News&Observer BEGGING for subscribers

N&O

July02/ 2017

Oh how the once mighty have fallen…. SPLATT!  For all of you who have so often said: “The News&Observer / N&O is not worth a plugged nickle” … YOU ARE WRONG

PLUS:  The N&O’s “Keep Your Mouth Shut… or ELSE” form that all terminated employees MUST sign.

AgentPierce

By their own assessment a copy of a News&Observer is now officially worth $.054 or slightly more than “a nickle”. Be it plugged… wooden… or in a tip jar at a Waffle House in Garner.

As of June 2017… a year’s subscription to McClatchy’s Raleigh-based failing regional newspaper is $20.00.

$20.00 divided by 365 days = $.054 / copy.

N&O

For The Record:  I DID NOT click on this ad.  I never click on any link from organizations I don’t trust.  That certainly applies in this case.  Do so at your own peril.

When we stopped our subscription over a dozen years ago, the going rate was $75.00 for a 6-month subscription or $150.00/year.  And $98/year for PayWall on-line access.  When we stopped our subscription we did NOT “go blind”.… “grow hair in our palms”… or develop any other malady. All that happened is we were no longer paying to be insulted by those arrogant, supercilious sons-of-bitches.

Stopping your N&O subscription is the same as UNFRIENDING liberal jackasses on Facebook. Very very simple solution to a daily unnecessary impediment to “having a good day”.

Fifty-plus years of aggressively insulting 50+% of its regional market. Then amping that up into full-scale War the past ten years.

dem chickens done come home to roost…

“Consider supporting us…” pleads  a heartless monopoly that bled area small business owners dry with non-negotiable exorbitant advertising rates for 100 years…  under two owners – the Daniels Family and now Sacramento-based McClatchy Corp.  PUH-leeze.

Whats Next N&O ?

As the once notorious money-printing machine struggles to keep its lights on and meet an ever-dwindling payroll… maybe:

A GoFundMe campaign? OR…

A charity street carnival in adjacent Nash Square where gullible locals could buy a $20 subscription AND get their choice of:

(1) A signed 8×10 of RobRielleWHO Christensen giving Rielle Hunter a pedicure.
(2) A signed 8×10 of RobRielleWHO Christensen giving John Edwards a pedicure.
(3) A YouTube of Barry “Sportin’ Life” Saunders dressed in a Klan robe riding backwards on a mule through Johnston County.
(4) A 2×3’ poster of “Damn Dan” Kane being a human piñata at a Rams Club wine & cheese tasting in the Dean Dome parking lot.
(5) A heretofore secret tape made of Dean Smith, Frank Daniels, Claude Sitton and Mickey McCarthy plotting “here’s how we will take down Jimmy V”.
(6) The video of former Executive Editor Melanie Sill and former News Editor Linda Williams building the display case for the Pulitzer they were surely going to win for their “stellar reporting” of Duke Lacrosse Scandal… a.k.a The Greatest Journalistic Embarrassment of The Millennium
(7) The original Frank Daniels’ Jr quote “If we issued corrections for all of our mistakes, it might affect our credibility.”
(8) Editorial Editor Ned “DWI” Barnett being mug-shot and finger-printed at the Wake County Jail.
(9) The roll of duct tape used by Asst Editorial Editor Jim Jenkins to tape off his “Les Nessman office” in the N&O basement.

AND… if you purchase two or more $20 subscriptions, you get a bonus. The Directors Cut of the long rumored video of:

Reverend William “Bully” Barber “supposedly” ordering the N&O Senior Management to:
#1.. strip down to their scivees…
#2.. crawl around on the floor barking like cocker spaniels…
#3.. feed him “80,000 maybe more” M&Ms on a sterling silver spoon while…
#4.. referring to him as “Pope Bully, Sir”.

Barber 4

If there is such a video, THAT might actually be worth $20.

A rumor circulating that “Bully” Barber might purchase the embattled newspaper is NOT true.  “Bully” may, however, order WRAL’s Jim Goodmon Sr to purchase it then give it to “Bully”.  “Bully” is a big proponent of using OPM i.e. Other Peoples Money, especially money from old white men suffering from severe limo liberal guilt.

If the above plan is as ineffective at slowing down the hemorrhaging of red ink as previous plans have been; even more drastic cost-cutting may be necessary.  Employees being terminated may be forced to pay for their take-home copy of the infamous Keep Your Mouth Shut… Or Else form.

The WHAT?  Really, you haven’t heard about the N&O infamous Keep Your Mouth Shut… Or Else form.  Buy a drink for any of the 100s of former N&O employees waiting tables in the area.  Here’s why you don’t know about it…

YOU DIDN’T KNOW BECAUSE:  Loyal employees unceremoniously terminated at The N&O, in order to get their final check, have to sign a legal agreement not to “go public” with ANYTHING negative about the working conditions and/or financial distress of the company.  Considering how many employees they have terminated over the past five years, they must print those Keep Your Mouth Shut.. Or Else forms by the 100s.

You knew it was getting bad at The N&O when fish would no longer consent to being wrapped in it… and canaries complained if it lined their bird cages.

I confess when I first read their Twitter ad I thought they were saying they would PAY me $20 to read the damn thing.   Then I realized…

where would The N&O ever come up with $20?

AP, I finally had all I could take and cancelled my subscription to the N&R Fishrap Or at least I tried to. Called every number in the book and could never get any one. Finally left a message for editor Allan Johnson, told him who I was what I did and would he please call me back.
    .
Guess he thought I was going to sue them cause he called back. Told I wanted to cancel but couldn’t get any response. He wanted to know why and I told him. It wasn’t pretty. Took my info and said he would take care of it.
    .
Week later still getting paper. Tried again . Finally got some girl, said they never heard from Johnson. Told her they could keep sending but I wasn’t paying. Finally stopped. Then last night I get a call wanting to talk about renewing. This is a family site I wont repeat what I said, less pretty than the first one. These people are really sad. Sorry about the length makes me feel like Kennel. MAHA.

FWIW… “they” are all pulling that crap these days. Have been for several years. They (failing newspapers) need large data bases to set ad rates. “Buy a digital ad and THESE MANY people will see your ad and rush out to buy your product/service.”
      .
Every study shows very few people pay attention to digital ads. Hence the trend towards intrusive “pop ups” and automatic videos… THAT EVERYONE HATES.
      .
BY LAW they have to delete your name/e-address upon request. All “us” in the website/Interney biz have to do that. But it is a jaywalking crime rarely enforced. It is worth the risk to do it as they are all desperate for ad $$$.

    AP,
Need to add another video. Reporter Randy Mandy Locke caught in Craigslist sting where she is “Working” the conventions trying to earn extra money to pay her punitive award to SBI agent Beth Desmond. Jury found N&O guilty and awarded damages exceeding State cap. Mandy was personally required to pay $75K. N&O lawyer used anathema to decry the attack on democracy when a newspaper can’t distort facts and tell lies to sell newspapers.
    .
Did also point out how financially unsound it was.
    .
This struck a sour chord as Randy Mandy also clicked out distorted hit pieces on NCDoL Commissioner Cherie Berry. Perhaps a photo of Randy being stuck in an elevator, only to find out it was a trash compactor….ala Star Wars scene.
Killed my subscription when N&O said I did not have an account, but had my CC info on file. Amex collected 6 months of payments.
    .
Have not clicked on the special, but the normal digital rate is $13 per month. Times be tough.
    .
Need a meme of Berger & McCrory tag teaming the N&O. That would set Twitter on fire

I delivered tens of thousands News and Observers and Raligh Times as both a teenager and a young adult. I let my N&O subscription go several years ago after reading an opinion piece written by one of the editors explaining that the voter ID cause was simply modern day Jim Crow politics designed to eliminate the african american vote.
    .
Several months later, while attending the state fair, my children were lured into the N&O tent to “spin the wheel” for free prizes. While waiting, I was approached by a fine gentlemen soliciting a subscription at a special price. When I inquired as to if they accepted checks for payment, I was informed only with a valid photo ID. I politely informed the nice man that requiring potential subscribers to provide photo ID was akin to discrimination and a concise attempt to limit readership.

Other than yellow dog Lib/Dems whose opinions I ignore… the ONLY excuses I ever hear for “subscribing to The N&O are (1) coupons for groceries and (2) obituaries.
      .
I used to get “I just like a newspaper with my morning coffee” but don’t hear that weak excuse much any more.

I did indeed. Back in the pre-Duke Lacrosse Days. I sat-in on their daily Front Page meetings for a month. and first met John Drescher who was Asst Editor at that time to the Notorious Melanie Sill (yuck, ptui!). John and I are still friends in the way that BobLee and UNC’s Bubba Cunningham are friends. Friends with the individual but steadfast opponents of the organizations.
      .
“They” have a memorized mantra that they all recite when the issue of partisan political bias is brought up. It is impenetrable… and a complete waste of time to even discuss… i.e. “talk to the hand”.
      .
It was John that set-up the famous Ebony & Ivory Meetings…. BELO and I had a series of lunches to discuss our perspectives growing up in the same eras in NC but one black… one white. Great idea but doomed to be a train wreck. BELO’s insistence that EVERY Repub is a member of “the Klan” kinda doomed it. Alls we agreed on is we both had a preference for blond white women. That took us only so far… sigh.

I occasionally go to the N&O comment pages to rattle the cages of our local Bolsheviks, but I haven’t read the paper in years. It’s no bigger than the free hippy rags last time I saw it.
Let’s see; Jim Jenkins, Ferrel Guillory, Dennis Rogers, Ruth Sheehan…where are they now?

    • Agent Pierce Reply

Dennis retired before the McClatchy stock price tanked… Ruth was thrown under the bus by Orage Quarles for HIS Duke Lacrosse disaster. She now does pro bono legal assistance… Jim Jenkins is still hanging around. Like the poor schlub in Office Space with his stapler.

There are numerous jurisdictions involved at various local levels… school boards etc. The Chairman of the State Board of Education is a Repub – former US Congressman Bill Cobey. The newly elected NC Secty of Education is a Repub replacing a long time Deoc hardliner.
          .
What you really want to know is why hasn’t the UNC BOG (Repub majority) “cleaned out” UNCCH? A lot of folks ask that. They (BOG) HAVE put in “conservative Chancs at UNC-W and ECU and several other of the 17 schools. The UNC BOG Prez is “that Bush woman” Margaret Spelling who has been somewhat of a disappointment to Repubs thus far.
          .
The Lib/Dems did not “take over” public education / higher education overnight. They did it over several decades or more. To “clean it out” will take decades too. The Lib influence is in admins, supts, principals et al.
          .
All I say is at the end of a day… politicians don’t ever accomplish very much or make a significant difference in anything… When all is said and done much more is always said than ever done.

Replace “News and Observer” with “San Antonio Express News” and I could have written this column word-for-word. All the major newspapers have a subscriber problem, and are in complete denial about it. Not only was the local SAEN insulting half their readership, but they would not even honor subscription agreements. The last time I renewed a subscription for six months I only got about five months because the price went up in the interim, so they “adjusted” my subscription date accordingly. I proceeded to “adjust” my subscription date to “never,” and haven’t looked back.

    • Agent Pierce Reply

I don’t know. As I note, I didn’t click on it for reasons noted. If the tease was purposely vague, that is their style. The last time I saw a N&O print edition it was like three paper towels glued together. So thin you could see thru it. A good-sized high school paper was bigger than that.
      .
When The N&O went “behind a PayWall” i.e.charging a monthly fee for accessing their digital edition, the charge was $9/mo or $98/year. That was 10-12 years ago. At that time I was A Star of their Reader Comments section (DUH!) along with a cantankerous old race-baiting galoot named BELO. BELO and I would “slug it out” once/twice a day to amuse the little people. No way was I going to pay a nickel to get on their site much less $9/mo. I announced my intent to adios on-line. A senior N&O exec contacted me to “offer me a deal” to stay on and stir up their comment board. I declined his offer… and have never been back. I think BELO still haunts the place though.

I do note that in the comments. A digital subscription has been $98/year. $20 is a drastic reduction presumably due to little/no market interest. The “please support us…” is the “beg” from a previously haughty monopoly that has fallen on very hard times… and getting harder,

Another Sneaky McClatchy Trick: If you EVER get in their date base for eitherThe N&O or Charlotte Observer you CANNOT get out of it. You can hit the “unsubscribe me” . “remove me” link umpteen times. They will NOT remove you.
    .
The reason, is, of course, they determine on-line ad rates by the number of eyes that supposedly see the site / the ads. That the # they use is purposely inflated is unlikely to ever be audited.
    .
About ten years ago I registered on-line for the CharlObser in order to “comment”. I think I did once/twice and quickly lost interest. I’m still in their database and get spam crap from them several times a month. Numerous efforts to get out their database have failed. … just an FYI.

Having lived in Raleigh for the first half century of my living experience – and having delivered the N&O on foot during the ’50s – and having attended Josephus’ funeral as a young child – I can say without fear or favor that the demise has been too long coming. I predict that they will be giving the newspaper away in a few short months. I moved to the Houston, TX, area about a quarter century ago where I witnessed the final death throes of the Houston Post. The Nuisance & Disturber is about to follow suit.

Don’t you think it strange that the Daniels families got out with their hundreds of millions when they did? Too bad. It would be a miracle to see any one of them actually work for a living.

The collapse of the American Newspaper Industry was a confluence of decades of exaggerated arrogance by “Newspaper Families” like the Daniels across the country… and the information technology revolution that NO ONE saw coming.
      .
Many of those Family Dynasties phased out in the 70-80s as 3rd-4th generations “wanted their mega-inheritances cashed out”. Even the corporations like McClatchy / Gannett et al never thought America would forgo “a daily newspaper with their morning coffee” …. SURPRISE!
      .
Once there was an alternative for “classified ads” for automobiles, jobs, various services, real estate etc that cash cow died quickly with no replacement. The hard-line left-wing bent of so many Limo Liberal Newspaper Families definitely created a LOT of resentment with their readership. … “chicken coming home to roost…”
