BobLee Says

EeeCeeTeeCee..... Aaaarrrgghhh!

Sept 12,’13:  They are doomed to be George Harrison or the 3rd Manning Brother or any of Robin Hood’s Merry Men not named “Little John”.  They know that.  They don’t like that.  But they know that.   West of I-95 they are derided and poo-poohed by their fellow UNC System “snobs”.   But Downeast they RULE!  “They” are the progeny of Dr Leo Jenkins and Clarence Stasavich.  “They” are The Purple People of ECU..... AAarrgghhh! .......

Catamounts from Culhowee might envy its UNC System sister institution in Greenville for all the attention they DO get.   Fame is relative.  The UNC System is, alas, somewhat like a sled dog team.   Unless you are The Flagship, the view is the same for everyone else.

Many embattled Sons & Daughter of Ye Olde Well can tell you that attention and fame comes with a price.

Would “UNC’s Bonnie & Clyde”, aka Jennifer & Greg, be as notorious if they had pulled their capers in Pitt County?  ........ Would PackPride have a special webpage devoted to “Countdown To The Implosion of Minges Coliseum”?  ........  Has Dirty Dan Kane ever driven down Evans Street looking for a confidential informant?  No, No and No.

I grew up 25 miles from G-vegas long before it was G-vegas.  There is a Downeast rumor that my hommies had first choice between “a state institution for the mentally retarded” and “a teacher’s college”.   Some local politician, no doubt drunk as a coot from local ‘shine, said “we’ll take the crazy house”.

His ancestors still argue that, of course, he was referring to ECU or ECTC as it was first called.   Alas, we got Caswell Training School and Greenville got ECTC.  On many a Saturday since, “the crazy house” would be Dowdy-Ficklin Stadium.

Even when their UNC System brethren do “praise” ECU it usually contains a fishhook buried in that praise.   That ECU has “THE finest crop of purty little ol’ coeds east of Ol’ Miss” is universally accepted..... then a caveat has to be tacked on relative to their marginal intellect and virtue.   Ouch.

Being the “purple-haired stepchild” versus the two Triangle-area Bullies is simply how it is..... and forever will be.  No one ever said Life is fair.

The regional newspaper – The N&O – is operating hand-to-mouth and can’t afford even a volunteer “stringer” to send in ECU news-bits.    A couple of nubile ECU cheerleaders hanging over an I-95 overpass waving “ECU is a cool school” might work.   Maybe Sandra Bullock could “wear purple” in Blindside II?

Despite it all..... “they” draw packed houses on Fall Saturdays to play anonymous schools from faraway places week after week.  They do get the occasional VaTech, WVA and, every other decade, a Triangle bully has to “go slumming” and come to Greenville..... yet they keep filling and expanding their ball yard.  God bless’em.

Jeff Lebo might be “the next Brad Stephens and Butler” and have his Pirate hoopsters as a March Cinderella.   If he does, all the ESPN chatter will be Lebo’s Tar Heel heritage..... ouch.

UNC and NCSU home football games this season with ECU will create A LOT more “buzz” and sell bunches more seats than LouisianaWho and MiddleWhat?  Duh.

Bubba and Frau should sign long term deals with whoever replaced Terry Holland right now.  Come up with “fair” home-home deals and “book it Dano”.   It’s 2013 and the Sell Seats game in college football has new rules.

Yes, nitwit board monkeys w/ both NCSU and UNC whine “if we lose to ECU it will hamper our recruiting efforts in-state..... blah, blah, blah.  Why should we elevate their program?”   Simple solution you muddle-headed mo-rons..... don’t lose.  When/If ECU ever gets “afraid” to play a Big Four school, they will let it be known.

State doesn’t play Duke and UNC doesn’t play Wake except once a decade under Swofford’s new ACC.  That sucks!   Duke and Wake both should play ECU regularly too.   Frau won’t have to “deep discount” her tickets for ECU like she does for these other whozit games.   Bubba won’t see “aluminum” when ECU comes to town in three weeks.

Coach Ruff is a stand-up guy.   So are Larry and Dave.   Let’em play on a regular basis.   Are all three schools likely to always be stepping-stone programs for Big Time Top Ten gigs?   Maybe..... maybe not.

But but but BobLee..... ECU players are always “getting into trouble”!
Hey “glass house guys”..... put down your stone.
Wuffnuts and UNCloonies who whine about ECCrazies need to look in a mirror.

The rank&file alumni and fans of ECU, NCSU and UNCCH are interchangeable.  They are the “good people” who populate the towns, cities and metro areas from Murphy To Manteo.  Sure.... each school has their genetic misfires which they should, by law, keep chained up in the basement.  Their human hairball factions are, alas, also interchangeable.

There are a lot of “good kids” at ECU and AppyState and UNC-W too.   Especially good “boys”.  UNCCH has decreed “we don’t want in-state boys regardless of how impressive their grades and character might be”.   That’s incredibly stoopid.   UNCCH is prone to fits of “incredibly stoopid”.... if you haven’t noticed.

At State..... not nearly so stoopid, but ECU (and Appy and UNC-W) offer a broader mainstream curriculum than State does.   Downeast needs more occupational generalists than State can produce.... or than UNCCH cares to produce.

Will this nice positive piece about ECU attract 10s of 1,000s of Boneyard loonies to this site?   A bunch of meth-heads from Chocowinity invading BobLeeSays ??   Aaaaarrggghh!  ☺

Not to worry.   I have control of the comment zapper.   Folks with functioning brains are always welcome; and, of course, “purty little gals”...... regardless of their intellect or virtue.

There is a NEW Jack Reacher available – Never Go Back.  Literature’s favorite iconic lone wolf / white knight errant (with his toothbrush) does battle with sinister evil-doers while protecting a fair damsel, of course.  It’s a good’un.   I’m ¾ thru it..... Reacher is about to kick major butt.  Get’em Reacher.

That ECTC in Washington myth just keeps popping up. Washington folks need to do some reading about how ECTC was created. Zero to do with any school in Washington. Zero. Their egos go down hard.

BL: I had never heard that one but ECU Lore is not my specialty.

Tough to say definitively, but if you ask the UNC admissions folks, they'll tell you that the disparity comes because their applicant pool looks like that. Girls on average have much higher SAT and GPA.

BL: Actually the "official line" is "NC Boys don't take the right electives in high school."

That is straight from a recent UNCCH Chancellor.

Enjoyed the column and as a UNC fan and NC resident, would love an ACC that was smaller and contained ECU instead of BC, Syracuse, Pitt, etc.

One note, however..a quick google search revealed that the gender ratio at Chapel Hill, ECU, UNC-W, and Appy are all around 40 percent boys, 60 percent girls. Only NC state at 54-46 had a majority of men. Women are going to college in significantly greater numbers than men across the US. I'll leave the cause and effects of that to more learned observers.

Enjoy your columns

BL: Could be. I make up about 37% of the stuff I say. :-)

I do believe the testosterone levels of ECU and Appy "boys" is much higher than UNCCH's "Beiber Boys". A fact UNC-CH is quite proud of BTW.

The area around Little Washington has always been a favorite of mine since I visited with Jimmy Brown who was captain of the World Series winning 1942 Cardinals. He was from Martin County and had played baseball at what is now NCSU. He was indispensable to the Card team as he played second, short, and third.

Mr. Brown was a beloved player in St. Louis during his years with the Cards as he was a model for we little guys (and the Cards).

It seemed there was water everywhere. The Browns were a wonderful family that made a tremendous impression on me. He was just the opposite type person than was Leo Durocher and had a great influence on the younger Cardinals.

We often visited when we were in Eastern Carolina recruiting. At the time he was living in a small town just west of Little Washington.

The more time that I spent with people from North Carolina, the more respect I gained for them; great people in a great state. Cowdog has told me that when he left Yankeeland for Carolina he never looked back. You people have a way of doing that.

It will never happen. However, if possible, it would be wonderful if the schools over your way would get off the evil bandwagon of BTS, going back to a conference composed of Wake, State, UNC, Duke, ECU, UVa, Va Tech, Clemson, USC, and Maryland . . . well, I can dream.

ECU can compete with anyone for players as it has water, beaches, history, great people, a fine school. Can’t beat that combination O yea, great fans.

Once more, kudos to your commentators. Mr. Poon blew my mind with his comment to the Agent.

BL: A perspective all the way from Texas!

Big kiss to you, BobLee! G-Vegas, born and bred, and a double pirate by ed, now pining for water over here in Charlotte. I appreciate your Pirate love and will be Facebooking this. We ECU-ers know who we are and who we ain't, and we are happily secure in that knowledge. Love your column, it has been on my to-read list since I found it from Carolina Plotthound. Keep sending the Downeast love!

BL: Will DO! I think I OWNED The Boneyard yesterday. :-)

I am a WFU fan who now lives in Greenville. And I must say these guys have really come up in the world since Jos. A. Banks opened a clothing store here. These ECU guys are wearing collared shirts and some of them carry umbrellas to the games. No foolin'. Of course our beloved Daily Reflector spends more time talking about the Draconian and devastating budget cuts to the UNC-system than writing about ECU athletics. According to the Daily Reflector the budget cuts may cause ECU to close by Thanksgiving. And I'm thinking WFU wouldn't mind having Jeff Lebo up there in Winston & Salem. Ol' Jeff has a news basketball practice facility and the ECU faithful see a bright future. And yes, the ECU young ladies are getting more beautiful each year. I think it is the steroids that is put in fast-food chicken cause these are some healthy young lasses.

BL: "carry umbrellas to game" - YIKES!!

Hopefully Jeff will stick around for a long time.

My class was the first to admit women as Freshmen. Before that, they went to "WC" at
Greensboro for the first two years and then transferred in as Juniors. As a Freshman, I was dating a Junior for a time, and she had to be back in her dorm by 11 p.m. on weeknights. I, on the other hand, could stay out as long as I wished. Back then, Summer School was attractive because the male:female ratio was only 8:1, rather than the normal 12:1. My, how things have changed...some for the better and some not.

BL: The 180 degree flip in gender dominance will have dramatic long-term effects.
9/12/2013 2:23:22 AM

As a 1979 graduate of Chocowinity High School and a 1983 graduate of ECU, I enjoyed your piece on the Pirates, Pack and Heels. I had no problem hating the Pack and the Heels until two events happened to change my mind 1. I began socializing with a group of good friends who all went to Carolina or State at church, and 2. Both my kids decided to go to NC State. I now manage to at least not root for the teams playing against State and Carolina. Unless it is ECU. Go Pirates!

BL: Leaving "the lunatic fringe" is a seminal moment in a man's life. :-)
9/12/2013 12:46:33 AM

ECU is the Charlie Brown Christmas tree of college football.

BL: They draw 50,000/game with no conference rivals. Could State or UNC do that year after year?
9/11/2013 9:41:28 PM

BL: "Is that near Kennel Beach?"

Excuse me? What was that?

BL; :-)
9/11/2013 6:27:57 PM

CNR's old friend Rog, sent his fair share of Yankee high school baseball boys ECU's way.
My brothers nearly signed with the Pirates, as well.

BL, I used to absolutely love playing against the Purple. Gridiron and diamond, both always brought out a great crowd to watch us.

It truly is a bone of contention when my Wolfgang go off into THAT place.

Speaking of Chocowinity...When are you and Pierce gonna start helping us with the current administration's hell bent effort to destroy the waters of my second home on Blounts Creek?

The Martin-Marrietta mine deal is gettin' down to the nitty gritty, and wonder boy Pat and crew ain't seeming to be listening.

BL: Is that near Kennel Beach?
9/11/2013 5:35:25 PM

Beat me how coaches can complain about fans leaving early or worse not showing up at all when the powers that be prefer scheduling some school no one has heard of from half way across the continent to scheduling one that we know and know fans of. Football is much more fun to watch when there are bragging rights at stake ( I use the term advisedly ).
I am halfway through the latest Jack Reacher. So far, it is up to Lee Child's standard. If you like this book, I strongly suggest the Michael Forsythe series by Adrian McKinty.

BL: Jack's episode on the airplane is Classic Reacher.

Wes in RIC
As a kid, I remember going to countless Va Tech games as my dad is an alum. They were mediocre at best, always looked down upon by the big conference member UVa, and the Hokies were mired in the land of the Independent always begging to get into the ACC or any conference. For some reason though, there were always 40-50K people at all the games, even those against VMI. Then along came some SW Va guy named Beamer who got the Hokies to where they are today. All of the ACC schools should always keep VT's story in mind when thinking about ECU, because a program can go from obscurity to something bigger with the right coach, AD, program management, and a little bit of time. I'm sure it would be harder to replicate in this era since the deck is stacked against the small conference guys, but it certainly is possible.

Seriously - did anyone care about Louisville or Rutgers football just 10 years ago?

BL: Good point. I've on record for some time as a ECU for the ACC guy.
9/11/2013 2:19:52 PM

“THE finest crop of purty little ol’ coeds east of Ol’ Miss”

You know the Internet blog rules... pictures, or it didn't happen! Specially if they ever go to the beach?

BL: The Greenville Hooters doesn't win all its awards because of its cheese burgers. :-)
9/11/2013 1:42:56 PM

Thanks, BL, We appreciate your comments and observations. We are what we are. Did you know that ECTC was in Little Washington, before, Gvegas? MMF

BL: I did not know that!
9/11/2013 1:41:17 PM

We played a home game at BKS under the tall pines during the Bunting "chopping wood" years. Some loon sold his tickets to EZU fans seated directly in front of us. At least every 5 minutes he shouted "Carolina sxxks". The good new news is that he drank so much hooch that he passed out at the half and was only heard from again after his wife gathered him up after their loss to drive home. That was the first and only time I have seen a fan passed out and sleeping in the aisle at Kenan.
I am reasonably certain that the folks in admissions told this "gentleman" to get lost back when he age 18.

BL: One of my favorite BobLee-isms..... "The worst of THEM represents ALL of them.... The BEST of us represents all of us!"

That mindset really helps in rivalry combat.
9/11/2013 1:31:00 PM

Next time flag me down in the Choo Choo Lounge to meet Danny Talbott. I only know him from Player pictures.

Funny you brought up the gender mix at UNCCH. Now the block on Columbia between the Carolina Inn and the Zet house might not be a statistically valid sample, but my observation from 10:30 to 12:30 saturday was 90% female, moving in 5 girl coveys.

There were a few boys hanging around the fraternity houses, fewer still in Kenan. What seemed to be the largest group were blue painted or otherwise goober student section types.

Sad, unless your name is Skye Bolt.

BL: UNC males have been thoroughly "Beiber-ized".

DT is one of the really "good guys".
9/11/2013 1:06:56 PM

mr poon
I was recruited by Coach Clarence Stasavich in 1966 because I played on a single wing high school team and he was one of the last single wing coaches.Alabama,Georgia,UNC and Wake Forest also recruited me and Coach Bear Bryant personally visited me in Graham,NC.I still have the pictures we took with him.A memory I still cherish.I selected UNC and to this day I wish I had played for Wake.I developed several friendships with Wake players and their coach and the way the players were treated was very appealing to me.In any event a team member of mine was recruited nation wide and decided on ECU.He was the best single wing tailback I had ever seen and I believe he became an All American punter at ECU.I recall a fellow team mate of him at ECU told me around 1992 that he was forced by coach Clarence Stasavich to punt wearing a shoe.He was an incredible punter bare footed and it was incredible the height and distance he could punt bare footed.I once saw him punt the football 80 yds.It stunned the capacity crowd at our high school game.He would take that one right shoe off and it was quite a show. His name was Billy Wightman.I believe if he had gone to one of the SEC teams he would have become a national name. Thanks for reminding me of coach Clarence Stasavich and the single wing,it brought back a flood of good memories.

BL: Coach Stas came to ECC from Lenoir Rhyne and was indeed a "Legend" of that era of the 60s.

VERY "old school" and very successful.
9/11/2013 12:27:32 PM

Or a Baldwin brother... I never can name all 4 without googling.

BL: There are FOUR ??? Who knew?
9/11/2013 11:41:00 AM

I am always amused at the comments made on our loonie boards regarding ECU which imply the same surperior attitude towards the Pirates that we accuse the Heels of having toward us.
Meanwhile I have a son and grad of ECU who is fully supportive of the Wolfpack except when we play and often lose to the Pirates.

BL: You've noticed that huh? :-)

Trying to make sense of any gang-think on any fan loonie board is the ultimate "solitaire with a deck of 51".
9/11/2013 11:34:52 AM

I've been a Carolina fan since Jim Tatum put his cigar back in his mouth and shook my hand when I was 10-11. I've also been a ECTC fan since I was in high school and went down to visit buddies that were in school and watching Clarence Stas's teams.

There is not a better tailgate atmosphere than ECU. Not only are the fans great the co-eds are the prettiest. I still on occassion go down, eat bar b que and fried chicken from the great places down there. Almost 50,000 for every game.

Thanks for writing a positive piece on them. Sometimes I wonder why Rams and Wolfs are afraid of them. What great games they have when they play.

BL: Yep!
9/11/2013 11:17:14 AM

Seems like the order I always heard was:
"John, Paul, George and Ringo"

BL: Me too... but EVERYONE remembers Ringo.
9/11/2013 11:16:05 AM

NCSU, USC (the one in Columbia, not LA), Appalachian and ECU all benefit from UNC-CH steering boys elsewhere. Males haven't been proportionately represented in Chapel Hill since the early 80's, but if you look at their standardized test scores (of course they're biased, don't you know), they achieve on a slightly higher level than their female counterparts. If it was any other demographic group being slighted, every civil rights organization in the country would be camped out under Silent Sam.

Wonder when the Ram's Club figures out the link between male alumni and season ticket sales?

BL: It's not as if UNCCH admins hide their disdain for local undergrad males. They BOAST about it. ???

NC-bred males of the heterosexual persuasion are especially excluded. A tour of the UNCCH campus will reveal a decided scarcity of testosterone... more so each year.
9/11/2013 11:10:19 AM

I agree.... but what is the George Harrison comparison?

BL: The 4th Beatle..... the one people always name last.
