HOF into our departure schedule....barely made the FSU Game(S). As to the GAME. I have my own personal top 5 WP games, and one of them is a loss. It was in 1979 with a little blonde 9 YO kid. We watched the longest field goal in PSU history defeat our WP. Sat night made up for it. Had another little blonde 9 YO there as my DW decided she had to pack and he would enjoy it. That was the understatement of the year. He was a little fired during the first half as he had played a MM FB game that day. BUT, he was jumping up and down like a Mexican jumping bean on top of an Obama LIAR METER. That was really a special moment for this old granddad. He had made a poster and we will take his ticket, cup and poster and add it to our WP shrine area. The concessions stands sold out of everything that had FSU on it.

As to the HOF, they were there at the game, but gimpy Gabe did not make it. Really neat. I did some reading about Ritcher. Anybody that can play FB in the pros (wearing a GOOD helmet on the line) and still qualify for an AA Captain's seat had to have an extra dose of brain layers. Good guys do well, no matter what. WRAL really botched the first newscast. The blondes said that Jimmy V won the FIRST championship and that Kay Yow's DAUGHTER accepted the award for her. Sort of like saying that Deano was the first UNC coach to endorse Romney. Obviously the copy writer and the ladies ain't from around these here parts.

Have fun in Raleigh.....keep the UNC situation properly stirred....let it simmer for a while, then poke the bottom of the pot to see what crawls up....

Finally, one final comment....I was very happy that Coach Roy Williams' biopsies were BOTH Negative. The similarities between his first diagnosis and Renal Carcinoma were FAR too close. Wish him the best..

BTW....KELLY (not Kelli but if she looked as good as you intimated, I guess you had a mental flash back to the Huba Hubba TamI). And YES, she is a very attractive young lady that looks good in jeans and church attire....but she had 6" heels on also.

___________

BL: She was statuesque for sure!

Why is TOB's job always "on the line"?

_________

BL: Thats a bit of double entendre as his annual loss of O-linemen to injuries usually dooms him to good but not great results. His annual detractors are fire-throated Clavins. ... TOB's history is of good but never quite great teams.

Well,,dayum.. We've only met one time BL, but I'm so sorry I missed you at the HOF. I spoke to both Bob an Kelli but you must have been elsewhere. I too have been to many other HOF events and was preparing for a drag, but it was outstanding. Us Wuffies have got above our raising. Hey, did you notice, we even air conditioned Reynolds for the event. Nuf said about the Semiholes.. can't get the grin off my face...

Oh yeah, the selections to the HOF were all good except for one ommission... Norm Sloan. OK, who would I replace of the 10 who were inducted? I don't know.

____________

BL: A selection rule was "no more than three coaches" - Case, V, Kay - hard to argue those. Sloan gets in next year.

BobLee,... Tried to post this to your latest column today and couldn’t seem to get it to work. Here it is.

Sorry I missed you at both the HOF and the game - my wife was late getting in from Winston Friday night and we barely made the ceremony. I thought it was fantastic - very well-done and attendee-friendly. Can't wait until next year.

I was in Chancellor Randy's box and ran into our friend the future first gentleman of Cary - after his wife gets elected to the Senate! As your professed "very favorite UNC Brd of Governor guy", I know I am filling the spot formerly held by Brent, and I have big shoes to fill indeed.

The Pack made me proud Saturday night. One of the best games ever at the Carter. And the Dookies even looked pretty good.

I will admit to liking the white helmets in Chapel Hill - the all-white look is crisp and sharp. Football team looked pretty good, too. October 27 should be a doozy!

All the constituent members of the University of North Carolina system are excellent institutions in their own rights, but BobInKC may have a good point.

Better be careful with the Coach Harper talk - Blondie might start to get jealous (although I doubt she is too worried about the situation). Hope to see you soon, and keep up the good work.

____________

BL: AgentPierce about to launch a piece on the New Chancy search. Blondie not worried about Kellie. Now The Fabulous Comparato Twins.... Maybe!

The "t" comes before the "ch" in Jim's name. You may be thinking of another famous Pack baller named Richter.

Tell all these Miss Grammars to back off a little with the spelling stuff. Everyone knows wecengineering school folks don't do words well, and since you graduated .......... oh, never mind. You went to the other school. Get the spelling right, fer gudness sakes. :)

Any soiree that winds up with an introduction to Mizz Harper is a good 'un.

That was one wild football weekend! Dook, UNC, and State all whupping folks in football is a special event indeed. Much more hard to find than frog hair and less frequently seen than the northern lights at this latitude.

My voice is back but my hearing may have suffered permanent damage after Saturday night. With Saturday's event, I have witnessed the downfall of the 'Noles three times in Carter-Finley, '98, '10, and '12. When you add in the Penn State win in '74, that's a lot of fun for a school that bumbles and stumbles about looking for a football identity. Watching the mighty fall brings a certain amount of pleasure, even if it "just cost the ACC several millions of dollars" as one spittlespewer posted.

Whew ! I wonder what would have been written about the HOF Induction if it had not gone so well or the Cheese(y) Grits and Tomato Pie had not been found, or K. Harper had not walked up.
Jim Ritcher is pure class. His speech wove the mantle of "greatness" around all the inductees beyond their athletic endeavors and made the whole evening a "together" event for which all of North Carolina could be proud.
Greatness can not be demanded by others or sought out by self. You just know it when you see it.
Now we know why you disappeared at the football game while just going to the bathroom. Thought Agent Pierce had reappeared and found the Cabal at the Carter.
All in all, a great weekend for anyone who loves sports, North Carolina, an exciting finish, and strange friendships. (Go Pack !)

___________

BL: The part where Kelli tickled you under your chin was a special moment.

The Truth will always be written whatever it may be.
