"....a surprisingly good school."

“.... a surprisingly good school” ???

...... Oct 15, ’12:
At a dinner party recently, I engaged a UNC PhD candidate who noted, with noticeable surprise, that "NC State has a surprisingly good engineering program”.  Duh! Really !!  I did not further inquire as to his opinion on the future of mankind or his favorite Bond Girl.   It did cause me to ruminate upon “what makes ‘a good school’” and “says who?”..... and Week Seven in review.

I had never met this young (26-28-ish) man before nor do I even recall his name.  He is in the final year of his PhD in Chemistry program at UNC (the Chapel Hill branch).   He did his undergrad at a small expensive school in the Triad.  He was very polite and relatively well-groomed.   I have no doubt he can quote the Periodic Table backwards in pig latin, knows a precipitate from a reagent and can turn on a bunsen burner with either hand.

He did not know who I was.  My awareness marketing campaign among PhD in Chemistry-types has been only moderately successful.

Earlier I had overheard him noting he had not yet decided upon his choice for President in next month’s election.  That shoulda prepared me for the “pretty good school” comment.  I understand why some people support Obama.  Obviously I understand why people support Romney.  I understand why some “dislike all politicians blah blah...” but the “haven’t decided yets” flummox me.  I digress.

He had recently attended some sort of job fair sponsored by the NCSU Engineering School.  He would like to apply his extensive Chemistry schooling in some engineering-related way that made my teeth ache.  That’s another way of saying he can’t find a job in Chemistry.  Next week he might attend a tele-marketing job fair at Wake Tech.  Does Wake Tech have “a pretty good tele-marketing school”?

Maybe it was his first visit to the NC State campus and he was shocked that it wasn’t in a soybean field outside Spivey’s Corner.  Maybe he thought NC State “engineers” drove choo-choo trains.  Maybe he has consumed way too much Hate State Kool-Aid in his quarter century of life.

He pontificated on the state of big time athletics at UNC et al but I was taken by his faux-erudite opines about NC State.   I’m sure I could find equally faux-erudite opines by brain-washed Wufflings as relates to UNC-CH programs of study.  As veteran BLSays loyalists well know ....... “ALL UNC / NCSUers are ‘a buncha ______” and that goes for their school curricula and the horses they rode in on too.   YIKES!

Our Kid chose The University of Missouri because (1) she wanted to really “go away to college” and (2) she had met some nice Mizzou students at a summer camp she attended while in high school.  We have family relatively close by and both Blondie and I were very familiar with the school, campus and community.  But Kid just liked the kids she had met at summer camp.

It worked out incredibly well for all concerned.  She attended three sports events in four years and left all three before they were over.  She LOVED her four years there regardless.  Go figure.

Like 93.8% of incoming college freshmen, Kid had no clue what she wanted to do of an occupational nature.  98% of that remaining 6.2% say they want to be “something pretentious that makes a lot of $$$$ and doesn’t involve a mean boss”.

I probably need to re-post my classic column about “I shoulda checked Forest Ranger” – the penultimate treatise on why the masses of men (and women) lead lives of occupational misery.

I view “going to college” as a 4-year gauntlet to traverse twixt naïve adolescence and naïve young adulthood.  You win IF you manage to learn that (1) underwear does not wash itself ..... (2) sheets don’t change themselves..... and (3) all those yucky things your mom and dad warned you about really are “out there” and really are yucky.

You can traverse that gauntlet at any number of academic institutions all of whom have pretty brochures..... tantalizing websites..... some semi-famous alumni.... and promise they are NOT “dens of iniquity with evil lurking ‘round every corner”.

If you emerge after four or so years confident of what you want to “be”, you only have another twenty or so years to learn yourself well enough to “be” something else that actually fits “you”..... sort of.

What will our Chemistry PhD end up doing?  He was polite and well-groomed so he may overcome his “waaaaay too much education” or maybe move to China and get a job wearing a lab coat and swishing stuff around in a beaker.   Maybe he gets a job delivering pizzas to Engineering PhD candidates at State.

Speaking of “getting a job”..... Have you seen The Butcher’s latest infomercial?  Yes, Drew’s daddy filmed an infomercial with local sports guy WRAL’s Jeff Gravely.

It was supposed to be a for-real in-depth interview..... but it turned into one of those faux-things you see on obscure cable channels after midnight.  You know the ones promoting trial lawyers or “get rich quick” schemes or “that certain part of the male anatomy”.

Jeff didn’t simply lob Butcher softballs.  Jeff set’em on a tee for Butcher to swing away at.   It made Obama being “grilled” by Wolf Blitzer seem penetrating by comparison.

You’ll be surprised to know that Butcher is still purer than Mother Teresa’s lingerie drawer.  He has still never jaywalked nor even thought about tearing that label off his mattress.   He still can’t fathom how John Blake managed to fool him..... for 25 years.

All this lacked was an 800 # to contribute to the Redeem Poor Poor Butch fund.  It’s comforting to know that some things never change.

Week Seven:   Not a good week to be Mack Brown’s neighbor.  The eggs and epithets are going to be prolific around Austin for sure. ...... No sofas burning in Morgantown as the “Neers got lambasted in Lubbock. ....... Mike The Tiger took a bite out of a certain visor down on the bayou. ...... Mizzou received yet another Welcome To The SEC kick-in-the-teeth from St Nick. ............... and before 50,000 empty seats at Name De Jour Stadium outside Miami, Gio Bernard established himself as the greatest export from Florida since grapefruit.

Is Russell Wilson the Greatest Wisconsin QB in NFL History ??? ..... Hey, I gotta do something to piss off Wuff Clavins!

BobLee’s latest Huddle W/ The Heels column exposes THE LATEST conspiracy at The Flagship..... READ MORE - CLICK ..... and I’m sure you will!

On a related note, did you see the sad news that our friend Steve Ford is retiring from the N&O? Rumor has it that he is going to be the PR guy to rehabilitate the public personae of John Edwards

___________

BL: Yes, AgentPierce had a few choice words for "Wiffenpoof". Ford had become an SNL parody of himself ten years ago. He will be replaced by an intern.

I imagine the whiz kids epiphany happend when he talked with the recruiters at the job fair who were not impressed with his pedigree compared to the many engineering grads he did not realize he was competing against. Considering he was crashing the job fair like it was a frat party, he should have already realized he was a stranger in a strange land a la Leon Russell.

__________

BL: I think he was blown away that there were no tractors in the parking lot. This kid had all the stereotypes memorized.

The wiz kid could have gone to a community college, majored in chem. and could have found a job quicker. In my opinion the CC route makes more sense although it does not have the campus and social factors involvled..

___________

BL: I'm a HUGE CommColl fan. But, yes, it does lack the "go away to school" elements of "growing up" which I value as much as classroom experience.

Just to let you know we are growing more milo (sorghum for the advanced degrees out there) these days down at the corner where the World Hoolerin Contest is held

The question of what makes a good school reminds me of the blind men describing an elephant. Perception is a lot of it according to US News and World Report. For some, a good school is one that the undergraduate programs prepare students for med school, law school etc.. I know that many look at college as a glorified trade school and judge by whether the grads are placed. Bad schools are ones that the grads have a low passing rate on board tests. Grant money is the gauge some use. But good research being done is not the same as good teaching being done.
There is a pretty good essay by A.N. Whitehead, The Aims of Education that makes some great points on what education should generally accomplish to improve society.
I like infomercial to describe Gravely's hard nosed interview with Butch. He should have finished with...You could spend $8 million to get a coach like this but for the next hour, you can get Butch ( we can't call him coach until the buyout money condition is met) for the low low price of $2 million and if you call now we will send you John Blake absolutely free.

________

BL: What was WRAL trying to do w/ that silliness ???

Interesting column, BL. Having a BS from NCSU & comparing my career, lifestyle and overall success to two HS classmates who graduated from UNC, I think my choice was the most advantageous.
I, too, sent two children to college and both got post graduate degrees- one an MA & one JD. Never borrowed any money for that.
Today we travel in a nice motorhome and have no financial worries.
So, an NCSU BS has been lucrative for me and also for society as I was able to assemble successful environmental and safety teams on. Worldwide basis and accomplished many things. Less pollution and longer, uninjured lives.
Wish the young lad well
My two Chem Eng NCSU Grad nephews easily found jobs locally and did not have to go to the oil fields.
Ratings are an elusive thing
That is the only reason that I can see for the Butch tell NOTHING interview.

_____________

BL: To my young PhD's credit, he did think State's program was "pretty good". I think the fact the profs wore shoes impressed him.

Rival stereotypes are a nasty game.

Re: Mack "he lied to dem boys" Brown

The scuttlebutt in South Texas is that he will soon be asked to resign, probably after January 1 when his buyout clause goes from $3 million to $2.2 million. A column in yesterday's San Antonio paper noted that Mack is the oldest FB coach in Texas history, his record the last three years is worse than some coaches that UT has fired, and he has a string of nine straight losses against Top 25 opponents. The column also said that a National Championship would probably prevent him from being fired outright. Meanwhile, Larry Coker is coaching at UT-San Antonio after he was fired by Miami after winning a NC there. Go figure...

BL: He shoulda cashed in his chips when Colt graduated. Knowing when to adios is a very rare talent.

Surprisingly there are quite a few good schools out there, one of which is the school of hard knocks, which I find not nearly enough of them that's in charge at a lot of those schools have attended enough of. Bobby, when it comes right down to it MY generation blew it (those that wuz post adolescence and pre actual maturity in the late 60s and early 70s). I blame the easy access to mind altering substances (hey I gotta blame something, it's not my peers fault). We screwed the pooch and now it has come back to haunt us. 40 years ago Butchie woulda been run out of town with Bill Friday and company kicking his keister with every step. We would not have accepted 4 TRILLION with a great big T of debt. One of my all time favorite sayings by a politician was the later Senator Everitt Dirksen "A million here, a million there and pretty soon we're talking real money". Well replace the M with a B. For some reason we now accept mediocrity and lack of personal responsibility (4 people dead and one was our ambassador but we were not informed of the problem) without blinking an eye! I've had enough, the lord could take me at any time and I'd say "Thank you, I'd had enough".

I noticed during the infomercial that Butch mentioned having to get rid of 18 players "under the table" that he inherited. The implication being there were character issues involved. Given the characters he recruited I can't imagine what the 18 were like (in his mind). I bet the character issues were they were not fast enough or big enough. What does your friend John Bunting have to say about that?

Regarding the situation at Texas. I bet Mack is still safe but I would not be surprised if Manny Diaz is let go. I hate it for him because he is really a good guy.

Note: If you got this post before just delete one of them - my computer was acting up.

___________

BL: Yes, I heard that and about "$100 bills spread out on the bed.....". I have not heard of any comment John has made, if any.

Gravely even questioned that after the interview.

I would trust John over Butch ANY DAY!

I would not be surprised to see Mack hang it up. Any revival is going to take 2-4 years minimum. He doesn't need that frustration. Cash in and move to Linville Ridge.

Totally uneducated (but not wild) guess about the Butcher interview: Many preconditions were set before it was allowed to happen. 1: Make sure a sports guy does it, rather than one of our news people (like Cullen Browder or Binker, or heck, even Laura Leslie). 2: No tough questions. For all we know, BD provided them. 3: Imagine the ratings!

__________

BL: My opinion of WRAL is about on a par with my opinion of Butch even before this silly spectacle.

Actually, there is a lot of opportunity for chemists outside the universities. Only, they tend to involved working for corporations, and we know how bad that is.

Funny how different generations view college as well as different economic-social groups. If my dad had been wealthy, no doubt I would have gone to UNC and become a liberal arts major since that area of appeals to me after all is said and done at this period of my life. However, an opportunity I couldn't pass up afforded me the chance to go to State and study engineering which my mind told me I should do ,,,,,regardless of my heart. I could not afford to listen to my heart. So after four years in which I applied myself, I was able to graduate and found a job which served me well to provide quite a bit of career satisfaction and to provide for a family of three kids who all went to college without a single dollar borrowed.......we were fortunate I know. So it is with some annoyance that I look at today's generation of college age kids who seem all about finding themselves and expecting so much opportunity and leisure of choice to be given them.......for example, the annual spring vacation seems a given and no real thought as to why they are entitled to more of daddy's money just to blow it on silliness associated with the college life. Meanwhile, after such a self serving existence and attitude some spoiled nerd decides to offer his opinion on the school to which to I owe so much by declaring it "pretty good".......

__________

BL: He meant "pretty good" as a compliment... I think. Again, there are Wufflings equally as clueless.

The Success of Baby Boomers had its backlash on the current crop.

You made this guy up didn't you?

BL: I never make "these guys" up. They just walk up to me and say "write a column about me". So I do.

Given a choice I much prefer The Fabulous Comparato Twins.
