Move Over Choo Choo!

BobLeeSays:  Oct 27, ’12
Outlined against a blue-gray October sky.... a courageous young stallion (in a chrome helmet) galloped into history amid Kenan’s lofty pines.

.... against a blue-gray October sky...” is the opening to Grantland Rice’s epic column on October 18, 1924 introducing Notre Dame’s Four Horsemen.  CNR and Bubba and maybe The Real Bob Kennel know that.  If ol’ Grantland had been with me in The Choo Choo Lounge I think he’d asaid “BobLee, you can borrow it just this once.”

Many backstories and sub texts that you don’t know, but you will learn in the next 10 minutes.

Upon Heaven’s gridiron graze a special breed of stallions.  As swift afoot as Mercury.  As strong as Hercules.  As brave as the bravest heroes of history, myth and lore who ever faced Defeat square in the eye..... and Defeat blinked.

Their names are as colorful as their deeds are heroic.  Red Grange – The Gallopin’ Ghost..... Doak Walker..... Charlie Trippi..... “Bullet Bill” Dudley..... Herschel..... "Juice"..... Bo..... #23 From Garden City.... Mr Inside & Mr Outside..... and Carolina’s own #22 Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice.  At around 4:10 PM EDT on Saturday last, a quick vote was held among these vaunted stallions.  Choo Choo was chosen to deliver the news.....

#26 Giovanni Bernard, step upon the pedestal.
Young fella you have earned your place in the panteon of heroes.

Who knows what the future holds for “Gio”.  Like all great stallions – Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Whirlaway, Gallant Man, Seabiscuit, and Gio every run could be their last.  Their longevity is at the mercy of the gods who control the destiny of such marvelous creations.  But for certain sure..... Saturday, October 27, 2012 and Gio Bernard are forever etched in the annals of Carolina sports lore.

Does this rise to the level of Walter Davis and “8 down with 17 seconds to play” in 1974?   HELL YES!  No doubt about it.  Move over Walter.  Move over Choo Choo.  Make room for Gio.

547,000 Carolina fans (at least) filled Kenan Stadium under that “blue-gray October sky”.   They will all have ticket stubs to prove it too!

Did a single son or daughter of The Old Well leave early ?

Was a single dissenting sound "harked” ?

Did every Tru Blue know: “So long as there’s a second on the clock and we have Gio..... there’s hope springing eternal within every Tar Heel breast.” ??

Maybe I’m getting a tad too high on happy now.   A dawber or two had indeed gotten down.  One or two had prior engagements around 3:30.

As my Good Sports co-host Br’er Chansky and I strolled into Kenan around 12:10 we placed a friendly wager on what unis The Fedorians would sport.  I bet it would be good guys in “all white with those awesome white helmet” and bad guys all in “blood-red”.   Neither of us knew the true horror that the boss of The Fedorians had planned.

As you know, I watch each home game from Choo Choo’s Lounge on the South Concourse.   As the Fedorians came out of the tunnel I figured the color thingamajig on the HDTV had gone on the fritz.

“Ohhhh Noooo Larry, what the heel you gone and done?  This ain’t freakin’ Hattiesburg you hyped-up galoot.”  That is actually pretty much what I screamed at the screen.

I tried to figure out what the deal was with the stoopid chrome helmets with the stoopid blue-foot on the side.  Yours truly was NOT a happy old-school traditionalist.  I almost texted Bubba right then.   “The Real AD” must have sensed my anxiety.

The game starts..... Fedorians go nutzo outta the gate.  Gonna be a blow-out..... gonna score a 100.... at least!   I’m thinking “awwww crap.  Now these goofy helmets will be a permanent good luck charm”.  I’m conflicted.

Wuffs roar back.... roar.... roar.  Uh oh. LARRY, CHANGE THE HELMETS BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE! ..... end of the first quarter and Bubba The Real AD comes in to see me.  Bubba’s grinning like a Cheshire cat.

“You don’t like the helmets. I bet”..... “YA THINK” I replied.

Bubba patiently explained the whole story behind the stoopid chrome helmets with the cartoon foot and my blood pressure descended to a normal range.  It was some screwy deal with Learfield.   (NOTE: To All ABCers and Dan Kane:  Zero taxpayer dollars were used for the chrome helmets.)

Second quarter becomes a Friday The 13th movie with Tar Heels as the nubile teenagers at Crystal Lake.   The Wuffs all wore hockey masks and carried machetes.  Nubile teenagers at summer camp are not very good at pressuring QBs named Mike.

The Band of Brothers poured into the CC Lounge at halftime.  Yes, some discouraging sounds were being harked by six decades of former FB Lettermen.  More than a few.   There were four former QBs on hand this day – Talbot, Bomar, Stankavage and a young fella named Yates.

I quickly rounded up some former D-linemen ..... Battle Wall, Mike Horvat, Brent Milgrom Little Ricky Packard and even Ev Cowan (who was an OffGuard but I was desperate) and I arranged for them to replace the current D-line for the 2nd Half.  I bet you wondered about that, huh!

The Fabulous Comparato Twins (aka Official CC Lounge mascotettes) were on-hand and gave my Old New D-Line a peppy “go get’em” speech.   Nicole was wearing a pink off-shoulder UNC t-shirt.  Whatever she told’em musta worked, huh?

The rest is a historical anomaly that will live forever in one form or another in the cul-de-sacs and around water coolers within 100 miles of The Old Well.

Thruout the afternoon, I was exchanging emotional texts with “my favorite BOG guy”.  Details of that e-conservation are hermetically sealed until such time as no living soul on earth can correctly spell "Nyang’oro".  For the record, only four living souls CAN correctly spell Nyang'oro - Julius, me, Deborah Crowder and Serge Zwikker (??).

>><<

I can’t wrap this up without sneaking a peek over at The Brickyard.  I avoid their really scary sites where their really really scary cockroachs swarm and gnaw off each other appendages, but I did check around a bit.....

NOTE: The mainstream ADULT wing of WuffWorld, while disappointed, are rational and reasonable as is their custom.  But the cross-eyed crowd is where we always go for giggles and grins.

To no surprise at all...... Referee Ron Cherry’s mutha came in for some criticism.  Ron, his mamma and whatever horse they rode in on came in for some harsh words by dour Lupiners.   I didn’t actually hear any harsh words for John Swofford but ya jest know his name had to come up for blame.   It’s a rule following any State defeat in anything.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has declared an Epidemic Alert for Paranoid Hysteria in portions of Wake & Johnston Counties thru next Saturday.

One nitwit BLAMED DAN KANE & THE N&O saying Dan had not completely destroyed UNC and shoulda been tailing Gio 24/7 the past twenty years.  Something about a fingerpainting Gio turned in in the 2nd grade.  Wuffie bottom-feeders are a special breed indeed.

There is already a youtube circulating thru WuffWorld "clearly" showing a squad of Swofford Ninjas driving SUVs with tinted windows forming a picket line for Gio on that punt return.  Using 50 calibres, the Ninjas actually SHOT nine Wuff tacklers IN THE BACK and ran over'em.  And Ron The Referee didn't see a one of'em.  For your copy go to TA'sKnee.com .....  The videographer was Abraham Zapruder's grandson Guido Zapruder.  Who knew there was a grassy knoll built into The Blue Zone??

TO’B is not being hailed as THE greatest coach in NC State history right now.  His strategic decisions in those final fatal minutes will be analyzed A LOT.  Both by beady-eyed Wuff goobers and even by some mature adult Wuffs.   A FrauYowCallJonGruden.com website went up at 5:27 PM EDT.

Did today’s HUGE UNC W prove that - Rick Dees is a better human being that General Hugh Shelton?  That goes back to THE STOOPIDEST remark ever made by a Wuffie about nine years ago.  No..... General Shelton is still a very fine General and human being and Rick Dees is still a fine disc jockey.

Does today’s UNC W wipe out all the Great Unpleasantness?  No, of course not.  It dulls its sting for a few days but reality awaits that resolution.

Is NC State University still as fine an institution now as it was at 12:30 PM Saturday?  As far as I know, yes it is.

It was a humdinger of a football game that Carolina won.  It does not insure either Mitt nor whatshisname a victory on Nov 6.

Yes, it is true that Larry Fedora has NEVER lost to TO’B and at this rate he never will.  Were you watching Butch?

I have cultivated an image as non-plussed and unflappable as regards dumb ol’ sports events.   I confess that in those final two minutes I, BobLee, was both plussing and flapping.

It was lotsa fun and quite exciting.  "Real life" beckons us back to upcoming events of far greater magnitude.

Bobby, sorry I'm late to the party, but life has intervened in the interim, and I hadn't thought about football for a couple of days.

Congrats to UNC team and fans on a great win. I too saw a spike in the "Fire TOB" traffic on even the non-crazy sites (I don't visit PP or IC either), but it's mostly coming from the same people who have been saying "Fire TOB" for a long time.

Although I question some decisions made in the game, I'm happy to have him for as long as he'll stay. And there are a LOT of fellow fans who think the same. We're just not as, um, strident as some of the others...

Enjoy the remaining games with Gio - I suspect he is NFL-bound after this year. Always nice to have an opportunity to appreciate someone's talents before they are really famous...

Have to agree about the unis. Was visiting family during the game, so caught it in bits and pieces, but when I saw the uni's I wondered if I'd tuned in the wrong game. My God, those helmets were ugly. And after Saturday's results, you're cursed - you will see them again, you know.

The punt return run was spectacular. Yes, I can point out the illegal blocks as well, but I can also point them out on every other kickoff and punt return for the game for either team. Any coach (or fan, for that matter) worth his salt knows that you watch what's called and what's not, and you work with it, and try to work it to your advantage. Blaming the refs is a copout. UNC won by keeping the petal to the metal, and because they had Gio on the field that day.

___________

BL: The adults DO outweigh the goggle-eyed goobers in WuffNation as they do in most fan bases. ... as for the yucky helmets - Bubba promised me - one and done!

Great win by UNC. Felt it was their bowl and they would be fired up. NCS had several chances to lock it up but failed once more. Place would have been empty of Heel fans if we catch half dropped balls. Their secondary couldn't stop me. Oh well, it's a great rivalry but still just a game.Carry on.Your cat was nice looker.

________

BL: I still catch little Annabelle out of the corner of my eye on occasion.... sigh.

As I have said to others - my sense of self worth has not be altered by Gio's heroics. I hope that holds true for all others too.

Things you have to remember about Choo Choo:
1. He not only ran, but also did almost all of the passing. And was good at both.
2. He was one of the nation's leading punters.
3. He played defensive back - safety, I think.
4. He was in for almost all punt returns and kick off returns.

__________

BL: And he only played against white guys. And the average weight of the starting O-line was +- 200 lbs. ... Comparing eras is the ultimate game of solitaire with a deck of 51. Play all night and no one ever wins.

Should have given the game ball to Butch again. Didn't he recruit Gio?
You really did not look at Pack Pride sports did you? There were almost no conspiracy, blame the refs etc. comments. Longish fire the coach thread though:-)
Congrats on your 'bowl game' win. Entertaining game, the unfortunate ending notwithstanding.

____________

BL: I haven't been to either PackPride or InsideCarolina in 6-7 years and no intent to do so. I do observe "the species" in other forums however.

The Ron Cherry and TO'B stuff was easy to predict.

It was a VERY exciting game but my feelings of self-worth are relatively unchanged... as they were during 0-5 too.

I lost my voice screaming at the TV with that run. My daughter came downstairs to see what the deal was. It ranks there with Walter Davis in 1974 as an outstanding event for me. It was not like the game was a loss since it was tied, but to come away with a victory in that fashion is the best.

__________

BL: Yes, I put in up beside Walter's shot for sure. Gio's runs in the last drive were also legendary. He was not going to be denied.

I was sitting upright in bed in my little hovel (Not the Choo Choo Lounge with the Fabulous Comparato Twins) about 3AM Thai time nervously listening to Gary and Johnny, and Tony and pleading for the Marine to kick it away from Gio.......But alas.....Great game, but I tell ya being a State fan is never easy--always been that way, but I don't think I would have it any other way--so much fun following them even with the unusual and untimely ways they seem to win and lose......Both Carolina and State were remarkable Saturday afternoon under grey skies at Kenan......And you are as much a Grantland Rice as Gio is a Choo Choo .....Wonderful writing and such magnanimous comments by your readers....... Second guessing is part of the fun, but I'll take Tom O'Brien any day......The most disappointing State loss (overall) I remember was not this one, nor the TA lunge ate the goal line, but goes back to the "Cool Coyotes" ("58" and "68", CNR and others will likely concur) on a grey overcast day at State College, Pennsylvania......I watched the final moments on a closed-circuit black and white theatre screen in a packed Reynolds Coliseum and on fourth and a foot was pleading for Earl (Edwards) to give it to Bobby Hall.....But alas, Jim Donnan called the play that everybody in Western Pennsylvania was waiting for-- Barchuk up the gut......All American LB Dennis Oncotz met Tony at the hand-off and the rest is history.......The '"White Shoes", 8-0 at the time and Number 3 in the Nation, missed a golden opportunity that no State team has ever had--a chance to be Number 1--That same weekend Number 1 lost and Number 2 tied......The Penn State loss hurt for a while, but once exited from the coliseum my friends and I headed over for hamburgers and chocolate shakes and replayed the game as we still do today when we get together at holidays--that too was/is a lot of fun...... What a story book ending for Carolina--There will likely be little Carolina Blue "Gio Gio"sweatshirts made like the Choo Choo sweatshirts of old for the little boys and girls of proud Tar Heel fans......I listen to Art and You prior to the games...... Art Chantsky picked it--"Carolina will win if they score more than 40"--Nice call......Tonight I will head down Walking Street to see if the two beautiful Chiang Mai twins in pink tee-shirts are waiting tables at the Same Same Bar....To shake a little angst.....

I once played with Danny Talbert in a barnstorming basketball game at Goldsboro High School against the ECU all stars. That team of mine included Vann Williford, Rick Anheuser, ***** Braucher, and Fred Lind.....Danny is a great guy and maybe the greatest all-around athlete in UNC history.....Well, the election is coming and I just faxed in my vote.....Likely a storybook ending for both of us this time.....Hopefully....:-)

__________

BL: It was an amazing roller coaster of an afternoon. More ups and downs than a room full of pogo sticks.... with a classic ending.

Now its a memory and reality beckons for those who choose to dwell in "reality".

I can't imagine Frau Yow is beating up TO'B despite the usual post-loss onslaught from the usual corners of WuffWorld.

With 6 Ws, UNC is now OFFICIALLY Bowl Ineligible for this season. This one was our Christmas In Shreveport.

We'll never hear the end of Ron Cherry etc. Some of it's deserved, some of it is like the fans behind me saying he'd just been waiting to get his face on TV on our second drive when the call was obvious false start. Both sides had room for complaint. My understanding re the block in the back calls is that if you're engaged with the defender before he turns, it's OK, which appeared to be the case. Not sure the actual rules have much to do with the complaints in this case though.

__________

BL: I wonder if Jim Knight minds sharing his bullseye with Ron Cherry?

Marvelous column by a master wordsmith who knows his history. For this son of the University of Illinois, Notre Dame, Southern Cal,, Indiana University, and Regensburg, my heart is still racing from yesterday’s viewing. ESPN blew it again. Should have been in CH. Fortunately, I was able to catch the game on my IPad, ESPN3.

Completely ignored the IU-Illini game on the BiG Network, as well as the UK-Mizzou game.

Inciidentally, thank you for “suggesting” to my grown brood that they get me an updated HD TV when you were here. Great Christmas for Judy and me. The monster Samsung that now resides where my relic once stood, has it all. The thing has not only HD and 3D and is wireless but Pat and Rob set it up so I can get anything on it from my IPad, which gave me a huge view of the the thrilling game. I watched it again this afternoon. Wow!!!!!!!!!!

Both teams were winners. Many times I was prouder of my teams following a loss than after wins. Never was one of those who feel a lousily played win is better than an outstandingly played loss. Scheduled nuances. We would easily win the reverse and get blown out in the other. Still, 1 and 1. Hey, somebody wins and somebody loses. As you learned, I never blamed a loss on the officials, nor have my players or coaches. The other fellows want to win just as badly as we. Officiating calls are good or bad depending on the eye of the beholder. However, I never blame fans for being upset with officiating. I shows they care.

There are many great rivalry games which are not burnt into the psyche national by the likes of ESPN and the national networks; IU-Purdue, Utah-BYU, UK-Louisville, KU-Mizzou, and other neighborhood brawls. Those games mean just as much to the participants as do so many. Known nationally are Bama-Auburn, Ohio State-Michigan, OU-UT, and UT-A&M. Those are historically local and nasty brawls and would be if the teams were ranked from 95-120.

Farmer and elite schools will always be up there in dislike and rivalry. The one in North Carolina is as full of animus as any. No National Championship (Mythical) could ever be more exciting or mean as much to the participants or to those mentioned above.

Teasips firebombed the Aggie bonfire from the air. On the next pass, Aggies tried to shoot down the Teasip bombers. Did not bring down the UT Air Force plane but put many holes in the fuselage, wings, and tail assemblage, causing a forced landing in a field on the way home to Austin. More damage happened to the trees at Toomer’s Corner than to the plane.

BL, a great beginning of the holy members of the Pantheon of Football you describe. There are a few more who certainly belong with them. If Trippi and Herschel are there, then Frankie Sinkwich (“The Greatest Bulldog of them All”) certainly met them.

If the Ghost is there, then he was met and welcomed by Walter Eckersall, Willie Heston, and “Chic” Harley. He joined them in welcoming Bronko Nagurski, Tommy Harmon, Alan Ameche and Howard “Hopalong” Cassady.

If OJ is there, Morley Drury (“The Noblest Trojan of Them All”) greeted him, as did Ernie Nevers, Hugh McHelhenny, Joe Perry, and Ollie Matson.

A apecial place can be found among the columns for ***** Kazmaier, Ernie Davis, Harry Agganis, Byron “Whizzer” White, Jay Berwanger, Cllyde “Smackover” Scott, and Nile Kinnick.

Who will greet Gio? How about a Dukie? That would be one of the greatest backs to don a helmet, prep, college, or pro, George McAfee, especially after the kick-off return, of which George was a master.

Carolina should have its own bowl in Charlotte. Some cities have two. Let us have another game between State and UNC. Half Red, half Blue. Shoot, I’ll buy eight tickets for the guys who watched the game at my place yesterday.

___________

BL: I KNEW you would come up with oodles of great RBs that I omitted. :-)

Hard to believe it was almost a year ago that I enjoyed your wonderful hospitality and "suggested" that "Coach & Judy need a big TV". I am so glad it has brought you so much pleasure. :-)

Coach, it was most definitely A HUMDINGER that came down to a hero being heroic.

The adults in both camps are resuming their "real lives" while the cross-eyed goobers are, well, being cross-eyed goobers. Lots of raging loonies in Raleigh calling for The Marine's head on a platter. This ain't TO'B's first rodeo so I believe he will persevere.

But THOSE UNIS !!! Yuck and Ptui. Bubba promised me a quick return to normalcy and I'm holding him to it.

Though the subject is truly distasteful, one of the best BobLee blogs ever. But darn, it is distasteful. I was down in the corner where all State tickets are made available, and my Droid radio could not tell me what the Bluesy twins were saying on 97.9 nor hear the calm Hahn tell me on 101.5.
However, I did actually see eight dropped passes, an amazing Gio, several blatant holds on the Tar Heels' last legitimate drive, and two blocks in the back on the lamented return. I also had to try and quell several woofy riots on the decision making in the last 2 minutes.
My Dad took me to Kenan Stadium when I was 9 years old to see Choo Choo play Wake Forest. I vividly remember him returning a punt with four Deacons hitting him simultaneously and Choo Choo popping out the other side heading for a touchdown.
Yesterday was a good game depite the outcome, and there will be many more including basketball. Go Pack !

__________

BL: Is Guido Zapruder offering a video box set of TA's knee and Gio's punt return? Does it include Dudley Steals The Ball from Clyde?

The myths and legends just grow and grow. "Good guys" and "bad guys" always depend upon the lens thru which one is peering.

When Duke's Henderson mugged Hansbrough, we had a video showing the tire iron AND the ball peen hammer he used to do the deed. :-)

This is but the calm before the storm. Enjoy the gift from The Marine. Punting to Gio has got to be the biggest brain dead decision ever made in the series. Enjoy the win. Dark clouds and cold winds of the NCAA are in the forecast.

Please let the record show that I did predict a favorable draw in the Ref schedule and that Ref Ron (Giv'n him the business...." Cherry would be in the crew. I actually said it would be Jim Knight with a bunch of Ron Cherry clones and with KH autographed, initialed signature shoes.

Had to listen to the game via XM as the local TV stations in Gulf Shores and Pensacola don't care about running the ACC games....no matter HOW early. They don't even recognize FSU.

However, I WILL say one pleasant thing about the game. Jones Angel and company are a much more pleasant listen than the old Crudemugeon. They at least see some *****s in the armor of the blue (Dark with Chrome....now THAT must have been a hoot). It was a bit partisan, but in the middle when old Mo went over for a lap dance on the State side, they were lamenting about how the 5 minutes of early emotion had been totally exhausted and the UNC lads were not up to a comeback task.
In all fairness, the Ref's did NOT cause the receivers to drop the passses. We coughed up the tater 3 times and UNC twice. The old adage of who loses the piggy LEAST will prevail is true again.
The folks on the State Boards are aghast....talk of illegal blocks, sticky stuff on gloves (San Diego Goo), and other inappropriate interpretations of the rules are being cataloged and there is, I understand, a petition, to get signatures to show AD Yow WHY we need to be in the SEC.
SO, pretty much what one would expect. I guess the footage of spraying the bell and caddy DARK BLUE last week and the Countdown Clock was the difference.
Again, in all seriousness, Gio Bernard was the real McCoy and was a game changer. My RED had is off to him. My RED hat is also off to Fedora on the gutsy 2 point conversion. Had it went awry, then a the Barth kid's (tell me does does NOT have any more siblings...Male or Female) would not have seen action on the last drive.
So....I guess we really are saying....Wait until BB season...
Enjoy my friend and celebrate responsibly...
