Art ChanskyDISCLAIMER:  re: UNVERIFIED…. Unlike Bre’r Chansky, I have NOT “obtained an advance copy from “it’s creator (Bethel)…” and have no plans to spend SaidWhatMedia $$$ to purchase a ticket.  But if furnished a copy, I will review it myself.   That is NOT for any pre-conceived bias about the “long- awaited” documentary at all; but rather I only go to two movies a year and I haven’t seen Stars War yet.  Using up my “other 2016 movie” in mid-January would be too risky.

WHOA… as we speak, I HAVE JUST received a copy of The Trailer to UNVERIFIED…. it’s down at the bottom of this page.

    ###BB Director

It seems to me, based on Artie’s comments below and earlier interviews with Cecil B. d’Bethel a/k/a “the creator”; his ax to grind appears to be with The University” for using Athletics as the scapegoat for Academia’s plethora of prolonged evil-doings.

Bethel’s tutoring buddies were hung out to dry i.e. fired; while others higher up the Academic bureaucracy were allowed to waltz away with their fat pensions unaffected.   Hard to argue with those facts.  I totally agree THAT was a travesty.

N&O Exec Editor John Drescher calls out Bethel re: who declined to talk to who ????  My tendency is to believe John Drescher.

“Clueless” Dickie, “Most Ethical” Jan Boxill, Deb Crowder and Uncle Julius were all “in it” up to their chiney chin chins but are now well-pensioned for life.  Score one point for creator/ director Bethel.

Chancellor Chihuahua Folt and Tom “Z Smith” Ross refused to be interviewed for the film.  That, as we all know from watching countless mobster movies, is the equivalent of “taking the 5th”.

For naive defenders of Tom Ross – NEVER FORGET this Franklin Street Martyr wanted to hire Dickie to be the Athletics Czar of The UNC System.   NEVER FORGET THAT when measuring Tom Ross’ “good sense”.

Bonnie and ClydeI’m sure Bethel takes the usual shots at (1) The Rabid ABC Lynch Mob for sure, at (2) That Damn Dan Kane and at (3) Mary & Jay (“Bonnie & Clyde”) because doing that is sure to get Pavlovian giggles, hoots and snorts from his 99.6% Carolina Way Drunk-as-Skunks audience of drooling IC board monkeys…. and octogenarian Choo Choo-ites.

Not unlike when a Lynch Mobbie tweets UNCheats and Swahili in 40 tweets/day. …. giggle, hoot, snort.

If/When The Vaunted Carolina Way Myth is ever formally – officially – legally Debunked; a lot of those shallow souls got nuthin’ left.   Conversely, not being able to Hate All Things UNC 24/7 would have a similar effect on a lot of ABCers.

FWIW…. Artie was against Wainstein before he ever set foot on campus.  Knowing that once he (Wainstein) kicked over the first rock what would crawl out could potentially tarnish the pristine sacred legacy of Carolina’s Voldemort – “He whose name (and Dome) shall not be mentioned”.

Coming up on the 6th Anniversary of Marvin Hits Send; This Great Unpleasantness has long-ago deteriorated into partisan feces flinging…. and giggles & snorts.

Assuming there ever IS an NCAA Verdict it will only generate several more decades of Holocaust Denying and Death Penalty Demanding.

…. as Dickie, Jan, Deb and Julius keep cashing those big fat pension checks.  … cha ching, cha ching!  Hark That Sound.

    Chansky’s Notebook: Unverified Riveting

    By Art (“BobLee’s Buddy”) Chansky

Unverified both answers and raises important questions.

The much-awaited documentary on the UNC academic scandal premiers at the Varsity Theater Friday night in a private showing. Chapelboro obtained an advance copy from creator and former UNC athletic tutor Bradley Bradley BethelBethel, and for anyone who loves this university, it is a riveting 90-minute watch that is a must-see.

Bradley Bethel’s film ‘Unverified’ is set to premiere on Jan. 8.

It deals primarily with the many nuances (fancy Chapel Hill word) of the complicated, four-year ordeal.  Nuances (repeat fancy Chapel Hill word) that Bethel says were largely ignored by the media chasing a sexy, juicy story and did not want to be deterred by the details. Those details, according to Bethel’s own narrative, were also covered up by the university in trying to place the blame on athletics and, in the process, fired scapegoated athletic tutors Beth Bridger and Jaimie Lee, who were Bethel’s colleagues.

The turning point of the documentary is when Journalism professor Adam Hochberg challenges Bethel’s assertion that Bridger and Lee were fired by the slanted media coverage and information in the infamous Wainstein Report. Bethel could have cut that interview since Hochberg seemed to have checkmated his theory. But, actually, it gave Bethel the impetus to go back, dig deeper and report that Bridger and Lee were fired without due process, purely on implication by Wainstein, who made more than $3 million from UNC for his work.

Bethel’s crusade to vindicate his colleagues sometimes overshadows the main accusation of the movie – that the Wainstein Report was commissioned and carefully written to shift responsibility away from the university, as whole, and back on the athletic department. And his charge is aided by Chancellor Carol Folt’s refusal to grant Bethel an interview and former UNC President Tom Ross never responding to his request.

The chancellor, athletic director and football coach at the time all departed, but more because they were the men in charge than proven complicit in any wrong-doing. Since then, the athletic department has skillfully contested the resulting NCAA Notice of Allegations to the point where the biggest penalty could still go to the university for lack of institutional control.

Though Bethel’s work would not have helped lead to that conclusion, it would further support Unverified as having the story more right than wrong. Go see it for yourself.

    ###

NOTE: I’m pretty sure Art’s go see it for yourself suggestion is nuancily directed at his core Chapelboro audience of hard-core TruBlues, not the far more DIVERSE audience that visits here.   BL

After watching the trailer and reading these accompanying articles, I think the existing readers’ comments sort of validate my main “take-away”….haven’t we already established there’s blame to spread around to just about everybody involved at Carolina? None of what I’ve read or seen in the trailer is a revelation. I, as a Carolina alum, never blamed the tutors. They were small role players in this from the get-go. I blame the poor oversight and low integrity in the AFAM dept, academic beaurocrats, and athletic dept staff charged with academic oversight for “student”-athletes (LOL @ that overused term) for not questioning how some of the low-iQ students easily made A’s. So while I regret that at first Billingsley was the scapegoat, we long since learned she was the tiny tip of the huge iceberg.

There has never been any question in my mind (also a UNC alum) that this was an “eligibility scheme” designed originally for MBB and later expanded to FB and “as needed”. That the AD and other mid-level staffers were aware and complicit over many years can only be attributed to their in-bred arrogance that “if Carolina does it, it HAS to be OK because ….”. Yes, Bethel’s co-workers WERE sacrificed to save the reputations and pensions of the admins and that is deplorable. I don’t know what, if anything, can be done legally to rectify that. Jerking some fat pensions would be “nice” but will never happen.

What are the odds that “Albert” has a clue who Lord Voldemort is?

About half as good as the odds that NC State’s Hindenburg Hangar will be named The Todd Turner IPF. “Albert’s” knowledge of Harry Potter characters needs work… BUT he knows EVERY Corinthian, Thessalonian and Galathian. In the End that might prove more valuable. 🙂

Dean wrote Boxill a termination letter, which I believe she made noises about appealing. Did she nor end up being terminated?

It’s kind of hard to buy that the University tried to put the blame on athletics when pretty much NONE the axes fell on athletic department people, other than…

ASPSA, which was at least a joint venture between academics and athletics.

I haven’t seen the film and would like to. From what I hear he interviews Bridger and Lee and doesn’t press them about the infamous slide and emails. WTF?

yes, it’s hard to believe only Crowder, Nyangoro, Bridger and Lee had full knowledge of how the thing worked and how it was exploited… but it’s pretty clear that all of these four did. It’s probably telling that no one, regardless of the axe they have to grind in this, seems to have pressed any of them very hard on who else did. I assume everyone’s too scared of the answers.

No, they allowed her (Boxill) to “retire” thereby keeping all her pension. All the “perps” got that privilege – Dickie, Boxill, Crowder and Nyang’oro.

I think I read somewhere that he raised over $100,000 to produce the “must-see” film. That $$$ could have added a lot of CHARGING STATIONS to the Kenan Football Center. 🙂

And you can bet Larry Fedora is well aware of exactly how many. If he loses ONE semi-lit to DD over charging stations, there will be hell to pay for somebody. 🙂

      • BobLee Reply

I have never seen a list or heard of anyone who “invested” in it. If I had to guess, I would say they come from a special faction of UNC Faux Fat Cats who are 3rd-4th generation “silverspoons i.e. trust fund babies” whose self-worth is tied up in The Carolina Way silliness. That false “superiority” means everything to them. Once that bubble burst… they got nuthin’ but a lifestyle someone else earned for them. … If $$$ can solve a problem they have plenty to throw at it.
        .
Again, that would be my guess.

Don’t you think the dome’s namesake is more responsible for Dickie being AD than anyone else? I heard he hand picked dickie to be his “boss,” and he sure picked Gut to be his replacement. how did both of those work out for us?

      • BobLee Reply

Absolutely. But I never faulted DES for doing that. He wanted to be sure he had 100% control over his Farewell Tour and Succession Plan. Having a dutiful sycophant like Dickie as AD assured him of that. Anyone else could have had other ideas. Seeing that Gut was amply rewarded for his loyalty was very important. Even THAT was OK IF Roy had come back “the first time”. When Dickie botched that, the wheels started coming off real fast. …. Dickie could have been replaced numerous times over 15 years but never was. Many share the blame for that.

Why are people attracted to Scientology and Radical Liberalism? Because the leaders of those two cults (1) tell them what they want to hear and (2) expect nothing from them except blind devotion. And (3) convince them boogie-men are out to get them. The people you need to be very leery of are the gullible goobers that financed the “riveting” documentary. Do NOT ask “them” to babysit your children.

Great! For all the $$$$ UNC has paid out in “legal fees” (and PR fees) the past five years they could put a dome over Kenan and not need an IPF at all. I’m not sure “because Bradley Bethel says so” is “solid legal grounds” for a lawsuit. 🙂

He seems to have a real “beef” with The University, not so much the media or rival fans. His long-awaited documentary does nothing to lessen the fact that a crime WAS committed, just who the real “perps” were.
