Like Herpes… Kinston’s infamous GlobalTrans Park is Baaaack!

I was among multi-thousands of Kinston/Lenoir County residents and expats that were thrilled in the early 90s about The Global TransPark (GTP).

“Arguably, the single largest political flim flam in the history of this state…”

This gory story is looong. But worth almost every word. Trust me…

AP logo

GTP was not only going to revitalize a DuPont-less / tobacco-less Down East economy… it was gonna, by golly, do for Lenoir County and environs what RTP has done for “The Triangle”. WOW!

In 1992-93 I attended a presentation by GTP conceptor John Kasada explaining how J-I-T manufacturing/distribution was The Wave of The Future. Kasada spoke to a group of “us” Raleigh mover/shakers at The Ramada Crabtree. VERY impressive… Kasada was “passionate”. It was infectious.

As I recall – J-I-T was for “Just-In-Time” which meant a manufacturing plant located literally ON an airport runway could receive components by air when needed to complete production then ship-out the finished products using the same airport facility.

Maintaining a costly parts inventory was eliminated. The airport would be strictly for the facilities located with-in The Park… no commercial passenger traffic. Convenient truck and rail-access and a nearby seaport would also be nice.

Dozens of companies would clamor to relocate to Kinston supplying over 100,000 high-paying jobs by 2010 to an economically distressed /depressed area.  That number fell short by 99,653 give or take…

Remember those last paragraphs. It’s important later on…

I owned real estate in Kinston. The prospect it might actually have resale value was exciting.

GTP kicked off with the usual ruffles & flourishes and bi-partisan political pontifications… of course. The NCGA appropriated oodles of tax-payer $$$… assorted other federal $$$ came in. Quite a “nest egg” to  SAVE KINSTON… and THE WHOLE DOWN EAST AREA of NC… YIPPEE .

Over $300,000,000 in guvmint funds have gone into GTP… and never been seen again. Unless you count a few seaside mansions at Figure Eight and stuff like that.

Twenty-five years later there is ONE small industry at Kinston’s Stalling Airfield… ONE… that is the equivalent of there ain’t SQUAT.

What happened to all the $300,000,000 of public funding? What happened indeed…

“All that money” went into fancy leather-bound feasibility studies prepared by very well-paid feasibility studiers… and all sorts of legal and “public relations” (??) crap. A few million here a few million there… pretty soon – POOF – $300,000,000 was All Gone. Jim Hunt

All gone to GOBs (Good Old Boys) who were long time supporters and contributors to North Carolina’s infamous Governor-for-Life James Baxter Hunt, Jr.

Hunt’s last life-term as Governor was 1993-2001… coinciding when GTP was approved for funding. Hunt’s iron-fisted hold on the Governor’s Office would be up in 2001. While the GTP “money pot” was under his control he would repay 30+ years of loyal contributors.  Do I need to mention that Jim and his GOBs were all Democrats?

Jim Hunt’s GOBs lined up at the trough and James B. Hunt Jr. ladled out the moolah. Moolah intended to “Save Kinston, Lenoir County and all of Down East”.

GOBs have healthy appetites. Before you could say “Flim Flam… Scam… Crooked Sumbitches” all the GTP funding was gone… burp.

Jim Hunt went home to Rock Ridge where the GOBs still visit to “kiss his ring” and chortle over the Greatest Political Flim Flam in North Carolina’s history.

Jim Hunt’s long time pal in Kinston – C. Felix Harvey – unloaded some depressed real estate to GTP at a fancy price and got a little-used, highway spur named in his honor.

Neither I, nor anyone I know in Kinston, benefitted from any real estate sales as a result of GTP. But, goodness knows, C. Felix  could always use a few more million. Bless his heart.

Soooo… GTP became a sad “punchline” around town / county. For the past 20 years, whenever anyone was having a problem with a relationship, job, car, sick pet, hemorrhoids, overdue library book, parking ticket… whatever… the stock response was “Don’t worry. The Global TransPark is going to solve ALL our problems. Just wait and see…” … sigh, sniff, sob.

Fast forward to This Week….

Maybe you’ve heard me mention my pal – Don “Kolchak” Carrington. Don is Executive Editor of The Carolina Journal.

A few of the Blockbusters that Don Carrington had “broken” over the years include:.

Don took the aerial photos of John Edwards’ palatial compound outside Chapel Hill.  Edward’s “Other Other America”. Those photos and “Rielle” kiboshed John’s political career… much to the regret of The News & Observer especially their ace political sleuth – RobRielleWho Christensen.

Don broke the story of the “Queen Mary” Easley Scandal at NC State. “Queen Mary’s” cozy deal with NCSU Trustee McQueen “Howdy Doody” Campbell. That one took down “a Queen”. a Chancellor, a Provost, a Howdy Doody, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree.

Don busted the infamous Randy Parton Theater Scam in Roanoke Rapids. I was sitting with “Kolchak” at THE Goofiest Press Conference Ever at The (toney) Umstead where Randy, Jethro, Elly Mae and Boss Hogg put on a Hoot I’ll never forget. Ya had to be there…

Don is really good at what he does.!   This week Don released his story on Return Of The GTP. Yep…. It’s BAAAAACK!

Here’s The Link …. CLICK HERE!Allen THomas

Seems a young fellow – Allen Thomas – who was most recently the Mayor of Greenville is coming to Kinston to be Mr Global TransPark. His gig in Greenville, albeit prestigious, didn’t pay well. Apparently this new gig with GTP does… pay well.

Have I mentioned that Allen’s dad – Joe Thomas – was a Jim Hunt GOB?  Here we go again.

When Ray/Roy “Chicken” Cooper whupped McCrory back in November (with those 10,000 midnight votes), Young Allen stood in the “Got anything for me, Roy?” line. Allen was thinking Head of DOT but Roy had already promised that plum to 5-6 others who outranked Joe’s boy Allen.

Ray/Roy dug around in the pile of “easy gigs with 6-figure salaries that I can give to people like Allen Thomas”. VOILA… Roy came up with Mr. GTP.

I’ve never met Allen Thomas.  I bet he’s a fine fellow.  A real Go-Getter.  He is a white male.  Lets assume he’s heterosexual.  The people that “own Roy Cooper” i.e. Rev “Bully” Barber and the LGBT Gang don’t allow Roy to appoint all that many straight white males to these crony jobs.  Be thankful there’s at least one… maybe.

I’ve reached the 1,000 word mark. Do you want me to stop? I’ll be glad to if that’s what you want? …. OK… I’ll continue.

WARNING: It gets a tad Silly now!

If Mr GTP can cajole one itty bitty company to relocate to “The GTP”. That will be a 100% improvement over the ONE that has come in the past 25 years.  You can bet that’s how The Cooper-lovin’ N&O will spin it too.

Earlier I noted, John Kasada’s model for GTP included convenient Interstate access… convenient railroad… and, ideally, a convenient seaport.

Ideally, a 500-mile circle from GTP would include many large population areas.  Draw a 500-mile circle from Kinston and 40% of it IS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN… uh oh.

Fred Smith chose centrally-located Memphis as HQ for FedEx for sound business reasons… not just the ribs at The Rendezvous.

Louisville KY would have been a terrific location for GTP… but then Jim Hunt’s GOBs woulda been SOL twenty years ago. … and Allen Thomas still waiting for Roy Cooper to come up with “something for Joe’s boy”.

What about “close proximity to a major Interstate”?  I-95 is fifty miles away … that’s 23 stop lights, six barbecue joints and eleven Dollar Stores.

Rerouting I-95 thru Downtown LaGrange might work.  Requiring a Billion dollars and ten years whichever comes first. That will piss off the folks in Smithfied and Selma but who cares…Vivian Howard

Kinston’s Celebrity Chef Vivian Howard could put on a Bake Sale to raise the Billion. OK… maybe 3-4 Bake  Sales.

Access to a major seaport to utilize That OCEAN that takes up 40% of the market area?

Dredge out a DownEast/Panama-esque Canal from Kinston to Morehead City using The Neuse River? Sure why not? … those fellas that dug up The Ram Neuse 40 years ago could probably do that. Another dozen or so Vivian Howard Bake Sales minimum.  More lemon bars Vivian!

One of my BFFs – MaryPage – could help. MaryPage is a lifelong Kinstonian, a lifelong PDEW, and a VERY VERY fine artist. She really is… all three!

PDEW = Pretty Down East Woman… for those of you who don’t follow BobLee. Is there anybody who “doesn’t follow BobLee”?

MaryPage could organize a Starving Artist Sale at Fairfield Park… in addition to her most excellent works perhaps she could find a few velvet Elvis’… and Dogs Playing Poker prints are always popular.

Vivian, MaryPage and a bunch of other locals… maybe local Bojangles Tycoon Cam McRae could kick-in a nickle for every Bo-biscuit he sells on Tuesdays. Whattaya say Cam?

By golly… GTP might work this time around… giggle, giggle.   You just know “Joe’s boy” is gonna go gangbusters… working tirelessly day and night and weekends scouring the countryside for…. at least one more business so GTP has a total of TWO.

Not everyone “reads Reader Comments”.  If you’ve got another 20 minutes I strongly recommend you read the 90+ comments this column has received.  We want you to get a full spectrum of opinions, not just mine,

There are 100s of sad tales like this one all across America. Political hacks and $300,000,000 flim-flams are nothing new.

This expose won’t make a bit of difference. But, if through the utter futility of it all, it made you laugh… what else might you have done the past ten minutes that woulda been a better use of your time. Really?

I think $65 million of the cost of the Felix Harvey Parkway to Nowhere came from the stimulus package. As I recall Gov Dumplin’ and her Czars selected the parkway because it was “shovel ready.” Recent traffic counts on the Parkway are up to 8 cars per day on busy days…….those days being when Ken’s Grill is serving Barbecue.

  • Bob Dixon Reply

True story. About the same time the NCDOT was projecting 100,000 jobs by 2010 in the GTP, they were projecting traffic on the then new southern leg of the Charlotte outer belt loop (I-485). In 1996, 4 years after the opening of the first 5 mile leg, they found that segment already carried TRIPLE the amount of cars the NCDOT projected would travel on that segment in 2010. I guess Charlotte stole all the people that were supposed to move to Kinston. Go figure.

    • Former96heel Reply

Don’t even get started on 485. The new and improved Southern version has a full lane that cannot be used, because it is being held for future toll lanes. Apparently there is a reg in place that once a lane is open and free, it cannot be converted to toll use, so instead of having better traffic flow now, the state has it barreled off for a future toll lane. It is difficult to explain to people how asinine that concept is, then you realize it comes from the DOT.
      .
Ask Gov Pat how popular that toll is. The Northern Meck and Lake Norman voters made sure not to show up for him last year.

Holy Smokes AP, this piece just eclipsed 10x the number of readers as yesterday’s top N&O story!
I keep dreaming of a world where we cut these kinds of boondoggles in half. Realistically, they will never disappear. This story will read the same as the CH-Durham light rail in 30 years, just with a different cast of characters. Where are the teachers shouting about fair pay when this stuff comes up?

Pretty much. “….don’t study History = doomed to repeat it.” THAT is why the current push to “revise history” is so sinister. Political scallywags existed in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome.

“Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” The quote is most likely due to George Santayana, and in its original form it read, ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’
I did not have a clue as to Santayana is or was….maybe a rap star. BUT, i had sent out an email about removing CARR from the DCPSS and also the Wiki on CARRboro. Seems like Mr. Carr was not a bad fellow in that he contributed a lot (Money and Facilities) to Orange County, Durham County and UNC. THAT is why the “center of liberalism” in NC is named after him.
Sent this to a VERY liberal minded retired educator that lived in Chapel Hill and asked about her opinion of what is going on in her fine city of Richmond. She opened her response to me with the quote….from Santayana. That was one she often used in her history classes. She is NOT of the opinion that all the statues MUST come down. Richmond also has “sanitized” some buildings named after Harry Byrd.
Don’t know what is going to happen, but a friend of the liberal persuasion was sort of (I THINK) joking about how many rounds of Ammo he would need as a PREPPER. The conclusion. One round per raider if you are good shot. Two to Three if you are mediocre and/or use a pistol. Take that number and multiply it by the adult and teenage population with in a ten mile radius of your house….add 25% for a fudge factor. When Libs start talking Prepping….you KNOW it is getting bad.

Thanks. We probably should offer refresher courses occasionally. “RobRielleWHO is Rob Christensen – crackerjack political reporter/columnist for The N&O. Excuse me… “AWARD-WINNING” crackerjack political reporter and newshound for The N&O.
      .
RobRW gained eternal infamy during the Train Wreck known as John Edwards Prez Campaign. RobRW was “imbedded” in the Edwards Campaign. Reports that he gave John his weekly mani-pedis are unconfirmed but RobRW WAS on a first name basis with the guy that DID. Two Weeks AFTER 2,000,000,000 Chinese plus The Man In The Moon knew all the gory details about Rielle Hunter and her “special relationhip” with the candidate, RobRW first mentioned “the mysterious videographer” and the scandal in The N&O claiming he knew absolutely nothing about it. Reports of the scandalous affair had been “all over everywhere” for months of course.
      .
Consistent with The N&O’s sordid history of overt partisanship, RobRW and his employer had withheld the story to protect “their candidate”. Wayback then The N&O was already having $$$ woes. If “a local boy” made it to The WH, The N&O and RobRielleWHO would be “insiders” for sure. Alas… it didn’t go their way. History is divided over whether The Edwards Scandal or Duke Lacrosse was The N&O’s Worst Journalistic Embarrassment… or is that yet to come?

The latest chapter to the GTP saga included finally getting a rail spur. For years many cried out, “The Global Transpark will become successful when we get rail service.” So some $13 million later we have rail service. However, rail rates where so much higher than trucking rates that the rail spur sits unused, unloved and rusting.

At first the GTP was unsuccessful because we did not have an interstate highway. So plans were made to reroute I95 through Kinston but the planner of that idea was locked away.

Then came the cry that we did not have deep water port service. So a plan was drawn up to have the port at Morehead City extended to Kinston. This was to be financed by having the Big Rock Tournament out at the end of the runway and near the GTP Port but was finally shelved when the liquor ran out.

The GTP did get some use this past week when the Marines used it as a practice area for carrying out a raid on a boondoogle. Next I think the Marines will probably land at Randy Parton’s Theater.

As far as Mayor Thomas is concerned I had always understood that he would take over when Walter Jones, Jr., retired from Congress. Or that Mayor Thomas would become the new US Senator from the east. I cannot imagine the GTP being a stepping stone except maybe to cross over the River Styx.

    Gotta love the GTP.

You know better than me, since you are a native son of Kinston, the perils of naming local names, especially prominent ones like Felix Harvey. Mr. Harvey seemed to prefer being in the background. His name was rarely in the KDFP, radio, TV. Pulling strings out of view.
    .
Like many locals, I’ve heard both good and not so great things about FH. Much of the criticism, I considered the source. Usually a perpetually bitter individual but it was odd that I personally only heard one person, a former HS classmate, heap personal praise and staunchly defended FH but that person worked for him fresh out of UNC-CH until he died. FH was only one of a small few old guard “power families” in Kinston. That he was involved in the GTP and benefitted from it should further temper local opinions.
    .
One of the companies under Harvey Enterprises started while FH was living has been quietly amassing “distressed” agricultural properties in NC and other states. The company operates legally and under the radar. Family members therefor should not be surprised when uncomplimentary comparisons to depression era land grabbers – or whatever the term is – are inevitably given. One rarely will hear local criticism of power families in small towns because there can be consequences.
    .
Kinston is no exception. Kinston is a small town and why is it not only NOT growing, but getting smaller and smaller? Perhaps because so few locals have been willing to challenge the status quo wielded by the big fish dominating a stagnating pond. Maybe this is too harsh, but where were the ones other than those (Mr’s Brody & Poole) that wisely resisted the greed and avoided creating an even larger disaster.
    .
I know there are a few “new” locals doing great things that are starting to make a difference. I’d be interested in hearing more about this from locals in the know and still living there. These relatively new young guns seem to be trying to do more good – at least visibly – for Kinston than the “old money” families ever did. Hopefully they will start speaking out soon, before it really is too late.

CFH was a very prominent local/regional mover/shaker for 60+ years and his father before him. That prominence/power brings fame and infamy, some deserved some not. CFH was “a big boy”. He could “take it”.
      .
CFH was a prominent supporter of Jim Hunt. CFH profited from GTP, very very few did. Those are FACTS.
      .
I LOVE THIS SUBJECT…. “Small towns and the handful of families that “own” them”. I LOVE it so much I’m going to do an entire column… maybe a series… on this topic. It is fascinating because it goes all the way back to the Feudal System in Europe with Lords and serfs.
      .
Yes, it is associated with small Southern towns and who owns the cotton gin (The Harveys) or who owns the mercantile store (Brodys, Weils) or The Banks. In West Virginia who owns the coal mine (think Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “I owe my soul to the company store”). In New England – Who owns the shoe factory. Inthe Old West… who owns the gold/silver mine / the Saloon. Usually those same families control the banks which control loans which control the “little people”. It is not a complicated system at all.
      .
Yes in Kinston for the past 75+ years it is/was The Harveys, Perrys, Pooles, Brodys. It has been “rumored” that the Harveys/Brodys “conspired” to discourage new industry because it would mean increased wages they paid their employees. Who knows. Like all “dictators” some can be more benevolent than others…
      .
Usually the strangeholds dissipate as 3rd-4th generations of the dominate families move away or become so incompetent their fiefdoms collapse.
      .
      FASCINATING TOPIC… Thanks!

It also proves more “insight” into how a “party” (probably happens on the GOOD side of the FORCE, sadly, also) can corrupt and control. Not being from DOWN EAST or in the “Inner Sanctum” of such high level and high $$ schemes, I can only relate what it was like in the 50’s and up in the Piedmont.
    .
My dad was a motor grader operator for the NCDOT. He worked hard and was not “in” the IN (spelled DEMOCRATIC) crowd. We scraped by and my parents worked hard and my mom actually had two jobs to send me to NCSU. When it was election time, my dad was “REQUIRED” to take off a “sick” day and tote folks to the polls. Sometimes it were the SAME folks in the AM and then in the PM. They had a pick-up truck at the various polling places and there were smokes and booze and such for the “voters”. He was also NOT allowed to take my grandparents (known Republicans) to the polls.
    .
When there was a change in the local Democratic County Commissioners seats, then there was a POWER struggle within the local DOT. The Dem boys who had jobs because their uncles wrote large checks would be in jeopardy of losing their jobs to the relatives of the NEW DEM commissioners. Finally, like a scene from the Godfather, the CHIEF DEM would sit down the warring factions and make a call….or tell folks that he who donates the MOST $$, gets the favors. The quality of these DOT workers, many of which were DEM Promoted Supervisors, was questionable and they were known to frequent the rural homes where the RED LIGHTS were hung. The propriertess of the establishment would provide “entertainment” during the daytime for the supervisors….and THEN the supervisors would ensure that the roads to such places were “always a TOP Priority”. Don’t know how the ladies voted…but I suspect it was NOT for the GOOD GUYS.
    .
THAT is what influenced me at such a young and tender age to distrust the NC Political structure….as well as marrying a fine lady whose mother was a teacher and her job was always in peril if her family did not cater to the DEM county commissioners and the DEM county BOE. Sad….but true.
    .
AP, your column and the COMMENTS, should be required reading in 9th grade civics…but right now they are rewriting history….statue by statue….

Similar story in my family 68′. Little sister worked in the AG’s office. I announced to my parents I was uncoupling from the Democrats and becoming a Republican. Mom intervened and told me that her State job and my sister’s job would be easier to keep if I remained a registered Democrat. So I did. Mom never figured that Lacy Thornburg would, one day, change her calculus. Never voted for more than a very select handful since, mostly as a spoiler, but I’m still on their rolls to make them think I’m on their side. Just like the Robin Williams golf skit. The inventors of the game of golf put that slick green oasisy looking thing at the end of a hole to give players a false hope on conquering the sport. Mom’s dead, sister retired. On paper I’m still one of “them.” I’m pretty sure there are hundreds-of-thousands of us Jessecrats in NC.

I think Ms. Vivian has been far more efficient in creating jobs than the Gov for Life’s white elephant. GTP has consumed 300 million to produce 1000 private sector jobs according to Joe’s boy. That’s $300k of investment per job. I’m not counting the state jobs, I know how that BS works – they’ll count anything in a state car that drives by as a employee.
        .
Ms. Vivian on the other hand, or her partners, may have invested 2 million in the restaurant. I’m estimating she has 35 employees. That’s about 57,000 per job. It’s all private money, it’s been making money for some time and has stimulated the Kinston economy some with other businesses starting around it. Shoot, she’s starting a couple of more restaurants.
        .
The State guvmint’s behavior repeated itself with the “Who the hell is” Randy Pardon theater and trailer park. The medicine show pulled up to town hall one day, drew a big crowd and started the pitch. Is your economy down, not doing so well? Have your jobs flown the coop? Need some help? Well, step right up, we have this wonderful elixir that will cure all your woes, stimulate your economy, put hair on your chest and song in you heart. All for the fabulous low price of 21 million dollars.
        .
And the poor souls, desperate for jobs; a stable economy and a future for their kids, believed everything they were told, signed up and got took. The engineers, grant writers, “economic developers” and the politicians all made some money. RR got left with the tab. Last time I checked, Roanoke Rapids still owes 15 million after 10 years.
        .
At least Kinston is not on the hook for the money. Someone had good sense to steer clear.

Joe’s boy will help remind you of Jim Hunt in stature. I don’t think he uses the same tricks to hide it like ole Jim used to do. He would never let himself be photographed with his HP body guards as they were hulking masses that would further shrink him in people’s minds. He loved some lifts and a high podium. I remember as a young waiter at the Capital City club one day, Jim, the sitting guv, Holshouser, whom he succeeded, Bob Scott and Dan Moore were all there the same day for lunch. What a spectacle that was. Hunt never even rose as they each came to greet him. Brushed them all off like lint. Joe’s boy does love him some him, but he still has a ways to go to catch ole Jim.

Some of the GTP history is funny. I remember during all the hype when Mayor Ritch decided that we needed a new golf course so that the 50,000 employees plus dependents would have a modern track on which to play. So a consultant was hired. This consultant stood in front of the Kinston City Council and proclaimed, “Kinston could become the next Pinehurst.” We were all giddy with excitement.
    .
The next week in Rotary Dr. McDaniel said that rather than ponds we could use hog lagoons. Then the Mayor called a meeting of the power land owners, country club board members, industrial development people, etc. We had the meeting at the old post office building on Queen St which then housed Ron Baker’s industrial development folks.
    .
At the meeting the Mayor said we needed to move the country club and have a development with many, many residential sites along the holes. The golf course architect who built Tidewater Golf Course in Myrtle Beach was introduced to the group. The site of the new golf course would be in that area west of Rouse Road behind where Dr. Grover Smith used to live. Ron Baker said we needed the new golf course to recruit rich folk to move their plants here. There was a lively discussion.
    .
Then Mr. Leo Brody spoke. Mr. Brody was known not to speak much so when he did speak it was wise to listen. It was like E.F. Hutton speaking. Mr. Brody took a yellow legal pad and listed the lots already available and then listed the “absorption rate” or number of lots being used each year. Then he stated that we already had many years worth of lots and that he would like to see some of these plants under construction before developing any more lots. At this point W. Roy Poole stood up and said, “I have made a lot of money following Mr. Leo’s advice. Good bye.” That ended the moving of the country club and the development of the new Pinehurst. When you close your eyes tonight please try to visualize Kinston as the next Pinehurst. I have been trying for more than 20 years and cannot quite grasp the image.
    .
Sadly this is a true story.

No more calls WE HAVE OUR WINNER! I can picture that meeting. Right out of 76 Trombones with Prof Harold Hill lamenting the evils of P-O-O-L. … or the Andy Griffith episode when Hollywood was going to film a movie in Mayberry?
      .
Didn’t Roy Poole’s grandson do prison time for being a stooge or “bag man” for Easley? Can’t recall his name. He was an “up and comer” in NCDems.
      .

And let us not forget the $25 million dollar “LOAN” made to the Transpark. The money came from the Escheats Fund which is designed to help students in need. Somehow or another the General Assembly saw the GTP as some type of student in need and sent them the cash. And lo and behold, the GTP could not pay back the loan. Surprise, surprise. When the loan plus interest got to over $40 million the good folks in the General Assembly wiped the debt away, all sins washed and cleansed. So the poor souls who died intestate had their money claimed by the Escheats Fund and then the legislature gave the money to the Transpark for wine, cheese and FaceBook watching. What happened to the money is left to your imagination. Best thing to do is write a will or the GTP may get your cash.

When this GTP got started there was a big to do over just where it would be sited. In the end it came down to two or so with one being in Maxton NC. My naive self at the time looked at Kinston and Maxton and thought, this is easy, Maxton is right on I-95, right on the major NC CSX rail route with that line having a direct route to the NC major port in Wilmington, none of which Kinston could claim. Not to mention there was already infrastructure and a long runway in Maxton since it was used as a air training facility in the war. Slam dunk, except as you note Jim Hunt wanted GTP for other reasons.
    .
Fast forward to today where our Governor for life Jimmy has been pushing hard before and since he left office for a four lane interstate quality highway for him and his friends in Wilson to get to the Wilmington beaches maybe 10 minutes sooner. So we have highway US 117 from Wilson to Goldsboro turned into I 795 with the cost of hundreds of millions and continued spending of hundreds of millions to get a already very nice four lane US 117 highway from Goldsboro to I-40 ungraded to interstate all the way from Wilson to I-40.
    .
Nevermind that we already have duplicate I-95 and a 4 lane US 70 right beside this new highway making this trip four lane to Wilmington already. Nosiree Jimmy needs that extra 10 minutes for his beach trip costing the rest of us millions and more millions. When will this man go away and leave us alone?

Spirit Aero got an estimated $240 million to create 1,000 jobs. Of that $240 the Golden Leaf Slush Fund wrote the first check of $100 million. At the time as I recall the Executive Director of the Golden Leaf was none other that Easley’s former budget director, Danny Gerlach. Also a part of the Aero incentive was reduced water rates from the City of Kinston. Who do you reckon financed that discount?
    .
Flying hogs to China. Flying BMW’s to Los Angeles. Flying strawberries to France. I have heard them all.
    .
Another interesting side note: The GTP was originally to be situated at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro. The cities all got together and voted that Seymour Johnson was the ideal spot as their runways were long, numerous and in place. However, as the deal got further up the chain of command someone said that in time of national emergency Seymour Johnson did not need to wait for a planeload of hogs to clear off the runway. So at the last minute Stallings Field got the deal.
    .
I got called to the little trailer set up out at the GTP early on for a chance to make my contribution. It was worse than a church meeting where funds need to be raised. The only difference was the liquor served at the GTP was of a higher quality than that at church. I politely declined and I left bereft of decency, unfit to hold communion with true and upright men.

Is that where Capt. Kidd’s treasure is buried… or a nuclear waste dump?

Also known as Anthrax Island, but the USDA says it’s perfectly safe, and they can’t be wrong.

Nelson DeMille wrote a novel about it as I recall.

I’ve never read anything by him. Good book?

I like him. Lots of his crime / thrillers are set on Long Island. Two of my NDeM favorites are The Gold Coast and The Gate House. His reoccuring character is John Corey – a rogue FBI agent in NYC.

BobLee sure was heralding your work. You should be proud. On another note, you should read this:
            http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Houston-dams-are-old-beat-up-and-a-vital-line-of-9199908.php

The dam situation in Houston is an old one. Nobody wants to listen to the Corps because that would be expensive and interfere with kickbacks from developers. We have a similar problem locally if you dig deep enough to find it.

BobLee is “the wind beneath my wings”! He says “GTP” is getting close in total views to “Did Carolina Marry A Stripper”…. OMG! I never imagined such…
