Stan Didn't Tweet

Oct 19,’13:  It’s mid-October and the St Louis Cardinals are still playing Baseball.  A mighty fine tradition in the middle of a seriously ill country doing it’s level best to stomp out and destroy anything and everything it’s citizens might rally ‘round and cheer for.

A lot more babies are being thrown out than bathwater as America races to get its national hand basket so deep in Hell it will never find its way back.   Our fateful descent did not start yesterday and it won’t stop tomorrow.   We blame Them and They blame Us and we all just keep on descending.......

Somewhere you just know there are a dozen pitiful souls who blame harmonicas for their own personal failures.   They will find a sleazy ACLU lawyer to take their case.  Before we know it that rendition of #6 playing Take Me Out To The Ballgame over the Busch Stadium PA will be banned.  Don’t laugh..... I give it five more years at most.

St Louis Cardinal Baseball is NOT the very last grand tradition not yet outlawed by the latest insane ideologue de jour’s vision of his personal utopia..... but the list of those still left gets shorter every day so enjoy it today.

There will only be two baseball teams still standing after this weekend.  One of those two teams wear “Birds On The Bats” on their chest.   Who will survive the next “cut” remains to be settled.  I can’t predict that outcome but I can predict that......

The plethora of sniping attacks on Cardinal Baseball and Cardinal Baseball Fans will continue to escalate.  Yes, you’ve seen it for several weeks now.... since the playoffs began.   It will get worse.

“It” is called The Tebow Effect and it is spread by ESPN and its ilk in the sports media and, of course, via Satan’s personal media – The Internet.   Find anything wholesome and positive in American society and throw garbage at it until it too is as fetid and soiled as it’s toxic self-loathing attackers.

As America’s Abject Hatred of Itself grows by self-inflicted wounds...... long-standing uplifting tradition like “being a Cardinal Baseball fan” are the primo targets of the venomous zombie mob.

Cardinal fans are being goaded into playing idiot roulette on the Internet.  A keyboard sicko spews out his personal hatred for mom, apple pie and Cardinal fans and it “goes viral”.    Cardinal fans see it and rush to retaliate...... citing all the goodness that “being a Cardinal fan” has meant to generations of their family.

They bravely enter “the toxic mosh pit” that is the Internet to defend their beloved regional rallying symbol – The Birds On The Bat.  That, alas, is a sucker’s bet.

All the generations of Cardinal loyalists from The GasHousers of Sportsman’s Park  to Matheny’s Kids in the latest version of Busch Stadium are outnumbered by the zombie army of witless goobers on the Internet.

Witless soulless goobers from every squalid hell-hole being systematically flushed down the economic toilet by crooked liberal politicians (can you say “Detroit” boys and girls?)  will vent their own city’s failures versus Cardinal fans.

If some innocent kid in Webster Grove proudly sporting his David Freese jersey dares to enter the cyber mosh pit to speak up for his heroes he will be disemboweled.  It's "the Internet Way".  Ask fans of Tim Tebow..... or “The Mannings”.

Ol’ BobLee is gonna clue you in on a little secret.   Those pathetic witless goobers are like stoopid trees falling in the deep woods.  If you don’t hear them..... they make no noise.   Don’t listen..... don’t read (except this column of course) and let them stew and rot in their own bile.

Piss on’em.  We’re Cardinals fans – We win even when we don’t.

Cardinals fans listen up..... yes, I’m talking to YOU – in toney LaDue and South County and St Charles and Dago Hill and Kirkwood and down river at Cape and Poplar Bluff and up river at Hannibal and Quincy and across river in Granite City and Wood River and west to Jeff City and Rolla and in every nook & every cranny of Mid America reached by the mega-watt blowtorch of KMOX.

If you’ve EVER enjoyed a Ted Drewes Custard..... celebrated a special occasion at Stan & Biggies or The Boat House @ Forest Park or Cyrano’s ..... The Muni Opera.... The Veiled Prophet..... played a round at Bellerive......  have a Stan or Gibby or Ozzie jersey your parents bought you at Famous-Barr or Stix,Baer&Fuller.

Love your Birds On The Bat.... in The Shadow of The Arch
Love Those Clydesdales !! ...... those grand and noble Clydesdales !!!

Love..... Red, Pepper, Paul & Dizzy, Marty, Enos, Orlando, Shannon, McCarver, Eckstein, Gibson, Curt, Ducky, Ozzie, Whitey, Tony, Harry and Jack, and “Fred” and yes, even Big Mc and Albert...... and, most of all we have #6 – Mr Cardinal ...... Forever the personification of each & every man that has ever proudly worn “The Birds on The Bat” across his chest.

... and now Matheny’s Boys - Freese and Carlos and The Matts and Yadi and Wano..... and this new kid Wacha.   To all who have ever worn the interlocking StL.

Cardinal Fans Be Proud...... for as long as there is on-going construction at Lambert Field..... or Forever whichever comes first.

To play for the Angels  =  $20,000,000/year
To be a Cardinals’ Fan  =  Priceless For Life

Best of many great columns lately! I am both a Red Sox and Cards fan, but will pull for the Cards in this one. I even have some "Birds on the Bat" cufflinks - actually die-cast and hand-painted metal replicas of the logo. Owned some Converse "Lou Brock's" as a kid. And you know I like RED!

I was actually in Little Rock, Arkansas on a Boy Scout trip the day after Dizzy Dean died in '74. Dominated all the papers in that part of the world. And I have watched a Cards away game while eating a great steak at Mike Shannon's in St. Louis.

The anti-Cards rumble in the pop culture makes my support for them even stronger. And you last column makes me believe that, if Phillip Rivers were a baseball player, he'd be a Cardinal!

With this great pitching staff (reminiscent of Gibson, Washburn, Carlton and Briles) I think the Cards take this one in six.

BL: And Wacha is JUST 22.... of course the BoSox 3rd baseman is just 21.

Could Rodon be pitching in WS next year?

I was doing fine with claims of a plethora, but are you really implying that anyone not acknowledging that Cardinals' persecution is widespread and because of the Cardinals' goodness is uninformed due to being preoccupied with the Carolina mess:-)

BL: Not with the C-Mess per se but with the goings-on de jour in the Ral-Dur-CHill universe.

The issue of "The Cardinal Way" is enjoying a bit of national debate because of the MLB Playoffs. That will subside as the WS wraps-up.

The issue of "The Carolina Way" is a regional issue that will percolate FOREVER but only within its own mini-universe of central NC.

And I am on record that The Carolina Way has always been totally bogus .... created solely to torment certain rival fan bases.

Of course, Clete is my guy. He couldn't hit like his brother, but Pinstripes..Ya know?

I find it fascinating, for some reason, that whenever anyone invokes Ken Boyer's name, they fail to mention the coolest thing about the guy.

See, Ken had these crazy big toes....Abnormaly longer than the rest of his digitus pedis. Consequently, every pair of cleats he wore, had a hole cut in the kangaroo leather to provide room for those anomalies. The boy played with his toes hangin' out.

Guess it's just the PT Barnum in me.

BL: Wasn't there a 3rd Boyer brother? Cloyd??

You not only write great stuff but you have a wealth of talent among your readers. Folks like CNR who have vast knowledge of these subjects. The depth of thought is immense. Ken B., he would never look down on you as a "Cat" as he doesn't many of us Wolfies. Stan was the epitome of talent and class. Boy, times have changed..

BL: As America "dumbs down" we realize how special how heroes were.

Well, I was bemused by your use of the word plethora to describe the hoards of keyboard jockeys that 'spew' hatred for the Cards. Then I googled 'hatred for the St. Louis Cardinals' after just hatred for the Cardinals (which sent me to a surprising number of sites devoted to dislike of those officers in the Catholic church). There was indeed some guys who do not like the St. Louis Cardinals. But then I googled hatred for the Red Sox and there were at least as many who really do care for the Carmine Hose too. I did not even bother to check on the hatred for the NY Yankees. I am pretty sure that would really put things into perspective. The Tebow effect, I do not get. Is your position that while some fans do not like the Red Sox and some that do not like the Yankees but the ones that do not like the Cardinals are the ones that are pinko, commie, atheists?

BL: Not sure Tebow-Hate is communist inspired or even left/right-wing. Tebow-hate (and Manning-hate) seems more inspired by visceral dislike of clean-cut Eagle Scout-types.

St Louis Cardinals apparently have assumed a similar clean-cut image. Some even say there is "a St Louis Cardinal WAY".... the dreaded "WAY" !!!!! We know how rival fan bases do tend to react to reports of "Ways" don't we?

Wow, who messed up the cereal this morning? It's baseball, and it's good, but it's not life or death!
Love the Cardinals but loved the Dodgers more (for family reasons). Love the Red Sox but loved the Orioles more (for more family reasons).
However, don't see anyone taking cheap shots at the Cardinals or the mid-Western way of life. Going to be a great World Series, and I can be happy with whoever wins this one. Still remember Country Slaughter scoring from first on the single !! Only Puig would try that today, but he would get thrown out :>)) Go Baseball !!

BL: I forget many of you rely 100% upon N&O and WRAL for all your sports news. I actually have readers who exist in a universe beyond the NCS/UNC bubble.

"Their world" does not consist of Jimmy V and/or Marvin/Julius 24/7/12 ad infinitum. :-)

The plethora of sniping attacks on Cardinal Baseball and Cardinal Baseball Fans will continue to escalate. Yes, you’ve seen it for several weeks now.... since the playoffs began. It will get worse.

If there is a plethora, why is this the first I have heard of it? Honestly I watch ESPN. I did not realize that the Cards are somehow the 'good guys'. Guess I need to do some research, although in the case of a plethora, generally research should not be necessary.

BL: Every man is responsible for his own plethoras. Not unlike how many in St Louis (and other places) can go weeks, months, years at a time without thinking of Jimmy V. AND an astounding number have never heard of Marvin, Jennifer or even Julius. YIKES!!!

My little league baseball team wore the Cards flannels, Garner Methodist Church. They were hot and baggy, but we looked like the real deal, although I did my looking from the far end of the bench.
Been a closet Cards fan and full time Reds fan ever since, with the occasional Orioles team here and there, depending on who was carrying the NL banner.
Best advise ever: don't listen to the spittle spewers. Who cares what a 30 year old life time failure, residing over his parent's garage, living a a "legend" behind a keyboard thinks about anything. Without Jim Goodmon, where would Laura or Binky be but in same such circumstance.

BL: Mentioning Jim Goodmon in a column involving Stan Musial seems sacrilegious.

Since its not the REDS, go CARDS. Growing up in Kentucky I could always get the Reds on radio and most times the Cards. There was only AM radio. I always pull for smaller market teams. Harry Caray on WMOX and Waite Hoyt on WLW. A young knothole baseball players dreams and imagination were put to full use. I could see the McMillan to Temple to Kluzewski double play. On several occasions as a young lad my dad or our team would travel to Cincy and if wearing our uniform could get in right field bleachers for.50 cents see our heroes and get a sunburn. I will be watching your Cards and hoping its 4 straight. Also congrats to you and your Tigers in the SEC. Hope you won't delete me from list being a big UK fan. Love your work.

BL: Delete you for being a UK fan ??? Heavens' No. The fan mix here would astound you.

FWIW... I don't consider myself "a Tar Heel fan" other than having some special friends associated with the Ath program.

Yes, The Reds are very similar to St Louis in their basic Mid-West values carrying over to their support of "solid citizens in sports".

Wally Post and Gus Bell and Joe Nuxhall and, of course, Sparky and TBRM. Don't think Sparky would approve of the BoSox beards AT ALL.
10/20/2013 1:02:26 PM

And Lou and Ken B (brother of Cletus :-))......

The green-eyed monster as Mom used to say will bite you in your successes......Envy its close ally.....
Watching Clemson and Florida State on CBS at my fitness club.....8:30AM Pattaya time....

BL: Bad day to be Dabo !!

It all began with the '26 Cards. St. Louis was a Browns' town until then. When the Cards came home to over 1,000,000 fans in the streets for the parade after beating Ruth, Gehrig Yankees in the Cards first World Series, St Louis has been a Cardinal town as has so many communities from Southern Indiana to far out west and from Keokuk to the Gulf of Mexico and all along the Mississippi Valley.

You have hit the bullseye when speaking of Stan as the epitome of a Cardinal. You mentioned a concrete at Ted Drewes and also mentioned Stan & Biggies.

When Stan and Lil's family lived down in St. Louis Hills off Chippawa you could join the throng at the Drewes Chippawa location and often see Stan and his neighborhood kids in the middle of it all. Stan would be doing magic tricks or playing his beloved Hohner harmonica for the crowd, who never asked for an autograph.

Or you could go over to the restaurant with your family a little later to have Stan sit down with your family to discuss schools, parish, or his favorite, the Cardinals.

Whatever the neighborhood, the Card players never let the fact that being able to hit, throw, run, or field did not define a person's character.

That is the Cardinal Way for which I am grateful.

Two North Carolina natives spent time as Cardinal captains. One, Jimmy Brown, over near Little Washington, was the Bobby Richardson of his era.

The other was the epitome of Cardinal hustle, Enos Slaughter. Old Country cried and sobbed in public in front of the cameras and mics when he was traded to the Yankees.

We all tried to emulate his toughness and hustle. Nobody could duplicate his throw to third or home.

When the Card fans sing the traditional Missouri Waltz, Meet Me in St Louis, Louis, the National Anthem, and Take Me Out at every game, they almost have the sound of the Welsh.

What will the Series bring? Of this I am sure, the Cards will hustle and play with love and respect for the game, and their fans.

BL: And never forget the Clydesdales at Grant's Farm !!
